Aaronville

Aaronville is a fiefdom of science and technology. Founded by the dragonman king, Aaron Fellrise, Aaronville has always been the center of knowledge for the Avilion nation. Famous for its laboratories and observatories, Aaronville is never shy of the intelligent tourist. However, since it is also the hub of medical science it can treat many deadly wounds or poisons.

Rinji entered Aaronville's square from the north, and was relieved to find it wasn't quite as crowded or imposing as Midgard's town square. After taking a short break from all the walking, he obvserved the bounties posted around the square, and was pleased to find something that didn't look too threatening. "What in Terra is a Bolla? Well, I imagine it can't be too dangerous, else they would offer a larger reward. Perhaps the governor would be interested in explaining..." he mused to himself.

After taking a lengthier break and observing the city from his seat, Rinji stood and walked slowly to the Aaronville Governor's Mansion, slightly worried that the governor had more important business on his mind. Having no idea where else to go, however, this seemed his only option that would lead him anywhere.

About an hour or so later, Rinji returned from the mansion and walked over to inspect the well in the town square. "So there's supposed to be a substantially large wyrm in here, huh. Well, it can't be too worse than some of the things I've fought off before. There was that one job..." he was muttering to himself as he peered curiously at the well.

As Rinji near the well, two eyes poked up from the opening much like a crocodile breeching the river surface. A low hiss tunneled out of the well, and both eyes followed the motions of Rinji intently.

Rinji was alerted by the hissing noise, then saw the eyes. He could see what the governor meant by hiding in the well, now. He cautiously advanced two steps, and prepared to defend against an assault by the wyrm.

Knowing well it lost the advantage of stealth, the Bolla coiled up out of the well with its head flat on the surface of the stone edge. It's body curled to such a length, it was difficult for Rinji to believe that it was merely the length of a man's height. The governor must have referred to how far it could stretch from the well. It's head remained motionless while it's body coiled in loops around itself, perhaps a tactic to confuse prey. A single flick of a thick forked tongue sparked a sudden lunge of its head towards Rinji in a vicious snap!

Rinji was hoping for this response, and turned, placing his right upper arm at the forefront, hoping to ward off some of the damage with his wool shoulder pad.

Rinji underestimated the muscle behind this serpentine, though his defensive stance was near perfect. The bite dealt 1.4 damage, despite the resistance offered by the shoulder pad. Luckily the Bolla did not manage to latch itself to Rinji's shoulder and retracted to it's previous coiled position at the top of the well.

Rinji returned blows by firing a serrated arrow from his bow at the Bolla, and then stepping to his right.

Rinji's arrow did not fly true, passing through the coils of the Bolla. It did not go unnoticed, and the Arrow itself was undamaged. The Bolla was briefly distracted to see what had flown behind it.

Irritated with himself, but still collected, Rinji shook his head, and fired another serrated arrow and a footed arrow seperately, thanking his ancestors that the Bolla was young and easily distracted.

Rinji's serrated arrow struck right at the back of the Bolla's skull, dealing 6 damage! The Bolla writhed about while Rinji prepared his second shot, and with a lucky hit, the footed arrow passed right through the neck of the serpent, causing 4.2 damage. The Bolla fell over the edge of the well and snapped the footed arrow in its neck. With the amount blood pouring out from its head and neck wounds, the serpent was surely dead.

Battle Over!
1 Skill point awarded.

A young boy ran up next to Rinji, having witnessed the entire battle. To such a young lad, it was an epic conflict that he'd not seen in all his eight years. His mouth dropped wide open in disbelief, as the Bolla was the largest snake he'd ever seen.

Heindrick, who'd been watching from his window, ran out of his mansion with arms to the air. "Truly amazing!" he shouted, picking up the arrow that flew behind the Bolla to hand it to Rinji as he made his way over. "I doubt I would have ever thought of using the first arrow as a distraction." the governor said cheerful, shaking the hand of Mr. Sying, "Good show, to think I might have had doubts of your wyrm slaying ability."

Heindrick awards Rinji 50cr. for the Bolla slaying, & a free night's stay at the mansion.

Rinji sighed in relief, and took a moment to offer a thought of thanks to whatever spirit guided his arrows. He walked over to Heindrick with a small grin. "Gosh, Mr. Governor, I had expected it to be a bit more fierce, the way you talked about it. Though I suppose this cut in my arm might be a bothersome wound for a while. I think I will indeed take you up on your offer for the room at your mansion. Thank you for retrieving my arrow, too. I'd hate to lose more of these than I have to. Ah, speaking of which, I'd better skin this Bolla to get my other arrow back. Do you know of a local butcher that could use this meat? It might attract other unwanted guests we wouldn't want..." Rinji returned the Bolla, rolled it out of the well, and off into the grass, and began skinning it, trying not to make much of a scene, though he could feel the eyes on his back. Skinning a wyrm couldn't be a pleasant sight for anyone.

Rinji loots 4 Bolla scales & 1 Serrated Arrow.

"We'll have someone cart the remains to the city for disposal, though I doubt a butcher would make much use of Bolla meat." Heindrick replied, and called over one of the townsfolk to hire a merchant with a cart. "You are indeed a wyrmslayer." the governor watched Rinji skinning the Bolla with a bit of delight though his stomach was churning, "Having that creature out of our well is far more important. Now we can get to work cleaning the spring, and not import water from the city anymore. Of course, with that Kulshedra roaming about in Avilion, Bolla are likely to infest other wells in this country too. I hope the knights are able to hunt it down soon enough."

Standing up again from his finished work, Rinji nodded. "Let me know if there's any work I could do to help with cleaning the well, or if there are any other lurking monsters around town you need to get rid of. For now, though, I'll turn in early, courtesy of your hospitality. That fight took it out of me." He yawned, and made a motion to stretch, but stopped as his cut arm twinged, then walked back to Aaronville Governor's Mansion.

Heindrick followed Rinji into the mansion to be a good host for the wyrm slayer.

Rinji departed from the mansion the next morning, and left Aaronville, travelling north, back to the Fantasma City of Midgard.

2006-08-12 [Aradon Templar]: Since I'm only vaguely familiar with the fighting system, two questions come to mind- moving after attacking is permitted or not permitted? And for a bow, does the short ranged attack use arrows, or am I bashing him with my bow at a distance of two blocks?

2006-08-12 [Adaman]: Anything that seems realistically possible is allowed. Moving after attacking is only limited to how many actions are allowed (or stamina to overdrive a +1 action). You can fire arrows at short range, though you put yourself in a delicate balance of threat. The more threatening you become, the more that monster wants to kill you and will likely use all in its disposal to kill you. (Since this is your first battle, there is no real threat of that unless you decide to dive down the Bolla's throat) The "Mêlée" attack of the bow is merely swiping the bow itself at the enemy, hence why it's limited to short range. Long Range 4-6 is 6 maximum range, but 4 is the maximum range without accuracy loss.

2006-08-12 [Aradon Templar]: Short range indicates simply 1 space, I suppose. So the 4-6 range for long range indicates the maximum range, I guess.

2006-08-12 [Adaman]: Yes, short range is always 1 space, the numbers after short range refer to infighting precision. It is a bit confusing, but when you think of a Short Range 1 Dagger fighting a Short range 5 Zweihander, it makes a bit more sense. It's a delicate defense/offense bonus that depends on who is the attacker and who is the defender.

2006-08-12 [Adaman]: That was a short battle. The first arrow hits an automatic deathblow, the second hits a high roll as well. Could not believe it.

2006-08-12 [Aradon Templar]: Gosh. I'm just lucky it didn't work in reverse on me. I can't say I won that battle out of skill, either. I'll have to find another newbie battle somewhere, I suppose.

2006-08-12 [Adaman]: The bow and having only 1 enemy really helped you make this a short conflict. You'll have to loot it in order to use your skinning skill and get your serrated arrow back from its skull.
