The Lightsaber
A lightsaber emits a blade of pure energy at a certain length. The Hilt, or handle, contains 2 small crystals that is imbued with the force by a master jedi. Lightsabers only expend energy when actually cutting something. It is not possible for a lightsaber to run out of power. Some Force Adepts are capable of charging ordinary melee weapons with the Force, which enables the weapon to withstand a few lightsaber strikes even when made from simple wood or another substance normally vulnerable to a lightsaber's blade.
The first lightsabers were developed as siege weapons. These required a separate power pack, which was often worn on the back, and later, a belt worn power source. The power sources and components were eventually miniaturized to fit inside the hilt and create a simple weapon used in later eras.
When explaining the traditional Jedi preference for lightsabers (i.e. short-range mêlée weapons) over long-range blasters to Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi states that "This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or as random as a blaster, but an elegant weapon for a more civilized age" . Also, Mace Windu mentions in his personal log that the reason of the primary Jedi weapon being a mêlée one is to make the Jedi see the eyes of those whose lives he or she takes with it .
The blade is rounded with a pointed tip, and capable of instantly burning human flesh into a carbonized mass and melting high density alloys within seconds. The weapon is noted for instantly cauterizing wounds, thus eliminating bleeding after a lightsaber wound; however in some cases in the Expanded Universe, a limited amount of blood flow does occur. The blade does not radiate any heat and only loses energy when it cuts through something. Lightsabers work in the rain but let off steam when doing so, as seen by Obi-Wan Kenobi's use of his lightsaber in the rain on Kamino in Attack of the Clones.
The lightsaber is made up of a short polished metallic cylindrical tube that emits an energy beam that acts as a sword blade. All lightsabers contain some common basic components:
A handgrip
An activation stud plate, button, switch, or internal Force-activate
d mechanism
A safety or dead man's switch
An emitter matrix
A primary focusing crystal (which gives the blade its hue, Adegan/Ilum crystals are most commonly used)
Up to two secondary crystals which produce different effects
A lens assembly (focusing crystals)
A blade-length adjuster (only on dual-phase lightsabers with at least two crystals)
A miniature power cell (for the most part, unlimited in power; requires little recharging)
An energy gate
A power conduit
A recharge socket (recharges the power cell when the lightsaber is off)
Cycling field energizers
A belt clip (optional)
Colors
Blue, green, and yellow are the starting color for a jedi first crafting his/ her lightsaber. Red is used by most sith to represent passion and war.
These however are not set in stone and any jedi/ sith can use any color they desire. The color of a lightsaber blade depends on the crystals used to focus it.
The Lightsaber Colors
-Blue
-Green
-Yellow
-Red
-Orange
-Silver
-Viridian
-Purple
-Cyan
Prior to the Battle of Ruusan, Jedi used lightsabers in a vast array of colors. Afterwards, Jedi relied on more common Ilum crystals such as blue and green. During his Knight Trials, Mace Windu braved the rock-encrusted world of Hurikane on the orders of his Jedi Master to obtain his lightsaber crystal. He encountered the planet's natives and, in a moment of panic, accidentally threw them over a cliff. Realizing his mistake, the young Padawan saved the natives. It was from this mission that Mace Windu was given the rare crystals as a gift. Palpatine also ordered that all known crystal sources were destroyed, but by the time of the new Jedi Order many crystals had grown back and jedi could also rely on newer caves found throughout the galaxy.
In Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Luke Skywalker constructed his lightsaber using instructions hidden in Obi-Wan Kenobi's abandoned hut on Tatooine. Instead of using natural crystals however, he synthetically created the focusing gems within a compact molecular furnace, also found inside Kenobi's home. While the intense heat of the kiln molded the base materials that Luke had placed inside, he channeled his Force energies through them, which in turn shaped and modified their internal properties. With this process, a completely functional lightsaber crystal can be created. Darth Maul was known to have created his double-bladed lightsaber in much the same way, but with one major difference. During the forming of the crystals within the furnace, the Sith focused all of his blinding rage, aggression, and malice into the gems. This leads to the belief that it may be possible to mold the alignment of the completed crystal itself through this process.
Color Alignment
Some jedi take their devotion to their blade to the extreme, they seek rare colorless crystals and then go through the trial of coloring it. It Colors itself to the true personality of the Jedi (some Jedi do use Red Lightsabers, but they tend to go to the dark side soon after). Then You must create your Color crystal out of thin air, by using the force you must make it appear. Then Fuse the two crystals together. The chasis of the lightsaber must be built specialy to hold extra large crystals, and wired more prescisly then a normal lightsaber, most fail this task and the lightsaber either doesnt ignite, or it explodes and drains the jedi's force abilities and ulitimatly kill the jedi. Then you put your Soul into the lightsaber through 3 days of meditation while holding the saber. If you are good you will put your serenity in it, if evil, you will put your hatred into it. This makes the Lightsaber yours, and it will not work for anyone other than you, also the saber cannot leave your hands, it becomes a extension of your body, and it becomes apart of you. These sabers prove a Jedi, or sith, lightsaber Mastery. Luke Skywalker did something simmilar to this process when he made his green lightsaber.
Body Type
(a * means it was invented by [Nazarath.93] and a new style used in a new age)
-Standard Body: A long lightsaber is weilded by common Jedi, Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, Mace windu etc All use these, they are of ordinary blade length, and a straight body construction, with a grip and side button. The hilt is one to two handed (depending on which style you use)
-Short Body "Shoto": There are also variant lightsabers with shorter handles and blades (known as short lightsabers or lightdaggers) that can be wielded as offhand (weaker hand) secondary weapons. Or the primary lightsaber of a small Jedi like Yoda. These Blades are the shorter than a Standard body, but their hilt is only one handed, and if you have larger hands, your hand may touch the blade. Yoda Is barely able to two hand this.
-Double Bladed: As the name implies, this is a hilt with a blade at each end. These hilts are about 3 feet long, and have numerous knobs on them for changing the light potency (From a normal lightsaber, to a intangible light beam) These are used as light sources in dark places by turning off one blade and turning down the main blade to a bright beam of light.
-*Front Double Bladed: A lightsaber thanks to the Innovation of [Nazarath.93]. It has a normal standard body sized hilt, but two blades. The back side doesnt have the other blade though. The front if the saber has two blades coming out of it, they are both ignited at the same time rather than individually.
-*Tri Bladed: A Very rare kind of saber, this has a double bladed hilt, two blades coming out of the front and one out of the back. These are unbelievably difficult to craft, because wiring a lightsaber takes utmost concentration, and the wiring in this tri bladed blade can take up to years to focus the splitters in the blade, and wiring some 200 individual wires. This is made by some very masterful Padawans who usually die from lack of knowing how to use one. The making of a tri blade is almost as difficult as using it.
-*Cross: A Center Grip circle holding four crystals all wired out into 4 opposite facing hilts that are all about 2 feet long. With four buttons to ignite four blades, this is a truly fearsome weapon. It has four blades pointed in Opposite direction (+ <- the hilt looks like this). The exact art of crafting this will take many years to perfect, and is usually made at night while the jedi trains which usually leads to less sleep for a padawan. But using it requires training that only sith offer, it focuses on the art of spining your wrists in circular motions, and forming sheilds out of the four blades. Many high level users use this blade with the Lightsaber Throw technique to make devatating boomerang like throws. Another alternative to using this is using the force to levatate it inches from your hand and cause it to spin while in your offhand you use a short body lightsaber.
-Link Sabers: A link saber is based around a nunchaku like design, with two short body sabers connected by a chain or a fiber cord, the sabers each have a curved hilt and can be connected to form a double bladed saber, or the chain can be disconnected and each one could be used individually.
-Dual Phase: The unique form of a Standard body, with a very unique power. While its hilt remains normal size the blade itself can range from 6 inches, to 4 feet, and anywhere in between all with the rising and lowering of a side lever that is very easy to get used to using. Construction is simple, however difficult. Most first designs of a padawan's dual phase tends to keep to one length, and not change much.
-Y-saber: A Y saber has a Y shaped hilt and has one crystal split in two on each y. The points of the Y curve into each other causing the blade to have a small gap before leading into a 5 1/2 foot long blade. This weapon has a slightly longer hilt, but the longest blade of them all. Also called the Light claymore.
-Curve Saber: A normal standard body saber, but has a slight curve to it for easier wrist movement. Count Dooku/ Darth Tyrannus used this in Episode II and III
-Saber Staff: This weapon, very popular among sith weapon masters, consists of a regular sized blade atop a long metal staff that, when unignited, can be used as a walking stick. The hilt can be varied in length to match the users preference or height, it can be cane sized or a full length staff.
Lightsaber upgrades
Lightsabers may be upgraded in various ways, most are small personal preferences, while some offer great differences and can offer a superior edge in combat.
Call Beacon
This is a small beacon with a button on the outside of the saber that emits a radio transmission to ships. Useful if a jedi becomes stranded.
Cell Recognizer
This is a small pad installed on the on button of the saber that will record its masters DNA and the on button will only activate if the DNA matches. A security system can be installed as well, to emit a loud noise or even a numbing shock.
Concealed compartment
This is just a small compartment that blends in with the saber making it impossible to see. The Jedi or sith can hide small objects inside their saber with this.
Signiture Baffler
This is a small array inside the lightsaber that masks its energy signiture, so if a jedi wishes to conceal it or make it appear as a mundane object or even a prop this upgrade is ideal.
Double offclick
This modifies the on switch making it turn on with one press and off with two, thus eliminating the switch being hit on accident in combat.
Force activated switch
Some jedi opt to remove their on switch making the lightsaber only activatable telepathically, preventing non force users from using their saber.
Increased Illumination
This upgrade is a focusing lens near the front of the saber that increases the light put off by a saber.
Light Suppression
This upgrade is a darkened lens in the front of the hilt that dims the light of a saber greatly, making it difficult to see in the dark.
Hold switch
This puts a smaller switch beneath the on button that prevents the on button from moving unless this one is released.
Multi Tool
This places smaller tools inside the saber making it have a vast number of uses. Useful to certain jedi but not to combat.
Pressure Grip
This is one of the most common upgrades used, it makes the lightsaber turn off should it leave its masters hand.
Silencer
As the name implies this dampens the noise produced by a saber, making it ideal to assassins, however it does not silence the blade completly just lowering it down to a dull hum.
Underwater casing
By casing the wires and power conduit with a type of plastic and a special type of focusing lens (compatable with another lens to allow other upgrades) this makes a lightsaber, which usually shuts off underwater, stay ignited when swimming, the saber will give off steam while under the water but the blade will still function perfectly.
