My mother once told me about back when we still lived in Savannah, GA that she and her friends were out for dinner and one mentioned that her son had 'started asking questions...' and everybody was in shock and understood how horrible and awkward this was. That's the only explanation as to why, for example, a movie that depicts nothing but people getting mutilated and butchered in the most gruesome and grisly ways can still score ONLY an R rating, but the moment you show one half-second of a nipple, the old men freak the fuck out and slap it with an NC-17.

And since going to the movies is so deeply rooted in social structure... if the old geezers were replaced by younger folks who aren't scared of the human body, and decided to rate movies properly, the effect would eventually trickle down through the ranks, and in a generation or two we might be at a point where the perception of "boobs=bad, murder=okay" would be reversed.
