Shadows

Pt. 2: The second alchemist

Long ago, in a land not know among this world, a boy named Ryu Kiris unlocked the powers of alchemy and tried to use those powers to kill an evil king known in that land as Kuzima Shirigoshi. He failed. Instead, he banished that king to the land of darkness. That evil locked away so long ago is seeping through to this world and its time for another alchemist to rise and finish what he started.

Ch. 1 The First Attack

"Cody wake, up its time to go." says Shannon Kelly, the mother of Cody Lawler, a young man of 16. With blond hair down to his shoulders, his blue-gray eyes hold a hidden strength. He tends to wear a green shirt with blue jeans and a black trench coat. He also happens to be the protagonist of this little tale.
She leaves as Cody begins to wake. He hesitantly crawls out of bed and walks to his closet. On his way, he trips and smacks his head on his desk. Cody lays there and starts to snore. Just at that moment Chelsea, Cody’s sister walks in. "Cody? Are you ready?" she says and then notices him lying on the floor. "What the heck?" she wonders as she starts to nudge him with her toe. Cody lets out a large snore. Then Chelsea gets an idea. "WAKE UP!” Chelsea yells at the top of her lungs.
"AAAAHHHHHH" Cody yells startled. Then he notices Chelsea. "Chelsea, Chelsea.
What, may I ask, the hell are you doing in my room." Cody says rather calmly.
"Mom sent me out here to see why you aren’t ready yet." Chelsea replies.
"Well, get out any way." Cody tells her.
"Fine." she snaps as she leaves his room.
Once the door closes behind her Cody goes to change and trips yet again. "AKKK" Cody says as he falls. "Ow…”
A few minuets later Cody is in the kitchen changed with his backpack slung over his shoulder.
"Where are you going Cody?" Shannon asks looking at his bag quizzically.
"School, where else would I go?” Cody replies as he grabs a pop tart and heads to the door.
"Why would you go there its Sunday?" Shannon asks but Cody is already gone.
As Cody jogs up to the school, he notices that the windows are dark and the gates are locked.
"Cody? What are you doing here?" Says a girl’s voice from behind him.
Cody spins around quickly, startled by the voice. "Uh? Oh hey Samantha. Do you know why the schools closed?" Cody asks her.

"Um, yeah it's Sunday." Samantha replies sum what hesitantly.
"Damnit, I'm such an idiot" Cody says and leans his head on the fence.
"No, no. You’re not an idiot." Samantha tells him and then bursts out laughing. Cody pulls his head up slightly and glares at Samantha. "I'm sorry I couldn’t keep a straight face." Samantha says admits the laughs.
"I hate you." Cody says bluntly after she stops laughing.
"I'm sorry Cody, so where are you going now?" Samantha asks.
"Church I guess, I got nothing better to do. It’s right across that construction site.” Cody replies pointing towards a plot of land with frames of houses. "What about you?" Cody asks her.
"I was heading to Katy’s house." Samantha replies.
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow then?" Cody asks. Samantha just nods her head. "Kay then, bye." Cody says as he begins to walk away.
"Bye." Samantha waves after him.
As Cody enters the construction site, he gets a strange feeling that some one is watching him but decides to ignore it. When he gets to the middle of the site he trips and land on his face. "I really need to stop doing that." Cody says as he pulls himself into a sitting position and looks at what he tripped on. "A book?" he says looking at what he found. It’s a medium sized book with a large purple opal set in the cover. "Elemental Alchemy?" Cody says as he reads the title. Suddenly he is over swept with a strange of time slowing down. Cody notices this and spins around only to come face to face to the point of a sword. "WHOA!" Cody says jumping out of the way. Cody notices the thing behind the blade. Only one thing can describe the creature and that is what Cody said “HOLY CRAP, YOUR NOT HUMAN!” The creature prepares to strike again. Cody prepares to fight and dodges the attack to come up behind the thing. Cody spins around and elbows it in the head knocking it to the ground. He then takes the advantage to pick up a p.v.c pipe lying on the ground. He turns around to face his opponent and sees it is already off the ground and heading towards him. "Crap!" Cody says with barely enough time to bring up the pipe to block the blow, the thing recoils from the shock of Cody’s speed. Cody has always been fast but this speed surprised even him. He sees an opening, decides to use it, and swings the pipe into the things side. The thing doubles over from the pain. Cody continues his attack and swings the pipe into the back of the creatures head. It falls to the ground and disappears in a puff of smoke. Cody stays in an attack position breathing heavily. "That…was…weird.” Cody says to himself as he drops the pipe. He then picks up his stuff and heads to church.
As Cody walks in the pastor has already started. Cody spots his friends, Peter and Keith, near the front of the room a few pews in front of an old couple. "What happened to you?" Peter asks as Cody sits next to them.
"Wha?" Cody asks a bit distracted.
"What happened, your face is covered in dirt and you look exhausted." Keith replies.
"Shush." One of the old people says to them.
Cody ignores her and keeps talking. "Oh, that. Um, I'll tell you after church."
As the three of them walk out of church Cody turns to the other two and begins telling them what happened.
At the end, Cody holds out the book to show Peter and Keith. "And this is what I found." He tells them. Cody then notices they wandered to where the battle took place, the footprints still in the soft ground. Keith takes the book from Cody’s hand and flips open the cover, Peter looks over his shoulder.
"Hey Cody does the name Ryu Kiris mean anything to you?" Keith asks Cody showing him the name hand written in the front cover, it reads ‘This book is for the next alchemists. Take it and finish what we started. -Ryu Kiris'
"That’s weird," Cody says as he takes the book from Keith and starts flipping through the book, "this entire book seems hand written."
Peter takes the book from Cody and turns to the first chapter. "Let’s see what it has to offer us." Peter says as he begins to read aloud. "‘Every person has an element; alchemy is calling upon that element and causing it to manifest into a physical force.' That sounds cool." Peter says after reading.
"Here let me read some." Cody takes the book from Peter and starts where he left off. "‘To do this the element is manifested in an alchemic circle like this.'" Cody kneels in the dirt and draws a circle with a small square in the center. "'just put your hands on the circle and concentrate.’”
Cody places his hands on the circle and concentrates all of his of his energy into the circle. Cody waits and after a minute or so, nothing happens. “Cody, I don’t think anything‘s going to happen…” Keith says. Just as Keith says that, the circle glows and a large tornado erupts from the circle. The heavy winds nock Keith and Peter off their feet, Cody just stares at the tornado. As this goes on, none of them knows that the tornado is picking up loose debris from around the building frames. Soon Keith is able to tear his eyes away from the tornado long enough to notice a large piece of wood heading towards Cody’s head. “Cody, Look Out!” Keith yells and pulls Cody off the circle just as the wood passes. As soon as Keith pulls Cody off the tornado disappears just as quickly as it appeared, leaving a long sword right in the center of the circle. Then the debris falls from the sky all around the three of them, missing them all by very little.
Cody notices something strange about the debris but decides to think nothing of it, and then his attention turns to the sword.
“Where the hell did that come from?” Keith asks pointing at the sword.
“That‘s weird…” Peter says as he goes to the sword to try to pick it up. He tries to pull it up with one hand and fails, he then tries to pull it out with both hands, again, to no avail.
Cody just sits on the ground staring at the sword.
“Back away weakling.” Keith says to Peter as he walks up to the sword.
Peter backs away and watches Keith try to pull out the sword with the same results.
“Damn, what the hell is keeping that blade in the ground…” Keith says after giving up on pulling out the sword. Without saying a word, Cody walks up to the sword.
“Ha, if neither me or Peter can get that sword out then you defiantly can’t.” Keith says as he watches Cody walk up to the blade. Cody reaches out, grabs the hilt of the sword with one hand, and easily pulls out the sword.
“The one who summons the blade is the owner. The book calls it the Demon‘s Fang, but something‘s wrong, the book described it with two blades connected at the hilt, one short, one long…” Cody explains.
As Cody talks to Peter and Keith, a dark shadow begins to pour out of the hole were the sword was. Cody senses this and turns around to look at it.
“Something wrong Cody?” Peter asks.
“Everything’s fine…I‘m just a bit worried about that…” Cody points to the darkness oozing out of the hole. Cody leans in to take a closer look, he then reaches out to touch the stuff, but just as his hand gets close a large door rises from the darkness, twice as tall as Cody is.
“That can't be good…” Keith says staring at the door. After a few minuets, the door slowly opens and a dark figure steps through. The figure pops his neck and steps towards Cody.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Ryu…” The figure says to Cody.
Cody gets the blade ready, “Who are you…?” Cody says to the figure.
“So, you’re not Ryu… I must have been sealed for quite sometime then…” the person steps closer to Cody. “You must be the next alchemist… My name is Kuzima Shirigoshi, but you may call me Shadow. I suggest you start using it to plea for your life.” Shadow pulls out a sword that looks identical to the one in Cody’s hands.
“I plan to do no such thing…” Cody replies. He then glances over to Peter and Keith; they are standing next to each other standing completely still, frozen with fear. “Guess I have to do this myself…”
Suddenly Shadow rushes at Cody. Cody barely has time to raise the sword in time to block the attack.
“What have I gotten myself into…?” Cody says to himself as he continues to block the onslaught from Shadow. After a few more attacks, Shadow changes his attack in mid-swing and slices Cody across the chest.
“Erg!” Cody grunts falling to his knees. Cody notices the pattern of the debris from earlier and gets an idea. “Peter! Activate the wood! It fell in the circle!”
Peter finally snaps out of it and realizes what Cody is talking about, “Okay!” Peter kneels down and activates the circle just as Shadow is about to land the final blow. Suddenly lighting strikes all around the inside of the circle inches from Cody's face. Shadow disappears in a cloud of darkness, and the lighting stops just as fast as it started leaving behind two lightning bolt-shaped daggers.
“What the hell was that!?” Keith yells as he walks up to Cody.
Peter walks to the daggers, picks them up and stands there staring at the weapons in his hands. “I have no clue and it seems Peter found his weapon… I wonder what all this means…” Cody replies.
Peter continues to stare at the daggers in his hands. “I‘ll tell you what this means, it means we‘re all CRAZY!” Keith yells getting frustrated.
“Keith you need to calm down, every-” Cody says getting cut off.
“NO YOU NEED TO START BEING CONCERENED!” Keith interrupts, he then stomps his foot on the ground accidentally causing the circle to activate. Suddenly the earth twists up under peter throwing him out of the circle, then just as suddenly as it came up it crumbles reveling a large hammer.
“AND ONE MORE THING…” Keith notices what he did. “Did…I just… do that… Is that hammer…mine…?”
As Peter falls, he lands flat on his face and slides a couple of inches.
Cody looks in the book for the name of the weapon as Keith cautiously inches towards it. "According to the book, it's called Gia's Hammer, it's the weapon that was passed down the..." Cody has a hard time making out the next word. "Shiromaru family of Dain. Where ever the hell that is..."
Peter walks up to Cody as Keith gets close to the hammer, suddenly Peter realizes something. "Hey Cody, where'd that cut across your chest go?"
Cody looks a Peter with a confused look and suddenly realizes what he's talking about. He looks at the slice in his shirt and moves it to find unbroken skin. "This keeps getting stranger and stranger..."
Later that evening Cody lays on his back in his room trying to make sense of the days events, the book laying next to his head. You should just burn the book, it‘s more trouble than it‘s worth… A voice in Cody’s head says in the silence. “No, I need this… I don’t know why just yet… But I need it…” He tells the voice. Suddenly a wind sweeps through the room. Cody sits straight up wondering what’s going to happen next. Then accept your fate! the voice booms. The wind picks up the book and throws it to the ground opening to a page titled Summoning. Then just as suddenly as it started, the wind stops.
“What the hell!?” Cody yells, startled. He picks up the book and reads, ‘If your reading this, then we failed. Hopefully you won’t. My name is Ryu Kiris. I, along with my two siblings, Kenshin and Aryall, my best friend Tacune Shiromaru, his brother Henaru and an elf named Kiro, were chosen as the saviors of Tellrius. We have, or rather had, a gift. We could control the very elements themselves. Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth and Nature respectively. We have come to call our ability alchemy. But there was a seventh element, Darkness. This was controlled by the one who called himself King, Kuzima Shirigoshi. Our job was to kill him. This false king has thrown our land into chaos. He has the ability to summon armies of creatures we’ve come to call shadows. Shadows have a human-like appearance but they feel no emotion, no remorse and worst of all, no fear. Tomorrow we make our final assault on Castle Telray where Kuzima resides. If all goes well we shall vanquish the darkness from this land… if not then the world is doomed. This final chapter tells of how to summon the spirits of the elements. After this I will send this book to the other side of the gate, I don’t know what’s on the other side, but hopefully it leads to the next alchemist in case of our demise. -Ryu, June 8th 182 B.C.’
“Wow…” Cody says to himself, “They attacked on my birthday… nearly 2300 years ago…” Cody then notices something on the bottom of the page, ‘P.S. What a way to celebrate my birthday, huh?’ There‘s a small pause as Cody begins to realize what he just read, “Holy Hell!” He yells and throws down the book, in doing so he accidentally activates one of the circles. A huge wind blows through the room nearly picking the T.V. off the stand. Cody covers his head and waits for the wind to die down. After a minute, the wind dies down and Cody slowly uncovers his head and looks around the room.
“Hello.” says a voice next to him.
“Holy shit!!” Cody jumps in response to the voice, nearly falling of the bed.
Next to Cody sits a young man no older than Cody with jet black hair tied in the back and loose in the front, covering a part of his face in the front. He wears a red trench coat over a black shirt, his eye’s show wisdom beyond his age.
