Best Known as: Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Severus Snape in Harry Potter

This classically trained actor's hawklike facial features, ready sneer, and cultured voice have made him a natural in roles calling for suave villainy, notably the terrorist-bandit leader in Die Hard, the ruthless land baron in Quigley Down Under, and the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. But Rickman, a versatile performer, is capable of much more: He was personally amusing in the otherwise dull The January Man as a wacky sidekick to unconventional cop Kevin Kline, and charming in Truly, Madly, Deeply as a ghostly musician. He also had an amusing role in Tim Robbins' political satire Bob Roberts. The actor first gained acclaim (and a Tony nomination) on Broadway in a transplant of the British stage production "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." His most recent screen credits are Mesmer and An Awfully Big Adventure.
