They make the pottery, mostly in terra cotta with rough ridges so that seed can be pressed into the surface and since the terra cotta is a good distributor of water, it makes it a good germination base. Some of the fancier ones I have seen have the seed in a sort of paste that contains a bit of food and growing medium so that they get really thick coats or hair masses.
