Character Name: Malrath D'havok
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 168 lbs.
Race: Dökkálfar (svartálfar, dark elf, trow, drow. Same thing)
Age: 43
Gender: Male
Title: None
Occupation: Assassin
Physical Description: Malrath looks much like anyone would expect a dökkálfar to appear, with white hair and skin the color of darkest coal. He is tall and muscular for his race, but by other races' standards, he is still very lean (though still tall). He lets his straight, snowy hair down over his shoulders, not too concerned with whether it's cut straight or not. He dresses in dark colors, wearing a gnome battle-cloak (which he utilizes to great effect) over everything. His boots are much the same as the ones he wears while pretending to be Gabonno Mbongja; fine, black leather dancing boots. Malrath is fond of silver jewelry and wears a few simple rings and a fine-chained, multiple-piercing earring in his left ear.
Weal or Woe: Malrath, unlike his alias, Gabonno, is ruthless but not brash like his twin brother, Perion (who disguises himself as Jhalil). Malrath is a thinker, preferring to have a solid plan with numerous contingencies, over rushing headlong into danger. He has a hatred for all creatures human but has been known to willingly associate with a few of them. He sees himself as a more draconian Robin Hood to non-humans, especially those who have met misfortune at the hands of the short-lived creatures. When killing humans guilty of subjugating other races, Malrath relishes the moment, finding creative ways to kill... and then to dress the kill as a warning to others.
Personality: Malrath, unlike his alias, is rather quiet but with a dry and sometimes morbid sense of humor. He cares for his twin brother and is extremely protective of him.
Weapons and armor: Malrath carries the same weapons that he does as Gabonno, but he also always carries his favorite spiked chain with him. With it, he can wreak havoc, just the way his last name implies. He wears the same mithril shirt and dastana that he does as Gabonno; Malrath has as of yet never been publicly seen without a disguise, so no connections have ever been made.
Magic: Malrath does not cast spells, but his heritage gives him access to a few small powers. Most curiously, the racial abilities in both Malrath and Perion manifested more powerfully than in most, giving them access to a few additional powers. They find it ironic that such abilities are usually considered the blessing of Lloth, whom the brothers despise. Being dökkálfar, Malrath and Perion have a natural resistance to magic, and it is difficult to ensnare them with any spell, particularly enchantments. Specifically, Malrath can, once per day each, create patterns of light in the area around himself, create a globe of darkness up to a goodly distance away, and wreathe himself or someone else in painless, purple flames. By sacrificing two of these abilities for the day, he can create one of the following effects: he can snuff out all nonmagical light sources within a stone's throw of himself, or he can become able to discern invisible creatures and objects for a few minutes, or he can create one to four images of himself to confuse and confound enemies. By sacrificing all three abilities at once, he can disappear in a blinding flash of light and remain invisible for a brief period of time.
History: Malrath and Perion D’havok are drow twins born in the underground dökkálfar city of Ssaztrazixil. The boys were sold to human slavers by their own parents at the age of 6. For nearly twenty years, the boys were worked nearly to death on a farm, forced to work under the blazing sun, which is more hurtful to dökkálfar skin than to most others. At one point during their childhood, the younger of the two, Perion (by a margin of seventeen minutes) was caught attempting to escape. This was not an unusual occurrence, but in his haste, Perion accidentally knocked another slave onto a pitchfork, killing the other wretch. For his transgressions, Perion’s legs were broken before he was put back to work, so he would have a more difficult time running away. The break in his bones, although he has come to cope with the old injury to the point where functionality is not in question, never fully healed, and his legs’ growth was slightly stunted, putting him three inches shy of his brother’s six foot height. Aside from this, the two brothers are identical in every respect. This is something that greatly amused them, enough so that whenever one of them gained a scar, the other would copy the wound onto his own body, making distinguishing the two even more difficult.
The boys somehow survived long enough as slaves to grow into young men, possibly because of the dökkálfar penchant for survival. Even though the boys did not display the expected cruelty of their kind—they had not grown up long enough in dökkálfar society to absorb that trait—the other slaves treated them very badly. Malrath found himself standing up for his brother most days, because the others considered the crippled boy an easy target, and ever since, Malrath has been extremely protective of his shorter brother. One day, though, the other slaves took things too far, and Malrath nearly found himself an only child when he found the others in a ring around Perion, shouting for another one of their number, a dwarf, to strangle the younger brother. Stepping in, Malrath barely managed to save Perion’s life, the strong dökkálfar prying the dwarf free and wrestling the creature into submission.
That night, both dökkálfar sneaked away from their dormitory after locking all the doors, a skill Perion had been practicing for some time—and which had helped him escape. Malrath used some spare rope and other tools to quietly tie the shutters closed over the windows from the outside. Then, with the stealth and skill only known to dökkálfar, the vengeful duo stole inside their masters’ mansion and, silent as a chill breeze, killed their masters and the entire family in their sleep. Nobody noticed until the slaves’ dormitory went up in flames ten minutes later. The slaves, trapped inside, died that night.
Knowing there would be quite the price on their heads, the D’havok twins set out into the world. They briefly visited the dökkálfar lands to the southeast but found little to interest them there. After having lived in such a cruel place for so long, they had little desire to rejoin such a society—especially considering male dökkálfar are second-class citizens. But after adventuring around in the world and gaining some worldly knowledge (such as spending enough time in the dökkálfar lands to learn Undercommon and dökkálfar sign language), the two of them gravitated toward the human lands again, if only because there was much intrigue to be had there. That, and perhaps the twins were feeling a little more rancorous than they had realized. Nevertheless, they now reside in various cities (owning at least one building in many places), disguising themselves as visiting members of nobility from various countries. Often, one of the siblings will spend a day or two in disguise while the other uses whatever distraction the first sibling creates in order to accomplish a goal—and accomplishments (and some failures) are what mark the pair’s history. A few of the cruelest nobility have fallen to Perion’s silent blade or were found eviscerated by lacerations that could only have been made by a shark.
The pair switches disguises every few months, in general, to avoid suspicion, as well as to shake things up for fun. The twins have recently settled on identities that claim to hail from the Great Kingdom of Kalina. Their names are Effendi Gabonno Mbongja and Jhalil Mbongja (“Effendi” is the equivalent of “Sir” in English, as of a master or lord of a mansion with generous holdings or to masters of a profession). The two claim to be brothers (this, at least, is true!), although Jhalil lost his title after frivolously gambling away all his holdings. Gabonno has generously offered to take Jhalil with him on a voyage, a “business trip” to the northern continent in order to show the younger man how the world works and to hopefully teach him a lesson in finance. The two appear as “men of swarthy complexion” (black), and while Gabonno is dressed in “traditional clothing accented with a cloak purchased locally,” Jhalil tends to favor more eccentric clothing.
Only when someone points out the pair's similarity does Gabonno “remember” to mention that he and Jhalil are identical twins. If asked about their curiously colored eyes, they claim to have 1/32 Feyrdust blood in them, and it happened to manifest in the color of their eyes. “Admittedly, it must have been quite the shock for our parents, do you not agree? Unfortunately, we also inherited the elephant-size ears of our kind, as well.”
The two of them are a curious sight to any familiar with the northern lands, and the brothers admit to knowing little about the country they are visiting, and either one may ask why they get strange looks when in the company of other races. They admit that reveling with the other races is quite a treat, as few decide to stay in Kalina for very long; “The nurturing sun is too much for elven skin, and dwarves never stop sweating, so they leave.”
When receiving magical spells, the two of them claim to be a little shy of magic, and so must “brace” themselves to receive it. In reality, this is so that they can lower their spell resistance.
The two brothers would and will never betray each other, and there are no others who enjoy this level of trust and protection.
The D’havok twins have been involved in the murders of several relatively-prominent figures in the area from time to time. Or rather, they were the murderers. The twins do not wantonly kill those who aggravate them, instead carefully selecting targets and planning out the job beforehand, sometimes spending weeks and months gathering information and plotting their target’s destruction. No one has yet discovered who was behind these murders. All those killed by the D’havok twins have been humans who treated non-humans with particular cruelty. While Perion tends to stalk his prey quietly and then go in for the kill, Malrath tends to be slightly more vicious, enjoying turning the tables against human oppressors. He particularly enjoys cornering his victim after subduing or killing anyone who might come to his target’s aid. Then, in a darkened room, he drops the end of his spiked chain on the floor, dragging it along as he slowly stalks his pitiful prey, a slight grin forming on his face as he listens to whimpers and pleas for mercy. Then, ruthless, he whips his spiked chain in a great arc, burying its barbs in his victim’s body and using the chain to constrict the poor sod until it dies.
The most recent killing by the D’havok twins was a cleric of Boccob who had been performing “experiments” on babies stolen from non-human families, in the “pursuit of knowledge”. The baby-thief had been plaguing the non-human society for several months, and the results of the cleric’s experiments, when they survived, were twisted and gruesome remnants of the creatures they had once been. Even most of the human citizens were disgusted to learn who was behind the cleric’s atrocities, especially after he was found nailed, naked, to the symbol of Boccob over the church’s doors, his intestines pulled partially out to resemble an umbilical cord. Because the twins’ then-disguise had had to get close to the cleric in order to learn his secret, they decided to retire that cover and fall into obscurity for a month while restocking their supplies, renting a new apartment, and designing new identities, Gabonno and Jhalil.

Player: [NightHawk]
Character Name: Perion D'havok
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 121 lbs.
Race: Dökkálfar
Age: 43
Gender: Male
Title: None
Occupation: Assassin
Physical Description: Perion looks just like his brother, but three inches shorter. He dresses in somewhat more eccentric and extravagant clothing, except when the job calls for something more subtle.
Weal or Woe: Perion is just as on the fence as his brother, though he tends to act first, regret later.
Personality: Perion's personality is much different than Malrath's. Perion is the more talkative of the two, and it amuses both of them that he tends to play more taciturn roles; while he prefers talking to silence, he understands that his brother is the better at the job. He tends to take Malrath's protection for granted, often neglecting his own defenses and expecting his brother to cover for him. Malrath has never failed yet. Perion is a doer, in contrast to Malrath being a thinker, but he is also the more emotional of the two in regards to other people. Malrath often thinks that Perion's attachment to members of other (non-human) races to be rather foolish, but Perion can't help it.
Weapons and armor: Perion wields the same weapon he does as Jhalil, actually an elven thinblade.
Magic: See this entry under Malrath. Perion can use all his abilities twice as often as Malrath can.
History: See this entry under Malrath.
