COME ON, HALF OF THE 2010 WINNERS DON'T EVEN FOLLOW THE 5-7-5 FORMAT.
Their reasoning:
"In English, poets tend to write haiku in three short lines without a fixed syllable count, reasoning that seventeen Japanese syllables do not equate to seventeen English ones."

Fixed verse poetry follows a format. Just because our languages don't perfectly match syllable-wise is not a valid excuse.
I mean, if you write a sonnet, are you gonna drop the iambic pentameter like it's hot? Because you can't pull old school Englais Shakespeare words like "WAND'RING" (DROP DAT E LIKE DA NARCS ON YOUR ASS)?
Yeah, fixed verse is confining. But sometimes I like to fit into a box. Sometimes I like to hide in the refrigerator and pretend I'm cheese. It helps you think from different perspectives. How do we know the true meaning of freedom when we haven't been confined?
There's always free verse (BREAKING THE EVIL CHAINS OF FIXED VERSE OLD GENERATION CONFINES). And always time to try and be as confus as The Waste Land.
TLDR: I don't agree with the syllable leeway that the VCBF people are giving for haiku submissions. Japanese syllables not equating to English syllables is not a good reason.

A friend that I worked with died today.
I later found out my ex was dating him last year.
Work is shit.
Felt the need to catalyze the death process.
Decided to try the cigs that I found at work.
A cat ran to my downstairs porch in order to escape the rain.
Me going out there send it back into the downpour.
There was a chair out there for me, strangely enough.
Smoking is overrated and feels bad man.
Shouldn't of bothered when I'm having seasonal asthma.
