He was educated at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His father is named Eirwyn, he's a primary school teacher. His mother is Beti, a nusery school teacher. At age 13, he changed his last name from Evans to Ifans, just to "be difficult and different". Rhys Ifans, a talented actor, started his career early. He joined a youth theatre with his younger brother, Llyr (also an accomplished actor). Later, he studied at the Guildhall School (Welsh is Rhys' first language) and then worked at the National Theatre for 18 months, before being cast in Twin Town with his brother. His big break came from Notting Hill, where he played Spike, Hugh Grant's filthy room mate. He lives in London, the Pimlico district, in a one bedroom apartment. His former girlfriend is Jess Morris.
