The Isla de Muerta was specifically chosen for the Race after a strict screening process, eliminating all unsatisfactory environments. Formerly known as the Big Island of Hawaii, it was abandoned after an unexpected return of volcanic activity. The other islands are still inhabited, providing a broadcasting base for the Race, but the Isla de Muerta is devoid of people, inhabited only when the Race is being held.
