The Colddrake
Young Vanyel once awakened from, a dream of death and fear.
If he should choose to be a mage, his doom would then draw near,
Of future filled with suffering was all that he could see
And so he made a choice to leave k'Treva there then flee.
Into the winter's bitter cold he hurried on that day,
His mind was numbed and chilled and he could scarcely find his way.
When pondering his haste made choice he thought then to return,
But a magic cry for mercy made his frozen spirit burn.
Silver and amethyst the Colddrake hunts for prey,
Its glowing eyes can hypnotize and steal your soul away.
He caught the cry of magic then and followed it where is led,
And all the while a helpless anguish echoed in his head.
He came upon a holding in a sheltered forest vale,
Destroyed in ruthless fury by a monster cold and pale.
A woman and her children huddled near the Colddrake's paw.
Her husband lay in shreds beneath an unforgiving claw.
The beast entranced her victims neither looking left nor right,
She knew for well the peasants had no way to run or fight.
Silver and amethyst the Colddrake hunts for prey,
Its glowing eyes can hypnotize and steal your soul away.
Then suddenly a man stepped fourth, a pitch fork in his hand,
As if alone he'd face the beast, and bravely take a stand.
Though old and frail he could not bear to watch his kinfolk die,
He was the only chance they had, and he was bound to try.
The man thrust his weapon deep into the Coldrake’s side,
He knew his life was forfeit and there was no where to hide.
As Vanyel watched, the monster killed the farmer where he stood.
Distraction broke the calling as the old man knew it would.
Silver and amethyst the Colddrake hunts for prey,
Its glowing eyes can hypnotize and steal your soul away.
From hiding then did Vanyel spring, rage forcing his attack.
He shielded all the peasants and he forced the monster back.
With magic drawn from hidden nodes, he flung the Colddrake high
And watch it's broken body plummet from the winter sky.
Courage of the simple folk can move a man to tears,
Or give him strength to face a foe and conquer all his fears.
So Vanyel made a choice that day, he never would regret;
A farmer taught a lesson that the mage could not forget.
Silver and amethyst the Colddrake hunts for prey,
Its glowing eyes can hypnotize and steal your soul away.
Silver and cardinal lay on the snow that day,
For young Vanyel unfroze his spell and chose the mage's way.
The stars are very beautiful, above the palace walls,
They shine with equal splendour, still above far humbler halls.
I watch them from my window, but their bright entrancing glow,
Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago.
The royal circlet of bright gold rests lightly on my brow,
I once thought only of the rights this circlet would endow.
But once I took the crown to which I had been schooled and bred,
I found it heavy on the heart, though light upon the head.
Although I am the head of state, in truth I am the least,
The true Queen knows her people fed, before she sits to feast.
The good Queen knows her people safe, before she takes her rest,
Thinks twice and thrice and yet again, before she makes request.
For they are all my children, all, that I swore to defend,
It is my duty to become both Queen and trusted friend--
And of my children high and low, from beggar to above,
The dearest are my Heralds, who return my care with love.
The dearest are my Heralds, swift to spring to my command.
Who give me aid and fellowship, who always understand
That land and people first have needs that I may not deny--
So I must send my dearest friends to danger--and to die.
A friend, a love, a child--it matters not, I know indeed,
That I must sacrifice them all if there should be the need.
They know, and they forgive me--doing more than I require,
With willing minds and loving hearts go straight to grasp the fire.
These tears that burn my eyes are all the tears the Queen can't shed,
The tears I weep in silence as I mourn my Heralds dead.
Oh gods that dwell beyond the stars, if you can hear my cry--
And if you have compassion--le
Wolfen One music & lyrics: Heather Alexander
--------------
Wolfen one,
You are my midday moon and I, your midnight sun-
Wolfen one,
Our journey’s at an end but life has just begun-
When first we met, I thought
That what I felt could not be true-
But through the sharing of our hearts
There now is one where there was two-
Left to right,
the meeting of the darkened day and dawning night-
Drum to tune,
the joining of the shining sun and silver moon-
I knew the risk I took
when down beside you I had laid,
And lo, the breath of two new lives
was well worth the price I paid-
Wolfen one,
come dance with me and gaze back at which we have done-
Wolfen one,
we’ve sown the threads by which the future shall be spun-
Wolfen one,
You are my midday moon and I, your midnight sun-
Wolfen one-
Living is dancing and you are the dancer
Within you the answer, if only you dare...
-- Mercedes Lackey (lyrics to "Lute Lessons")
Hear the earth sing of her own loveliness...
She arises in you as you in her
Your voice becomes her voice
Sing!
Your dance is her dance
of the circling stars and the ever-renewing flame...
-- Starhawk
And you who seek to know me; know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.
--The Charge of the Goddess
Had I learned to fiddle, I should have done nothing else.
-- Samuel Johnson
To see a world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.
-- William Blake
I hate today. I am having a writer's block and I can't get my story/novel done.
