Thanatopsis
With technological discoveries slowing down, after comforts are easily ensured for the rich who can afford such Luxieries, concern has turned to protecting these luxieries.
As anger festers in the ever expanding slums of the cities, the rich are hoarding the money to themselves more and more. Theft is higher then ever, and riots are but an argument away, those with money, are more concerned with how to keep their cars, then how many children go hungry on the streets from there money mongering.
The military has taken great investments of there own into the creation of newer forms of security from technology. However, this time, they aren't adding camera's and security locks on homes, they are adding chromosomes, and plasmids to people.
The new form of security, is now inhuman puppets to be used as guard dogs. Supported by the military and rich donors, labs are closing in on perfecting processes to manipulating the DNA strain; just on time to help battling against there own city itself.
Upper City
The middle, upper middle, and prominantly, the rich classes reside within this portion of the city. This is the roof, or ceiling to the lower part of the city. It is as the second story high of Thanatopsis.
Also this contains the Rice institute, as well as the military installation. In prior times, the military installation was used to train and harbor military personnel. That hasn't changed, however instead of being shipped off to posts in other countries to either keep the peace or help incite war, mostly, they stay within Thanatopsis, on staff.
Very few portions of the upper city are even particularly dirty, or could be referred to as a slum. The taxes of the rich go to keeping there part of the city clean. The technology and comforts are all the best in the upper city. The upper middle and rich classes are capable of affording cars and vehicles of an all new design. Flight is a common luxury for those with money. Flying to work has become an affordable expectance, rather then something for only insanely rich moogles. These people have become dependent on this high level of technology. Few straying very far from its use. Essentialy robbing themselves of the skills of a more average life, with machines that perform of the day to day, and especially the more extravagant tasks in life.
Lower City
A very dirty and grimy place. This part of the city, does not see the light of day. Very little grows here, and very little the does, stays healthy for long. This section of the city is smaller then the industrius upper city, and does neothing but helps to feed the thriving economy above. They are the unchangeable caste set within Thanatopsis. Many can easily descend within lower city, and become stuck within the grimy confines of its poor and depressing living areas. However only in special cases, may somoene who lives in the lower city, ever move and live up. Not without aid of the rich and influential may that be possible. The place is filled with polution and pain. For the past decades people have been living and dieing, knowing the lower city as there home, and only home. Few ever truly have the oppourtunity to bask within the sunlight, or dance under the stars. No other place within the nation is filled with as much depression and disease as this one.
The Rice Institute
Located in the Upper City, at the city's edge.
Lab 5
The most widely funded of the 5 labs, this is by far the largest and most well staffed of them all. However due to apperances, and laws, this lab is not known of by the public. The government and military has secretly been funding and supporting all of the labs.
The lab is in the back of the entire facility, and never seen by the public. It's where the entire seeds project takes place. The seeds children, born and raised within the walls. All the teaching and training facilities are held within, as well as the dorms for both scientists, seeds, and all other affiliated personel. The birthing tubes, and the chemical experimentatio
n and creation labs are also held within. There is even an internal garden inside for the children who do play, to play.
This lab is sourrounded by a 10 foot concret wall adorned with barbed wire at the top and two guard towers, one on each side. The guards are trained snipers and ready at all times.
Lab 4
Animal testing lab. This is where the cache of rats reside. Along with a few sets of larger animals, such as dogs, monkeys, and even a few parakeets. This is where sets of ideas for sets of DNA replacement and insertion is all tested. Each set of DNA in every generatino passed through numerous tests upon different sets of animals, first...before being used on seeds. All of those generations, and all the failed ideas as well. So many sets of twisted organisms. Over 90 percent of the animals that underwent the gene replacements exhibited intense behavioural changes, so drastic that they are considered a danger to themselves and everything around them. Some of the mice, and monkeys, went completely violent, others whent extremely docile. Several parakeets lost there voices entirely, others had such an intense growth in possible vocabulary, that one might swear they were talking to a person. There are very few animals that even developed would could be remotely referred to as a success. There are, and have been more atrocities in this lab then all the others combined.
Lab 3
Plant testing labratory. This is a lab with more subtle genetic tests run. Plants have a much more simple genetic structure then animals. They test individual gene replacements on plants, and use them to test the heredity of the gene. How often it is able to be passed on to next generations of plants. That is ofcourse if the plant doesn't die from having the gene in its code. Or if the plant is still capable of reproducing at all. If a plant can't survive the test of the gene, meaning that if the gene kills the plant, then it isn't even considered to move on to the animals. This is the first of the 2 testing organisms before it makes it to be used for the seeds.
Lab 2
Reasearch and development as well as public doctor's offices. This lab is open to the lower city. With enough money, and a referral to be admitted to upper city, denizens of lower city may rise up and be treated, for a sum of course, by the more equipped and qualified doctors within this lab. Another way for the lab to bring in money, it's also a show of psuedo altruism for the lower city dwellers. Although most doctors offices within upper thanatopsis would be seen as lowly or dirty for allowing lower city occupants to be seen there, however the rice institue is able to make it out as a show of kindness and care. Trying to divert the attentions of others from there real objectives.
Lab 1
This is the main building and opened to the public. Inside are assorted offices and the largest collection of books in the city. It is the second largest building, but is the tallest of them all. Four floors of books, any could be taken out with nothing more then a library card. Another show of philanthropy from the lab. Making itself out to be a caring institute, when in reality it's merely another cover story to hide there real activities.
