Nadya headed out of the city, away from the tavren, and out into the forest. She ran for a bit, then just started to walk for a bit. He couldn't have known...could he? Vampires are all forgotten...that's why I... do what I do... she thought. Nadya found herself a large tree with large enough hole in the trunk for her to crawl into and hide for when the day came bring the sun with it. She curled back in the back of the trunk, laying down on the ground.
Turan had followed the little girl quietly and from a distance, her thoughts playing through his mind. He knelt down at the foot of the tree "I know little one because your thoughts are as open to me as a book and you do not know how to shroud your weary mind" he said softly "You have nothing to fear from me, i promise you" a sense of unease hit him as his thoughts turned suddenly to Roan Now there's a basket case i got myself into he thought grimly.
"I..." she started, staring out at him. "I have everything to fear...." she whispered.
"Dear one, i was alive probably before even your parents where born, and no you have nothing to fear from me, but what is it that you fear? I know you cannot go out into light...is that it? Or perhaps the hunters, if so then i can tell you that any who would remember you are dead" his voice had a hint of sorrow in it.
"I lost all my family to hunters... I.... wasn't... just some child... or...I was... am a noble...." she whispered. "I... wasn't made.... I was...."
"You're a survivor of those damned so called whitch hunts carried out all those years ago? you poor thing....so you to lost your family to those who you thought you could trust...not that humans are ever trustworthy. As far as i'm concerned they only care about prolonging their inevitably short life spans" Turan had little love of humans, in part because it was a human who had turned or been one of the reasons for Ketsuri turning and yet i find myself the guardian of a human girl who might as well be an infant thrown to wolves he thought to himself
"You know of that...?" she asked, moving closer to the enterance.
"My dear, i am over seven hundred years old....my age exactly is unknown to me though...i just count the years from when i awoke, that being said there is little i am not aware of, but of this event i was particularly invovled. Infact i was also hunted on account that i would not support the kings endeavour" His voice held no lie or even a hint of deception.
"I don't look like this...." she said softly looking down. "I.... am able to manipulate my age.... I can slow it down.... speed it up.... freeze it.... my.... mother loved having me as her litle girl....."
"And you out of your love for her obliged her wishes" Turan nearly whispered "I figured that this was not your real form, but i did not know as to how or why"
"I don't know... how... or why.... I have this ability..." she whispered. "My... My brother...." she started, whispering softer. "He love me like this too... he didn't want anyone... any guys...you know...."
"Yes i know" Turan said stiffling a laugh at a memory that came to him, he recognized it as his own but he didn't remember where and when or any of the fair folk in it. Such flash backs where common but troubling ever since that day...
"What... are you going to do now....?" she said softly. "I... you must have more important things to do the rest of this night than... talk to... me?"
"If by that you mean badger the little girl that i saved from being decapitated? No, she doesn't like my being around and she's quite pissed at me so i'll leave her for awhile. If she needs anything then i have two friends that i trust who can more than take care of her" his tone had a bit of resentment and even bitterness in it. He had waited the better half of a century for this, and prepared for it. He sat down at the entrance to the hole she was in. Looking down both ways of the road.
"YOu're upset...." she whispered.
"Just wondering why i try when i'm not wanted. I tried answering her questions and helping her, but not only does she resent that i can read her thoughts she wants nothing to do with me so like i said before...i'll leave her to my friends for now. She seems to have taken a likeing to them" his tone was quiet. A hawk alighted on his wrist bereing a message which Turan placed upon a rock in front of him, unopened. The hawk didn't seem to appreciate it and proceeded to dance on and around the unopened letter.
Nadya reached out to the hawk. "I'm always unwanted..."
"Then you have yet to look in the right place" he said softly, calling the hawk over so she could touch it. The hawk eyed him as if to say read the damn letter i was rousted for delivering to your sorry ass in the middle of the night Turan picked up the letter and opened it, not reading it though as he whached Nadya and the bird.
"My family had wanted me... but their gone.... and... I can't look... I'm stuck in the night..."
"Like i said you know not then where to look. Even though you are stuck in the night you are not alone" he said opening the letter Roan needs you Turan, come back as soon as you get this letter it read. Turan sighed as the hawk looked at him expectanly for a reply letter.
"You have to go...." she said softly.
"At the moment only if you will accompany me back to the inn" he said with a smile "It will be some time before sunrise and the rooms are proof against the rays of daylight"
She nodded, crawling out of the tree. "Thank you...I...want you..." she whispered the last part.
"Your welcome, well come on we haven't got all night little one" he said with a light laugh as he extended a hand to her. His heart was troubled though by the letter. Julius and Abarhi where more than capable of deeling with one adolescent human...or so he thought.
Nadya took his hand. "Let's go...."
He glanced around why do i feel like somthing is following me? he wondered to himself "If it was refuge you sought then this most likely wouldn't be the place. The elves would welcome you with open arms, however they have removed themselves to the deep recesses of this wood"
"Can I stay with you...?" she whispered.
Turan was surprised "Of course you can, just be forwarned that i move around alot" his tone was light, though it belied his concerns for Roan.
"I've traveled some..."
Turan felt somthing creep up on his mind, like a shadow "Well i'm looking sooner or later for a place to settle down, till then i wander the world. I was wondering, what do you prefer for a place of living? Mansion with alot of land or city apartment? I ask because i can't quite chose between the two"
"I... my family use to live in a mansion...with lots of land.... and horses... I am a... was a noble...."
"And you still are. Very well a manor house it is then" he did not tell her that it was his old home that he had left for nearly three centuries. Ever since the day of Ketsuri's turning he hadnt been back.
She hugged him. "Thank you.... you are a good person..."
He swept her off her feet and set her atop his shoulder "No, just a lone soul trying to right the wrongs of his forgotten past" the path through the woods was well lit by the moonlight, the hawk was no where to be found so Turan assumed it had flown back.
"We're both lone souls..." she said softly, holding on carefully.
"One such as yourself should not be alone, and i must say i'm surprised you have managed to live so long unharmed for one that appears so young" he looked up at her "Are you comfortable or would you rather walk?" he asked softly sensing her mild unease.
"I'm fine up here...and I was looking for my brother.... I burried my whole family...but for my brother.... who had hid me from the attack..." she said. "And... being looking young... I can... trick to feed...." she whispered.
"Maybe one day you will find him" he smiled "Well that must help, a bit of a survivalist are we then?"
"I gave up on finding my brother....and yes all vampires are.... made vampires don't know what true vampires are truly about...."
"And what is the difference between a made vampire and a true vampire?" he asked, looking around as he thought he heard the bird your just being paranoid, knock it off turan before you scare the poor girl he chided himself inwardly.
"I can age... true vampires are born vampires.... made vampires can't age...but I'm rare because of my ability to freeze my age, deage or speed up my age....."
"Fasinating" Turan looked at her "And yet you have done this so many times your true age is lost to you? That must be mildly irritating"
"My brother... he started to age slowly I remember... we age more slowly at a certain age.... so..." she said softly. She then nodded. "Yes, my true age is lost...."
"I would say i can sympathize but my curse is greater....i cannot age and therefore time will never claim me through prolonged years"
"I'm sorry...it sounds like a made vampire's curse to me..." she said.
"Except i do not age at all outwardly, i only grow weary of it inwardly. Somtimes it shows, others it doesn't, but always...always the years weigh heavy" his voice took on a distant tone.
"Made vampires never age... they age they are when they are made into a vampire they stay....and.... I'm sorry..." she said softly, hugging his head.
"I find it strange that Humans crave immortality.....they do not understand what a burden it is" he reached up an wrapped an arm around her "No need to be sorry, there is a reason to everything. Even that which is miserable there is a reason for"
Nadya nodded. "Where we heading?"
"Back to the inn to see what's up there and then i suppose wait and see what Chorus and his fiends have in store"
"Who?" she asked.
"Chorus, the one responsible for this current briewing strife that may eventually leed to an all out war" Turan's voice took on a darker note "He is the reason the girl is hear, not that i don't mind her being here...i just don't at all agree with what he is doing"
"I don't like this..." she said softly. "Chorus sounds...scary..."
"How honest the mind of a child" Turan said with a laugh "Yes, and i would see him pay for all that he has done to this fragile realm"
"My mind is not that of a child's, you know... I'm just saying what I feel..." she giggled.
Turan laughed "Well, you look and act like a child...might as well be one" he teased.
Nadya giggled. "Don't make me shift ages on your shoulders..." she said, gently patting him on his head.
"You think it would matter? Even fully matured i doubt you'd way more than a hundred pounds" he said laughing again.
Nadya giggled. "I wouldn't be that much even...."
"That wouldn't surprise me" he paused. Abarhi had activated a warning beacon, a psychic one that the two of them had developed to alert the other to danger.
"Sir...?" Nadya said, leaning down to look at him.
"It would seem Chorus' minions found Roan" he said breaking into a run.
She holds on.
Nadya guided her's and Abarahi's horses onward towards Turan's mansion.
Abarhi looked dazed as he startled himself from a nightmare "W-where am i?" he asked warily.
"The Froth Forest...we're nearing the island...and the mansion...." Nadya said softly. "You had fallen asleep..."
Abarhi roused himself, ignoring the pain and keeping well in check any signs of pain.
"You looked so peaceful for a while there..." she said softly. "Nightmare?"
"Yes" he said softly
"I have them too...." Nadya said softly. "Well...daymare.... but there the same thing....it's always of darkness....the screams..... then the blood....my family's blood and the blood of allies...."
"I awoke to the screams and burning of my family's compound by a rival clan...i was perhaps 13 years old then? I was so paralized by fear Turan said i didn't speak for nearly a year" he said softly.
"I'm so sorry....at least you had Turan watching over you...."
"If you call somone saving you only to train you as an assasin. He taught me for thirty years before sending me to a cult like compound to further my training...." he cut himself off.
"I..." Nadya looked down. "I... you at least had someone.....instead of being alone...."
He bit back a bitter remark about what it was like in the assasin cult "True love" He surpressed the memory of his escape. That was one chapter he did not want to think about.
"Abarahi? Did you....want to be an assasin?"
"No, it became though somthing driven by revenge, and out of fear i remained....because if i did they would have killed me....not that i need to fear that now" he said quietly "Eventually i just accepted it as a part of me and used it as a means to further my own inborn abilities"
"Oh...I've only thought about survival.... but... before...I hadn't even really thought about what I'd want to do if I could choose.... my mother wanted me to be her little baby girl...and father wanted me to marry a man that he saw fit for me...I choose to be mama's little girl to keep from being forced into a marriage....I know my father loved me... but he also had to look to the future of our family's name and power....." she whispered.
"For what it matters; i'm glad you chose to please your mother instead of your father" he jerked his horses head away from getting his nose stuck in a grass patch.
"I am glad too..." Nadya said with a smile to him. "My father continued to bring in men he thought would be a good fit for me....but I refused every time.... which made my mom happy....and.... my brother happy too... he would.... glare at a few of the men that ended up seeing me older....scaring them off.... I wouldn't let him do that to you...when we find him...."
He laughed "Love....after what i have seen and done; i doubt he could scare me" he adjusted his arm sling "That must have been frustrating...i'm sorry you had to be put through that
"I wasn't able to fully do all of my studies.... which had included weapons, defense, and magic training.... because mom wanted me with her or learning things that she had been taught.... healing and horse riding being the only ones I thought important..." Nadya looked at him with love and determination. "That's another reason why I wish for you to train me in some of the practices you were trained in...."
He nodded "That i can do, but i can't build up your pain tolerance to mine...that's somthing i won't put you through no matter how cute your eyes get" he laughed softly "But yes i will train you to defend yourself...though i must apologize it is purely selfish....cause like i said...i may not always be here"
"It's not selfish...." Nadya said softly. "Not to me....and..." she said, smiling. "You haven't seen just how cute I can be.... I've have decades of practice....I didn't just feed off bandits when my hunger came up... I've used cuteness to be able to, for the lack of a nicer term, 'worm' my way into a home of someone that.... hurt children...." She whispered the last part.
He shook his head "Like i said, i'm not about to expose you to the darker side of me intentionally" He nodded "I once was put up to the task of infiltrating a local govenors' mansion...Some mortals have dark desires...needless to say there is not even a trace left of the palace or the city" his voice sank low "The entire clan declared war after one of the warlords daughters was found chained to a basement....i left the clan soon after...and that began probably the darkest war in my life" he said at near whisper.
Nadya leaned over to him, kissing hin softly on the cheek. "You don't have to train me at all in the darker side of what you had gone through in your training... I will be happy with any training you are ....just some techniques to survive to see another day...or actually, another night...." She kissed him. "I love you.... and I hope that I brighten up you day or night as it is..."
"Nadya i have not seen a brighter night before i met you" he said quietly. He saw the low hills that hid the entrance to the island "Dawn is approaching" he noted, seeing night turn lighter shades of black "I love you Nadya, and i will teach you" maybe some day you won't have to worry about living just one more night he thought to himself.
"I love you too Abarahi...." Nadya smiled. "I feel more...." she giggled softly, "...alive since I've met you.... now, do you thing we'll be able to get to the island and the mansion before the sun fully rises or... should I just quickly do what I did when I was traveling with Turan and Roan there.."
"What do you mean by that?" he felt light hearted inspite of the resurgent pain "Whatever it is that you did with Turan and Roan....sunrise will happen within an hour and we are at least an hour and a half from the Mansion"
Nadya smiled softly and lovingly at him. "You will see...but you need to hold back your horse and take the reigns of mine too...." she said softly. "When I'm done, you have to hide me inside your pack making sure it is completely covered...."
"The reason why this case is so heavy is because it is a wooden box overlaid with leather....i think you'll be fine love" As if on impulse both horses slowed to a steady gate, a slight trickle of blood came from his ear "I can't even do that without consequence...oh well...only temporal" he said lightly.
"Really? Your cage is like that....really?" she asked astonished.
"Not every job handed down to an Assasin love involves killing....kidnapings, and smuggling are just as comon as murders or ordered genocides" he laughed alittle "The case is made to house somthing and make sure no sound can get in or out....though i removed the psychic barrier inside it...so in short...yes it's a very elaborate cage and no sunlight will get in"
Nadya nodded, and smiled. "Ready?" Before he had a time to react, Nadya was shifting, ending up being a small black kitten on the back of her horse.
He placed her gently in the box, folding up her cloths and setting them next to her well i guess i am now he laughed.
Nadya meowed. Aren't I cute? she thought to him, looking up at him with her cute kitten face.
He roled his eyes you trying to set me up to convince me of somthing? he noted that even this put some strain on his weary mind, but not enough for it to register as a problem.
Trying to set you up to convince you of something? I...I didn't think I needed to convince you of anything....
"Oh really? What was that you said not to long ago about me might being surprised at how convincing you could be?" he laughed, the horses where in a full run by now, which he had them in to cut the time in half.
I....can't really help myself right now...I have been playing the role of a child for a long time...
He smiled an shook his head "As a child though you are at your most vulnerable correct? Though i suppose you are also at your most lethal"
Nadya giggled in his mind. Who would except a little girl.....
"After i nearly had my throat clawed out by a posessed one...i would, but not many have expirianced that so i doubt anyone would"
You were? I...I'm sorry....
She was young...perhaps 7 or 8 years old? A cult had gotten a hold of her...after what they did to her and the deamonic ritual...death must have been welcome to her...she wanted me to help her...but the Deamon took over he dipped his head forward alittle.
Oh....I'm sorry.....
"Don't worry about it Nadya, that is but the very fringes of what i live in" his voice was soft, almost a whisper.
I love you....all of you.....
"I have shed more blood probably than you have drank...most of it for revenge and if not that...then money" he said softly i love you Nadya he chided himself for being so self detrimental, but he found it hard to see himself as anything other than black hearted for being the end of so many lives.
Nadya was quiet within his mind for a few minutes that just seemed to slow. I...killed innocence.... her mind's voice barely a whisper.
to survive love, there is a differance he corrected gently you aren't as bad as you think Nadya, like i said my love you killed to live...you needed it. I didn't, infact i never started killing in self defence till recently when some of the clan remnants caught up with me.... he didn't want to tell her about the brutal war that had ensued in the back woodlands. For now the elves had kept all but the absolute best at bay, thus he only had to fight rarely.
I....thank you for saying that....about me... love, you are different too, from your past....that's what matters....as I said...I love all of you....past and present.... as I'm sure you love me the same....
You're welcome Nadya, and I do, probably more than you know
He felt love wash through his mind from Nadya, as the island came into view as well as the sunrise.
Abarhi smiled, leading the horses to the Island bridge. It was a heavily forested over earthen causway that had been fortified by the Elves over time. The weathered and worn, white battlements adorned with the signs of ageing. A lone figure stood at the top of an earthen mound outside the gate. Abarhi gave a start "It's been awhile" he said slowly i thought you where dead he snarled mentally "Oh Abarhi yes it has been awhile, but i didn't come to give formalities....no you passed that up many years ago. This is the warning; The clan never sleeps" with that he dissapeared, leaving a some what rattled Abarhi.
Abarahi....what's wrong? What's happening?
My past catching up with me Abarhi said grimly as they reached the gates. He contemplated distancing himself from her till he knew what the remaining members where up to, but he didn't wish to punish her for his past mistakes what a dark sin...and yet i still pay for it even after so many centuries he thought to himself.
I'm here when you wish to talk, love.... ((we can go to the island))
Kealia raced with her little bundle. She ran across a cave, smelling the scent of a clan of vampires. She hit her bundle a few times against a tree, then hide her bundle as she dealt with the vampire clan. In the end, she had killed all the vampires but for a young girl who she knocked out. Kealia went and brought her bundle into the cave, then switched the vampire girls, wrapping Nadya up in another cloak. Kealia laid the other vampire in the middle of the main road for Conrad to deal with, leaving him a simple note to just take the cloak off for a second, and leave the cloak with the ashes. Kealia then raced off again to the Roc Kingdom to wait for Conrad with their new little play thing.
Conrad found the Vampire in the road. Making sure it wasn’t Nadya he pulled her frightened from the sack “I’m sorry dear…..you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time” he killed her painlessly before mutilating the body. Making it seem like all manner of things had happened to her. He left in search for Kaelia.
Gurthar found the body. He was saddened, the sight of what he knew would have once been a fair maiden now so horribly marred. He hadn’t told anyone that the one he had once loved had been a Vampire slain by Vampires. He had only gone after Abarhi because it was a member of Abarhi’s now destroyed company that had set the Vamps after him. He followed after Conrad.
