Review written by [Blaithin], one of our prospective Heralder-to-be-s.
Prehistoric North America. In a time when droughts ravaged the land and wanderlust was the only real means to ensure survival. This was the fertile ground in which blossomed an idea of perverted power. An idea lead by Heavy Beaver to exterminate all of the 'pollution' causing the severe drought and decline of the buffalo. With his altered sense of power, Heavy Beaver, Spirit Dreamer of the Short Buffalo People, is attempting to gain sole control over all of the immediate territories in his area. But before he can succeed, he must destroy the Anit'ah, Red Hand People, who control the mountains. Unfortunately, there is another obstacle in his way. Obscure and resistant yet the only true hope for the survival of the Spiral. The One who Dances with Fire, Fire Dancer. But can the man chosen to be Fire Dancer even accept power and emerge a true Dreamer? Little Dancer refuses to accept who he is, refuses to join with the One. He denies his Spirit Dreams, merging instead with the love he feels for his clan. He doesn't believe he is capable of what his dreams tell him to do and tries to convince everyone that he is not the one destined to same them. With Little Dancer's vehement refusal and Heavy Beaver's steady assault will the Red Hand people stand a chance? Will there even be hope regarding the survival of power and the Spiral?
For me this book was a must read. It's historical accuracy combined with the talent the author possesses for fiction will teach you about Native American's without you even realizing it. It opens doors in your mind that are generally closed by society as well as giving you appreciation for the world we live in today. Its twisting plot line and hesitant heroes bring to light some of the many dilemmas people face in life. A true member of the First North American's series with intriguing characters that will enmesh you in their lives, hopes, dreams, and desires.
