So, uh... Let me tell you a bit about what is going on in the English Philology department (which is no longer a department; they did away with those in the Faculty of Humanities back in 2008 before I even started there) here in Oulu. Last academic year, Professor Anthony Johnson jumped ship and spirited himself away to Åbo Akademi, the Swedish-speaking university in Turku. He visits at frequent intervals, giving guest lectures and handling things with the Irish Festival. However, the move meant that quite a few post-grads had to shuffle their lives accordingly. A friend of mine who is working on her PhD still lives in Oulu but moved her studies to Turku. Either way, we were left with a vacancy.

In the autumn, two people applied for the role of Professor. Lisa-Lena, the then-Head of English Philology earned the spot but continued to be absent a lot. That's okay, as Professor she wouldn't need to be around quite so much, right? The other person, Elise, subsequently picked up the duties of Head. All's well and good!

...except not.

This morning, Head informs the students via e-mail that the Professor has passed away. The grapevine tells me it was most likely cancer. So this leaves us sans Professor for the second time within a year and skeptical of how long it will be before this ship sinks at last. It's been leaking for a long while.
