Aftermath and newcomers

A black cairrage led by four black hoarses kicked up quite a bit of dirt. Two men stepped out of the cairrage, both dressed in similar black suits.

Ace walked up mainstreet with her brother Jeremiah at her side. "Let's go give Earl a visit," She suggested, passing the black cairrage.

"Sure, s'long 's I don' have t' drink anythin'," Jeremiah smiled and picked up his pace, and heading into the saloon.

"You'll hold yer liqour soon enough," she joked, entering the saloon.

Ace walked out of the saloon, an air of frustration about her.

"Exscuse me miss?" One of the men asked Ace as she walked by, there was a hint of arrogance in his voice.

Ace waved him off as she continued walking away.

"Rude, aren't they?" The other, older, man asked. "We're kings amongst unruly peaseants," he murmered.

Karl heard it as he came out of the saloon. "Not to me," he said gruffly to them, flashing them his badge before running to catch up to Ace. "Ace!" he called out.

"Hmph," The arogant man sniffed, waving to his cairrage driver to take the horses to the stables.

Ace turned around spying Karl and stopped walking, though she wanted to keep going. "Yea?" she called back, after clearing her throat. "Everything alright?"

Karl came up to her and stopped a few paces away from her. "I was just... wanting to say thank you for taking care of me over the past few weeks. If it wasn't for your kind hospitality I'd probably be stuck in the jailhouse with an infected wound. So, thank you. I mightily appreciate it."

Ace gave a small smile," well I'm not one who takes kindly to worryin', told ya that the night that girl brought ya in, out cold. I would've gone crazy, probrably knockin' on th' jailhouse door at all hours."

"Why?" Karl asked, his head cocked to one side.

Ace shrugged and watched a few walking about," 'cause I know I can do somethin' t' help ya. I'm not sure how you'd take care of yerself, or if ye could've in yer condition. And I... kinda felt like I needed to."

Karl nodded. "I have to admit that if our situations were switched I'd do the same... because I care about you. You've been a good friend to me, always being there when I needed a hand or an extra gun. I'm not sure how I'd cope without you."

"Thank you Karl. You're one of th' few people who've said such things, one of the few that don't care wether I wear a dress er not," Ace smiled, looking down to her feet. "I'd 'av said somethin nicer. I jus have a problem findin' words."

Karl swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. "Then can your actions say what words can't?" he asked hoarsely.

Ace cleared her throat, glancing up," you should know better than anyone. But sometimes I feel like I can't speak, in a way."

Karl pulled at the collar of his shirt, feeling far too warm. "Let my actions say what my voice has no courage to," he said quietly before leaning his head down and kissing Ace on the lips tenderly.

Ace leant into Karl as she kissed him back. A few seconds later she pulled away," Karl... I don't know if this'll work."

Karl looked into Ace's eyes. "Is there any harm in trying?"

"No," Ace started. "But I've never had an oportunity to. This is all new t' me Karl."

Karl blushed slightly. "You'd know as well as anybody else around here that neither have I. Not many women see the sherriff as a catch."

"Not many men see a tomboy as the woman she really is," Ace replied. "So I guess we're even."

Karl nodded and looked around, thinking of something to say. "So... god, I've never been any good at things like this! Err... you wanna do anything together?"

"Well what would we do Karl? Dead Dog Creek isn't known for the exciting lifestyles it's citizen's lead," Ace joked. "But if you can some up with something."

Karl blushed. "Nothing I'd like to try with you so early on in our relationship! Well, I suppose we could go play cards with some others."

"Nothing like that," Ace laughed, noting that she should choose her words better. " But I do think it's time for Jeremy t' learn howta gamble."

Karl hadn't noticed Ace's slip and smiled. "Yeah, and who better to teach him than his older sister?"

"Probrably pa, but he's done gamblin'. Shall we?" Ace asked motioning towards the saloon.

Karl nodded, following Ace.

"Pft, women gambling," the arrogant man scoffed. " Women only belong in two places where I come from, eh?" he laughed and raised an eyebrow to the older man.

"Only good for two things if you ask me," he chuckled and gave Ace a narrow eyed glare.

Ace returned one, fighting the urge to spit in the man's face. Her hand twitched nervously towards her gun, but wouldn't do much more unless their conversation involved her.

Karl moved Ace on hurriedly. "Ignore those assholes. They're so up themselves! Like a bunch of dogs sniffing each others' backsides!"

Ace didn't say a word but kept her eyes on the men as she trudged into the saloon.

The older man chuckled to himself. He switched his silver handled cane to his other hand as he siged. "I wouldn't waste my money on this dump Gerard," he muttered, ignoring Karl's comment.
