there's actually a wide variation of ghosts in the world. Nearly every culture shows a distinction between "residual manifestations" that are just the same event being repeated over and over again for centuries at a time or a specific emotion--such as grief, anger, or fear--being prevalent in a place even to people who have no clue what happened there, and "comprehensive manifestations" that are supposed to be actual spirits or souls or whatever you want to call them that have been unable to pass on. And then there are different cultural flavors, such as poltergiests, which are traditionally german ghosts that tend to move things around and make loud noises to let people know they're there, obakis (I think that's how you spell it :/) which are basically the japanese versions of poltergeists, only considerably quieter and occasionally more helpful, banshees--or female spirits native to ireland that commonly haunt specific families and who's screams are supposed to indicate a death in the family (there's even legends of banshees screaming for the death of relatives on the other side of entire continents or oceans to alert the other family members)--and in china the ghost of a murder victim would supposedly have no chin. Of course, that china one came from a book that I read /way/ back in elementry school and the same book said that there were also old legends that the corpse of a werewolf must be cremated or the werewolf will rise again as a vampire. Plus, banshees probably fall more under the category of "deathly spirits" more than actual ghosts in that there is usually no indication that they were ever alive to begin with and therefore could not be "dead", much like dullahans, will-o-wisps, the washer-woman, and multiple other "ghosts" found around the world that seem to have a purpose in predicting/causing the deaths of others.
