Input Devices.
Alan Ford will probably need quite a few input devices. These include a keyboard for the input of text. A standard QWERTY keyboard will suffice. A mouse will also be required, preferably 2 or 3 click with a scroll wheel to easily move through pages of text. Also a scanner or digital camera would be very useful, with a scanner you could upload pictures of products and other things onto your computer, whereas with a digital camera you could upload photo’s straight onto the computer without the slight distortion that a scanner may cause, but a digital camera would not make good quality copies of things already on paper that have already been drawn or printed out. He would not require a joystick as he would not really be using the computer for any games or things that require a joystick.
Output Devices
Alan Ford would only require couple of output devices, he will obviously require a VDU (Visual Display Unit) but he could either get a cathode ray tube monitor or a flat panel monitor. Both have advantages, the CRT monitor is big and bulky takes up a lot of space it also cuts off about a ¼ of an inch of the overall screen though it is a lot cheaper then a flat panel one. The advantages of the flat panel one is that it takes up less space and does not cut a bit of the screen off it is a lot more expensive though. He should go for a CRT one for its cheapness.
Processing Unit
In his processing unit Alan ford will need an Intel Pentium 4 processor with a 40 gigabyte hard drive to store all the spreadsheets and customer databases he will need. He will not really need a floppy drive but most computers come with one ready installed. Floppy disks can be useful for storing small files on but are not very compact or reliable and a better investment would be in a USB flash Drive which will store a lot more data and are a lot more compact and reliable. He will also need a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM to read CD’s and DVD’s, an all in one would be best because it will work out cheaper. He will also need a CD-RW/DVD-RW to write files to disk to make backup copies of all his spread sheets and other files in case his computer crashes and he loses his files. Try to get a CD-RW 24X 24X 40X which will meet his requirements. He will need a modem if he is going to access the internet and develop a website. He will need a fast connection like broadband because it is more reliable and would work out cheaper; a dial up would be slow.
Software
Alan Ford will need Microsoft Windows XP professional office version it will offer better virus control then home version and is more suited to work then the home version. Microsoft XP automatically comes with Microsoft Word (word processing), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet program), Microsoft Access (Database program), Microsoft Publisher (desktop publishing) and Microsoft Frontpage Express (website development tool). It also comes with a personal organiser which Alan needs and Microsoft Outlook an E-mail program.
