CHAPTER ONE

The sun offered no help to relieve the tortured group from the particularly harsh wind. Cold wind was very common for the area, however, to the two girls raised on the cornfields of little ole’ Jesup, Iowa, the slight September breeze was deadly.
Aurora glances over her shoulder for the eleventh time for the Minooka School Bus. Not seeing it once again, she ducks back into the doorway of the hair salon, where her sister and two other sophomore guys huddled. Her sister, Sarah Maour, playfully hits the taller of the two guys, Danny Madel. Danny was the first homosexual Aurora had ever known personally, but wouldn’t be the last. He had short curly black hair and thin-rimmed glasses, and constantly wore oversized hoodies to de-emphasize his heaviness.
The other sophomore, Josh Mathis, a short blonde haired boy who looked like he belonged in football, wraps his arm around Sarah's midsection, and hoists her easily off the ground. Both Aurora and Danny laugh uncontrollably when she screams at Josh to put her down. When he sets her down, she pushes Josh against the building with all her might, which is followed by more hysterics.
The small group spins dramatically when a ’96 black Dodge Avenger pulls into the shop parking area and honks. The passenger side window rolls down to reveal the mysterious senior, Jon Dempsey. Styled with what used to be a mohawk, but is now slicked back and is accessorized with an expensive leather jacket.
“ Hey! How much for you beautiful?” he playfully smiles at Aurora, who returns the question with an absurd gesture, but continues to the car anyways. “That’s what I was asking!” Sarcastic smile, sarcastic/rude reply. “Need a ride, Aurora?”
“Not really Jon, but I wouldn’t mind one.” Aurora climbs into the warmth of the car, and shuts the door. Her sister and both of the guys run up to the car and look like hurt puppies.
Before Jon has a chance to say something sarcastic, Aurora chimes in and says: “Sorry guys, there’s only enough room for two.” with that she smiles and rolls the window up. Jon pulls out, looking at her hopefully the entire time.

Removing his arm from around her waist to turn into the school parking lot thirty minutes later, Jon whips into his parking place, which cost him $100 upfront, and throws it into park. Moving to climb out, he pauses a moment as if remembering something, then turns back to the sixteen year old blonde haired blue eyed junior, who still sat in a most comfy fashion in the passenger seat. He kisses her twice, smiles, then they both climb out of the car and walk towards the building of over five thousand students.
Once inside the glass entrance doors, Jon and Aurora hug and then split, him going right and her, to the left. She passes the Dean’s (which is equal to our principal) office and turns right in to the orange area. The orange area is an open area with bright orange tiles, vending machines, and lunch tables. It is basically a snack area.
Adjacent to it is the fishbowl, though it’s not literally a fish bowl. It’s called the fish bowl for one reason: it’s an entire glass room. It’s a place were you can receive help with homework, check out colleges, or just sit if your waiting for counselors or someone to pick you up. Decorated with couches and hundreds of books, it really is a most relaxing place to wait (if you’re stressed tired)
Some how, Aurora makes it through the masses of different people, to her own diverse clique of 9 friends: Gabby, Cris, Trisha, Aaron, Justin, Amanda, Matt, Nathan, and Nick. As she walks up, her best friend, and her girlfriend, Gabby Williams, a gorgeous strawberry blonde with dazzling blue gray eyes, jumps over to her.
They hug each other affectionately then join the rest of the group. She notices instantly that Cris, short for Cristian (and Cris is a SHE, not a guy) and Nathan are holding hands and giggling to themselves. She looks to Gabby for an explanation, but just receives a smile, which is all the explanation she needs.

Gabby tugs on her girlfriends Atti-T (Attitude t-shirt) to signal the start of class. As they start down the flooded hallway, the earsplitting bell rings to start the 3-minute time count down to the beginning of school, which starts at 7:55 in the morning.

The way their scheduling works is a system called block scheduling, or b. s. (pun). How it is, is four classes a day, with an hour and half for each class. Their classes are split among two days, A and B. On B days for Aurora, which happens to be her favorite day, she has all classes with her friends. So here’s the schedule for A days:
1A-Creative writing with Ms. Burchett: a rather young blonde, who is really nice and a great person to talk to. She is one of Aurora’s favorite teachers.
2A-English three didn’t happen to be her *I like a lot* list, because of her “over the hill” teacher Mr. Luther. The man looks as dull as he sounds and had a rather nauseating fashion sense (not to be mean or any thing)
3A-used to be Spanish two with Mrs. Styrna, but when her grades dropped because of level differences, Aurora switched to Video Editing. Coach Bontrager or Bono teaches VE. He is fairly young, but very advanced in his knowledge of the Video Editing software and is another of her faves.
4A-during this period, Aurora has Resource (which is the same as a study hall except you’re allowed to have I-pods and P-CD players. Chad, her resource supervisor, lets them bring in food and pop (as long as they hide it if the dean shows up!). However fun it is, Aurora hardly stays in there.
Usually, she catches up with Gabby out side of the trailers. That’s right, trailers. And that’s because they were running out of room in the building and it would be awhile before they could process another plea for a new school. So they moved in two doublewide trailers to send Resources and Inies (in school suspension students). And that’s where they are.
Anyways, Aurora and Gabby would slip their ID’s on, take out their teacher issued passes, and head to the deans office. The entrance has three sets of doors to gain access to the high school: the doors from the out side into the “lobby”, the doors from the “lobby” into the main hallway, and the doors from the “lobby” into the deans office. They always lock the main entrance into the main hallway so you have to go through the dean’s office, no matter what.
Well, after they get through the office, they go to they’re lockers. The set-up of the school is hard to describe but here goes. The school is basically two parallel hallways. If you go left in the main hallway, it carries you to the Orange room/fishbowl, and farther down is the two gyms. If you head right, you enter into the classroom section. At the first crossroads, (cross hallways!) you have a choice, left or right. We’re going left for now.
This hallway is the Math Wing. Aurora doesn’t have any classes down here, though she’s in Geometry. Six classes down the hall way turns to the Math/English Wing. Down at the very end is her English three class, and the room before it is Geometry with Mr. Williams.
Taking another right after her English room, we head in to the English wing. The first door on the left is her 1B class: Speech with her least favorite teacher, Ms. Scwarinski. Farther down is her Creative Writing class, and still further is the main hallway yet again.
Left is the dean’s office/orange room/gym, the immediate right is the entrance to the lunchroom and to her video editing room. Past the entrance to lunch and to the left is the cybrary (which is Minooka’s way of saying “very expensive library with computer’s, laptops, and no interesting books.
The cybrary opens in to the other main hallway that’s parallel to the entrance hallway. This side of the building in every aspect, the mirror image of the other side, except the hall opposite of the Math Wing is the Science Wing and opposite of the English Wing is the Social Studies Wing. In between the S.S. Wing and the Science Wing is non other than, you guessed it, the Social Studies/Science Wing!
Well, two thirds of the way down the hall on the right is her U.S. History Class with Mr. Wendlick, and on the corner of the S.S. wing and the S.S.S. Wing, on the left is where Aurora and Gabby go for forth hour on B days. Up and down the hallways, there are beautiful murals, painted by the senior class every year. The Class of ‘96 did the mural that has set the mascot for Minooka. The picture is a comical version of a fierce Chanooka warrior standing in the start of a brick wall. The way Aurora sees it is, the India represents the students, and Minooka is the brick wall, or the building blocks of their future.
Well, that’s on A day’s this is not an A day, this is a Friday in October, and it’s a B day.

After splitting in the main hall, Gabby heads down the Science Wing where Aurora heads straight for speech. Ms. Scwarinski smiles as she walks in the door and then she returns to her work. Just as she tosses her purse and her books on her seat at the back, she hears a commotion in the hallway.
“F*** this!” says the one guy, and then a loud bang reverberates through the halls as someone was slammed against the lockers. Her teacher leapt from her desk and flew out the door and was quickly followed by the eager corn raised Aurora Wilson.
Once outside the door, the sight is both horrifying and entertaining. Two guys lay on the floor, with Senior Derik Scholer on top of some younger guy she couldn’t see. Derik has wild dark brown hair and just as dark and mysterious eyes, and dressed in a baby blue jersey, he looked ecstatic. The poor kid under his football player weight had blood running down his face as the crazed senior beat him to a pulp.
Some how the kid gets a good measured hit in to Derik’s beautiful face, which knocks him off and into the lockers. He manages to get up, but instead of backing away sensibly, he charges at the football player who happens to be twice his size. All of a sudden, Aurora recognizes who he is. His name is Zach Pisut, an editor at the MCHS Newspaper.
The same editor who wrote an article on Gay Rights. The same editor who just happens to be gay himself. The same editor who has hundreds of kids placing “head points” on him, and those points were quickly being collected by Derik. Zach collides into Derik's stomach roughly and sends the quarter backer to the ground. He has little time to celebrate his achievement, for as soon as Derik crumples to his feet and curls into the fetal position, the hall monitor, Hesse, a large guy classified as tall-dark-and-handsome at 21 years old, busts into the fight and lifts the much lighter and less physically inclined Zach clean off the English hallway floor.
Mrs. Scwarinski decides to help by jumping in and grabbing Derik’s jersey collar and pulling him up off the floor.
“Back to your classes now!” Hesse *the bouncer* orders the fifty or so students who had accumulated in the few seconds that had started Brittany’s day off to a *smashing* day.
The students drift away from their places and back to their class rooms, knowing all to well that there wouldn’t be any learning getting done for all of first hour. Aurora knew that by the end of first period, the entire school would know of the first fight for gay rights.
She tosses another look around the thinning masses and when she doesn’t see any familiar faces, Aurora turns and heads back to her teacherless speech class. She slides into her desk and joins into the conversation the started a revolution.

The bell rings, causing a wave of surprise through the class of Juniors, and marked the end of first hour. Aurora climbs out of her desk and throws her black purse over her shoulder and follows her class out into the hallway. Immediately, exaggerated versions of the fight, cascade down the hall, spreading the gossip to even the most remote areas.
Aurora shakes her head in disgust, but doesn’t say anything. She turns right and turns the corner to head for geometry, but passes it to head towards her girl’s locker. Gabby doesn’t notice as Aurora strides up to her locker and slams it shut. She jumps back to avoid being hit, and runs into some football player that she hadn’t gotten their number yet.
She smiles flirtatiously at football player number 31 and turns reluctantly back to Gabby, who has already reopened her locker. Aurora leans up against her neighboring lockers and watches the beautiful blonde retrieve her books. Gabby realizes that she’s staring at her (again) and smiles while crossing her eyes and sticking out her tongue.
“Ditz.” She playfully shoves her Gabby and grabs the Black Notebook from the top shelf.
“Don’t forget to keep all the notes that go between you two.” She throws her coat in the locker and shuts it, but when it didn’t shut all the way, she turns and kicks it viciously.
“Jeeze! Having a bad day, Gabbs?” she laughs as they walk to Gabby’s class.
“Naw, it’s just Valencia. Again.” Valencia is the football player number 69, and just happens to be the most “arrogant, egotistic, cocky jerk”(her and Gabby’s nickname for him) she had ever met. However, her friend thought he was the most wonderful guy ever, too. Aurora just couldn’t figure it out.
“Again?” she rolls her eyes sarcastically. “What’s his problem now? Did his girlfriends realize what a loser he is? Finally.” She mumbles under her breath and turns her head to prevent from being heard. They round the corner once again and they finally reach they destination: Algebra 2.
They share a quick hug and then Gabby is left to learn something useless. Aurora retraces her steps through the still sardine-cramped hallway, and with six minutes in between classes, she had nothing to worry about. She steps through the door with three minutes to spare and passes the preps, the all-star girls, and the jocks until she reaches the other side of her Geometry class.
She finds most of the “High-school Hotties” all ready at their desks, and she moves to jump in to hers, when the leader of the pack, Aaron Johnson, steps in front of her. She smiles and follows their usual every-other day routine: double Pound-It, one Give-It-Some-Skin, lock fingers, Gang-banger Ur Under Arrest (Chicago style hug where you pound each other on the back), and a quick kiss on the cheek.
Once they’re done, Aaron grabs her hand and pulls her to her seat. Aurora takes a moment to Pound-It with each of the others, ending with Justin Alexander. She turns sideways and leans against the heater to face the rest of the “High-school Hotties”, but never takes her eyes of Aaron. She studies every thing she loved about him from his short blonde hair and his baby blue eyes; she even loved the single silver ring in his left ear. His style was simple yet it drove the All Star girls crazy, and made the jocks jealous.
But Aaron didn’t care for any of them, he just preferred to chase what he couldn’t get: her. He didn’t want her as his girlfriend, ‘cause they were already dating, he wanted something she couldn’t give him… And it wasn’t that she didn’t want to, it was more or less that she couldn’t.
All of a sudden she realizes that Aaron, Justin, and Mike were arguing with Kyle and Dom (Dominick) over who would take her to Homecoming, and by the looks of things, Dom was winning. Dominick was one of those Drop-Dead Hotties that’s also classified as tall-dark-and-handsome, with his black Nick Carter hairstyle with blonde tips and nearly pure black eyes that mesmerized her every time he looked at her.
Dom suddenly turns his attention away from his Kindergarten enemy and to the girl he’d been chasing for over a month. She couldn’t figure why the guys liked her. She was kind of odd, and never followed any one else’s fashion, but rather started her own. She got the entire school psyched on her trends, like wearing a skirt over pants and two T’s. Her choice for the day was a black wrap skirt with a large silver belt, high heel black boots, and a white and black tee that says “Baby Girl” across the chest. Hoop earrings and a choker dog collar seem to set the outfit of beat, sending ripples through every guy.
She watches as his gaze sweeps over her and shivers run down her back when Aaron softly touches her shoulder. Blinking her gaze to her boyfriend, she finds that the entire class had been waiting for her to say something. Aurora opens her mouth to say some thing when her teacher drops his book on his podium.
“Take out your book, please, and turn to 243.” Mr. Williams doesn’t even look up from his book as everyone follows the instructions. As she starts to flip through the pages of her Geometry book, she feels Aaron slide a note around her side and drop it in her lap. Quickly checking Mr. Williams, Aurora grabs the note, and unfolds it in her lap.
‘I luv u Aurora …’ was scribbled on the loose-leaf paper in Aaron’s messy handwriting. She sighs sadly and grabs her purse from under her chair. Mr. Williams draws a rectangle on the marker board and begins to mark off angles and parallel lines as Aurora replies.
She stealthily hands the paper back to her former boyfriend. She hears him gasp and crumple up the paper note, and watches as he hurls it at Dom. He whirls around and looks at Aaron then at Aurora. He looks confused then as he pieces their looks together, revelation dawns on his handsome face. She motions for him to pick up the note and waits. She tries to focus on her class work but her mind wanders back and forth between shapes and Dominick.
Aurora jumps when the note lands with a thud on her desk and snaps her attention back to the classroom. She unfolds the paper ball and smiles happily, for this is what she read:

‘I luv u Aurora …
‘Sorry Aaron…but…not any more. We’re through. Could we still be friends?
‘U Mother F****** A**H***!!!! #$&@! UR gonna die Jock!
‘Aurora …will u be mine? - Dom

She looks over at the Dominick and his # 49 football jersey and smiles her answer. He smiles brightly with happiness and they both return their attention to geometry for the remainder of the class.

“Hey Aurora!” Gabby walks into the locker room just as Aurora opens her locker and wraps her arms around her shoulders. “Sooo…what happened in Geometry?” she smiles eagerly, but the smile vanishes when she finds out that Aurora broke up with Aaron. “Why?!?!” Gabby turns to her own locker and puts in the combination.
Aurora begins to relate to her the whole story while they strip and dress in their Minooka Indian P.E. uniform (black sports shorts and a gray t-shirt, both adorning the Minooka Indian logo) and on the way to the small gym. As they walk into the gym, another Junior, Jon Cassidy, a particularly annoying, but cute, guy, joins them. He, among the many students in the “small” suburb school, has set his own ID.
Jon is mostly known for his odd talent in sound effect and for his two different color eyes (actually he just wears one blue colored contact over his originally beautiful green eyes). But a few know him for his clumsiness with his girlfriends…
(Remembering two weeks before)-*They had noticed the bright pink cast the second they met Jon in the gym, and naturally, Gabby was the first to say something.
“Oh my f****** God, Jon! What did you do this time?” she looked at Aurora who held her hand over her mouth to suppress her laughter. Gabby did the same, but got worse results then Aurora …they both burst out laughing hysterically.
Jon shrugged it off, and put his left hand (his one hand that wasn’t wrapped in pink) on his “hip” and waited for the girls to chill. They both stood back up from where they had fallen from laughter. Once they had calmed a bit, the three of them continue to the line-up and Jon begins to tell his story in a quiet whisper:
“Well I was at home with Misty, my girlfriend, ok? So my parents weren’t there, ‘cause they were still in California, and she was helpin’ me clean out my closet. My mom stores all the wrapping paper in my closet and so Misty found the clear blue kind, ya know, the stuff that looks like Saran Wrap.
“Well, anyways, she figured that it looked like fun…so…she wrapped me up, naked, in the blue plastic wrap and I gotta say, it felt kinda weird. So, she wrapped me up from my chest to my feet, leaving my arms out to…”
“Don’t wanna know!” Gabby shouted in a small whisper to not attract attention.
“No kidding! TMI! (Too Much Info.)” Aurora chimed in with her.
“Any ways,” he continued after checking to see where their young teacher, Coach Boe, was patrolling. “Well, she lays down on my bed and pulls me down on top of her, and since I didn’t want to squish her, I put my arms out to catch my self…” he trails off when he notices Mando, a mixture of Indian and Mexican, standing behind him, ease dropping on the interesting story, again.
“Don’t mind me. Please, do continue.” Mando smiles his frightening smile and waits to hear the story.
Jon rolls his eyes and starts his story again. “Well, when I hit the bed, my arm snaps in half from the shock of the fall…” he looks at the ground, ashamed of what happened. “It took us an hour and a half to get the plastic off, and get me to the hospital with out a shirt ‘cause it hurt too much to try and get one on. Oh, and by the way, the doctors, the nurses, and my parents loved the whole “scenario”. Yeah they loved it so much, that they rushed back on the next flight and took my car.”
“Well, good! I would have too!” Aurora glances at each of the people in the group for a dramatic pause. “I would be afraid his girlfriend would get the sick notion to try that in the car!” Instantly everyone started laughing at Jon, who by now was stripped of any self-pride and dignity he had left from his little adventure.
“We’re just messin’ with ya Jon! We still love ya!” Gabby came around and wrapped her arms around his shoulder in a friendly hug. Jon smiled at the simple comfort and then…
“You and your blue Saran Wrap!” Aurora adds as she wrapped her arms around him, and again, more laughter erupted from her pun. Jon joins in with the group and laughs away the embarrassment. *
Aurora chuckles as she recalls the incident and looks over to Jon’s cast and sees her signature right away. The three made their way to the Outdoor Ed’s equipment and to where the rest of the class was huddled. Aurora searched for the size five helmets and finally found it in the blue garbage can next to the true Hollywood Hillbilly, Keith Cook.
She walked over and grabbed the helmet, pretending to have not seen him, and proceeds to put it on. Keith ignores her and continues to chat with Nick Dersey. Aurora takes a quick glance at Cook and smiles to herself. He was a rather tall senior with chocolate eyes and dark brown hair in a semi-bowl cut. She notices that he’s not dressed in his uniform, but rather in his baggy faded jeans and his orange and black Minooka Football jersey. He also wore his red and white Phat Farms (they’re a popular brand of shoes among the wealthy teens because of their high price of up to $350!) and his usual silver chain.
“Aurora?” She turns to find Gabby directly behind her. “Here’s your harness.” Gabby hands her a teal climbing harness and she quickly slips it over her shorts and fastens it around her waist. Following Gabby to the ropes attached to the rock wall, Aurora notices that Boe is starting to help those who need it, by fastening them to the ropes.
Gabby attaches the belay to the front of her harness and pulls the rope through so it moved easily around the pulley. Aurora and Jon both hook A-clips to the front of their harnesses, and Jon attaches the anchor rope from the back of Gabby’s harness on to his A-clip. Jon sits as Aurora hooks herself to the climbing rope.
First she ties a figure eight knot six feet from the end of the climbing rope and tightens it. She brings the end through her A-clip and traces the first figure eight to make it a double. Making sure that she doesn’t over lap any of her moves, Aurora rechecks her work and then calls for Boe to give the OK to climb.
The track that they were on was the toughest track on the wall. It went up straight for about fifteen feet then left the wall in a ninety-degree angle to make a Hangman’s cliff. It continues out for two feet then turns back upward for the next twenty feet to the ceiling.
Aurora gazes at the obstacle and smiles nervously. She looks to Boe for the signal, and as soon as he catches her eye, he loudly yells “Sound-off!” Since they were the first ready, Boe decided to use their group as an example.
Gabby: “Belayer ready.”
Jon: “Anchor ready.”
Aurora: “Climber ready.”
Gabby: “Belaying.”
Aurora: “Climbing.”
Gabby: “Climb on.”
Aurora: “Climbing on.” With the standard procedures finally done, Aurora started to climb the difficult wall. Focusing all her mind to her task, she quickly and easily made it up the first fifteen feet but when she hit the “cliff” she also hit a snag. She carefully placed her feet so that she got the most support with the least strain on her arms. When she got that accomplished, Aurora grabbed onto the first foothold on the upper deck. She paused a moment to regain her stability, then continued her slow progress.
“Just come down! Hillbillies can’t do city sports!” Aurora knew where the sarcastic remark had come from with out even looking. Cook’s remark, which usually would have received a mass of laughter, now got anger thrust in his face. She smiled at the small assurance that helped boost her self-esteem.
Moving her right hand from the lower deck to the upper, she found it much easier to proceed…for a moment. She moved her feet to where her hands where just moments before and changed her handholds once again. She felt proud of herself for getting as far as she had, then realized what kind of situation she was in. Her body was at the impossible angle of forty-five degrees and her hands were slipping from the sturdy artificial “rocks”.
“Aurora Maour’s gonna fall, gonna fall, gonna fall. Make her self look like a clown, all day la-ong!’
Ignoring Cook, and making a quick decision, Aurora swung her right foot to the first foothold on the upper deck. After her foot was situated, she moved first her right hand and then her left to move only a few inches higher. Once she was sure she would stay put, she lifted her left foot off the lower deck and on to the next vertical wall.
Applause erupted from the class when her foot settled onto the footrest, and she smiles against the rough surface at her won battle. She looks up at the rest of her track and starts the journey upward. Her arms cried in protest at the strain she had already put on them, and as she began to climb once again, they burst in to a frenzy of crippling pain.
She tries to ignore the pain but she slowly felt herself loosing her purchase. Desperately threw her arms up to the next rock, but what ever she tried, exhaustion threatened to throw her back to the beginning.
“Come on Aurora, you can do it!” Gabby’s honeyed voice washes over her like a bucket of refreshingly cool water, and once again, she continues up. Even though her arms were killing her, Aurora easily makes it to the ceiling. However, her trial didn’t stop there.
Boe walked over to Gabby and whispers to her a moment, then he turns to the rest of the class. “Once you have reached this point in your climb, the next step is to come down. Now after Aurora’s splendid performance, we are not going to make her climb down.” Boe’s echoed through the gym and made him seem more ominous. “So, when you are ready to re join us, just let us know.” Everyone that wasn’t already looking, was now.
Hooking her arms over the ceiling supports to relieve some of the strain on her forearm. “Actually I think I like it up here.” Smiling to mask the waves of pain, Aurora screamed out to herself ‘Just get me down already!!!’
“I’m sure you would but other people would like the chance to climb.” He smiles up at the exhausted teen. “Alright, Belayers. This is where you come in. If you look at your Belays, you will find this handle.” Boe holds up his example Belay and points to a black rubber coated handle. “What you want to do is move the handle all the way around until it clicks. This will enable the climber to release their death grip on the wall, and not plummet to their certain death.” He backs away but watches as Gabby does as instructed.
When she’s finished, she calls out: “Belayer ready.”
Aurora: “Faller ready.”
Gabby: “Fall on.”
Aurora: “Falling on.” She gulps as she watches herself smash on the wooden floor below her. She shakes the image out of her mind and makes a silent prayer. She closes her eyes and lets go of the supports. She braces her self against the wall and waits for the impact. When it doesn’t come, she sighs and relaxes for the short ride to the ground.
Once she is back on the Gym floor, Aurora disconnects herself from the climbing rope and switches places with Jon, who becomes the Belayer. She pulls the anchor rope through her A-clip and sits on the floor. When Jon is situated and Gabby is checked for the OK, they start the routine.
Jon: “Belayer ready.”
Aurora: “Anchor ready.”
Gabby: “Climber ready.”
Jon: “Belaying.”
Gabby: “Climbing.”
Jon: “Climb on.”
Gabby: “Climbing on.” As Gabby reaches the *cliff*, Aurora pulls out the disposable camera she had bought before school from Aaron. He was doing his usual sale of Squares and just happened to have a camera on him.
“Hey, Gabby!” Aurora shouts up to her struggling friend. She grabs on to the wall to secure herself then turns and gives her an innocent smile. After snapping a quick picture, Gabby returns to her mission and Aurora just sits on the floor watching her girl climb.

The hall way fills quickly with students as some head for D lunch, the last lunch period, and the best lunch, for the lunch ladies carefully measure out the food through the first three, to make sure there’s enough to feed the D lunch students. However, there always ends up being extra, to avoid wasting any, they pile the food up.
For a school with almost five thousand students, they need a rather large lunchroom, and since they have a strange name for everything else, they call this the cafetorium. The cafetorium is a basically an enormous half circle completely encased in glass. It holds approximately two thousand people easily and still has room for a large all stone performance stage. The stage is used for all kinds of purposes, the most common is student bands. Not the school marching band, but private bands.
Aurora and Gabby stride through the glass tunnel into the cafetorium and follow the windows. There are three sets of tables: the high tops (high tables that can seat up to four with trays), the outer low tops (single row of regular height tables that sit along the windows), and the inner low tops (same as the outer low tops except they fill the rest to the cafetorium). Their usual table was the last of the outer low tops, which sits next to the teacher’s lunch area. The teachers lunch area is a room that follows the curve of the cafetorium, is about two class rooms in size, and the only thing separating the teachers from the rest of the *student body* is a single layer of frosted glass.
To the left of the teachers lunchroom, are the four different food lines: Pizzahut, Subway, McDonalds, and School Plates. Each line is separated by clear glass and each have a different selection of Candy Bars (shelves of candy, not like the chocolate bars).
After they toss their books onto their table, Gabby and Aurora catch up with Jon Cassidy and VJ (his real name is Verinissent Jomerinto, he’s Czechoslovakian), and head for the McD’s line and grab a tray.
“You guys got Squares?” some senior glides up next to them and smiles at the girls. Being completely clad in black leather, and a pink mohawk, Aurora concluded that he was part of the Nation of the Jackals, or the group of constantly high Goth-Wannabe’s.
“Naw, we ain’t got Squares. Try with Aaron Johnson, he’s a dealer.” Jon Dempsey says sarcastically as he strides up to her side. Squares are a fairly new product, made specifically for in-school users. They’re thin strips of Ice, made to look like the Listerine Breath Strips, and fit nicely in their packs. However, they cost much more then the Breath Strips. Running at one grand a pack, and a hundred a pop (pop=dose or high).
The senior slinks away to the drug lord’s High Top table, and the small band of lunch starved teens laugh at the intrusion. As the line moves along, Aurora grabs a double cheeseburger, a small fries, and a chocolate shake. She piles the food onto her brown tray and proceeds to the checkout.
“Three fifteen, please.” The middle-aged checkout clerk announces as Aurora pulls out her black and baby blue wallet. She hands four dollars to the dark haired lady and waits for her change. After she gets her whole eighty-five cents back, Aurora carries her tray to the accessory table. Pouring catsup directly onto her tray, She notices that there is a group of All Star Girls sitting at her table.
“Hey. Guys!” Aurora snaps at the rest of her gang. They all turn their attention to her and see the expression that started many things with many people. They all smile and stride over to where she was and saw what she was “excited” about.
“I say, that is mighty rude of them.” Gabby says sarcastically. “Should we go over there ‘n’ nicely ask them to move?” she smiles innocently. With out even answering the question, the group knew what the answer would be.
The five of them carry their trays around the tables and stride up to the group of Junior and senior snobs, which happened to be mostly cheerleaders. Halfway to their table, they are joined by Matt Gresser and Nathan Kennedy. Gresser is a trueborn redneck, from his NASCAR caps to his over all look of Blue eyes and short brown hair in the typical male cut. Being a bit shorter than Aurora, Matt had a tendency of wearing thick-soled boots with his rebel leather jacket.
Nathan however, is the opposite. He is in his usual style: a black leather trench coat, army boots, and The Terminator version sun glasses. He is also taller than Gresser by several inches and happens to be the skinniest punk she had ever met.
When Aurora finally reaches her table the rest of her friends fall into step around her making them seem a lot more ominous than they really are. As the last of them file into place, the lunchrooms usual clatter dies down to a few scattered whispers.
Each of the All Star’s sit reclined in the bare back plastic chairs and scan the troop nonchalantly, until a bright blonde in her black and orange Minooka cheerleading uniform stands up and faces Aurora with a challenging stare. She has her rich honey colored hair pulled back into a tight ponytail and is decorated with strips of black, orange, and white ribbon, and just enough light make-up to make her childlike. The two girls stare off for a few moments, and then the cheerleader crosses her arms in a girlish pout.
“I hear you’re with Dom…” she trails off to emphasize her statement. Glancing around the lunchroom with artistic precision, she manages to start up a series of chain reaction conversations that would not stop at the school doors.
So much for being quiet couple. “Well, if that’s what you hear…” Aurora trails off to mock the jock, then smiles sarcastically. “Then it must be true.”
The lunchroom erupts in astonished gasps as the cheerleader remains unaffected, or seems to be calm except the annoyed twitch of her jaw muscle. She holds the less popular girls gaze with her haunting gray eyes then surprises her by grabbing her purse off the table. The rest of the A Squad follows her example and begin to clear out, until the blonde turns to face her with a genuine smile lifting the corners of her perfect pouty lips.
“If it’s ‘ight with Dom…then it’s ‘ight with me.” She says to the confused Aurora. “Besides, I heard you were a good person to have as a friend. Real puedo ir al bano.” She winks at her, completely not knowing that “puedo ir al bano” means “may I go to the bathroom”, yet she didn’t say anything to the A Squad captain. She was going to let the girl have her fifteen minutes of fame.
“Yeah.” Aurora shakes the image of the cheerleader holding a bathroom model out of her mind then looks over the group. “Sure.” The blonde cheerleader wraps her slender arms around Auroras shoulder in a tender hug, and smiles affectionately. The A Squad then turns on their heals and head out the lunchroom so that her hair bounces as she walks.
They are left standing in the center of the walkway, gawking after the All Stars. Aurora smiles and laughs at the idea that she could possibly be popular. Shaking her head one last time, she walks around the table and picks a chair in front of the window and slides in to it. Gladly placing her tray on the table, she starts to enjoy her cooling food then notices that the entire congregation was still staring-gawking at her for an explanation.
Aurora laughs and each of her six friends slowly take their places around the table. Aurora starts to tell the tale of second hour, with the help of Gabby, and what just happened. Although she didn’t understand what it was for, or why they did it, Aurora felt unusually ecstatic about the whole ordeal. She thought about the occurrences of the still young day while she slurped down the thick chocolate shake.

Even though the bell rang at it’s usual time to dismiss D lunch, Aurora jumps out of her seat when she comes crashing back to reality from her daze. She yawns and stretches to wake up, then realizes that the lunchroom is already empty. She finds this small fact rather odd, but continues on her way. She dumps her tray on one of the carts and plans an entire tantrum she’s going to throw to get back at her friends for ditching her.
As she walks to the other side of the Cafetorium, she notices something hiding behind a high top next to the stage. Aurora tilts her head and ponders what the bundle of black is when a low moaning sound glides across the linoleum floor from the object. Dropping her books in a heartbeat, she races to help whoever was lying on the floor.
As she kneels down to help the poor guy, she finds a total absence of skin on his thin wrists. She gasps for air as the atmosphere begins to crush down on her. She falls to the floor and screams when she finds the face of the stranger. A hollow white mask peers out from under the folds of the heavy black fabric. He gazes at her with empty eye sockets and reaches his hand out to grasp her throat with his ghastly grip.
She opens her mouth to scream but nothing comes out but a strangled ‘help’. The thing laughs cruelly at her and Aurora watches horrified as it opens its mouth to scream. A horrible sound echoes through the cafetorium as the beast shakes her already limp body.
“Aurora…Aurora…” ‘That…voice…’ she fought desperately to hold on to life, when abruptly she’s sitting in her seat at the lunch table again with each of her friends gathered around her all in a panic.
“Hun, it’s time to go.” Gabby kneeled next to her with a clear look of concern on her beautiful face. “We can’t miss Wendlick’s class, or it will be the devil to pay.” She grabs on to Auroras hand and pulls her to her feet but has trouble keeping her there. Aurora’s head reeled after her dream and was causing her feel nauseous.
Some how they make their way through the crowd after they get their friend to her feet and her purse on her back. As they stride swiftly along the lunchroom walkway, Aurora glances at the table where the devil had lain, seemingly helpless.
“Are you…did you guys feel something just like two minutes ago?” she stares confused at the table and tilted her head, considering weather or not to explain.
“Only the violent shudders of your snoring!” VJ shoves her playfully, causing her head to whip to the side. When she recovers, she runs and jumps onto the tall Czechs back, and he runs down the hall caring the now carefree teen, who laughs excitedly as they both fly down the hall to fourth hour.
They turn right down the Social Studies wing and each person drifts off until it’s just Gabby and Aurora. The fourth door on the left is their American History with the 37 year-old Mr. Wendlick, and when they stride elegantly through the door, they find Mando and Matt Gresser already situated. The two girls smile simultaneously and head directly for their usual desks, the last two in the second row from the far wall. Matt Gresser occupies the corner desk, the farthest one from the door and teachers desk, and in front of him is his new girlfriend, Shelly Breck, one of the High-School Hotties that never ended up high.
To the right of Shelly is where Gabby typically sits to be right in the middle of the notes. Aurora sits behind her with Mando to her right and this is their usual set up so it makes it easier to pass and receive notes, not that they had to conceal them, because Wendlick is a not big Kill-joy, and lets them do whatever they want.
“What about those Packers, huh?” Gabby sneers at the huge packer fan as she slides into her seat. Matt glares at her not wanting to listen to her criticizing the Packers loss of 54 to 23. Aurora senses another fight coming on and posesivly wraps her arm around the now fuming teens neck.
“Just ‘cause the Packers s***, and have no talent except getting’ people hooked on cheese, doesn’t mean you have to pick on our Teddy Bear, hun.” Aurora smiles in a pouting fashion at Gabby, but jumps away from Matt when Mando sneaks up behind her and tickles her side mercilessly.
They get into a childish tickle fight when the bell rings. They all drift to their seats, still passing out playful looks. Instantly, each person grabs a notebook and begins jotting anything and everything that could be written with out a detention. Aurora writes the first thing that could come to mind, then passes it to Gabby. After shipping her own note out, she pulls her red American History book out of her stack of books and flips through to page 532, the Civil War.

Standing out side, Aurora notices that the wind is gone and is replaced with a rather pleasant zephyr. The sun slowly dries the rain from the previous night and the buses splash furiously through the remaining puddles as they pull into the circle drive. She turns to the radiant girl standing on her left.
“See ya tomorrow, Gabbs.” She wraps her arms around the Blonde and givers her a heartfelt hug.
“Yeah, tomorrow. Bye, Aurora.” Gabby pulls away first and runs off for her bus. Slowly Aurora makes her way onto bus number 49 and jumps into the back seat. Gazing thoughtfully out the bus window, she smiles to herself and flips her hair behind her shoulder.
The bus rumbles to life as the last few students stroll across the sidewalk to their different rides, and pulls slowly out of the circle drive. Spotting several of her friends, Aurora sighs unhappily and makes a silent oath. I WILL get a car! I will not ride the bus forever! She agrees to her personal goal and blinks hurriedly to hide the eyes from the receding sun’s glare.

CHAPTER TWO

The setting sun casts a radiant orange glow across the hard word floor, illuminating the soft yellow down comforter draped over the wood bed in the far corner. Aurora sat studiously at her desk beside the bed, coping math problems into her blue spiral notebook. Bees buzzed harmoniously out side of her window marking the peak of summer but the end of the day.
Assorted songs by Eminem blare through her headphones sending her hands into a rhythm. With each beat of the song Mocking Bird, she wrote another number. She kept at her homework for a good while, going from Algebra to English, and then finally finishing with her Ars Poetica. Checking the clock, Aurora removes her headphones and rubs her tender ears. She opens her left hand side drawer and sets the portable CD player in along side a darker-than-night velvet bag with a silver drawstring.
She stares at the sack, and all at once her attention comes crashing back to earth. Shaking her head, Aurora climbs out of her plain wooden desk chair and walks to her door. Turning back to her room, she smiles at her accumulated posters of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Eminem and mass collection of teddy bears. Quickly assessing her looks in her mirror, Aurora turns the brass door handle and heads downstairs for supper.

              ﻵ

Darkness flows fluidly, covering the furniture of the small child’s bedroom. A small girl lies peacefully on a solitary bed standing out from the wall facing the window. The light from the bar next to the house, casts an orange glow on the girls pale feet jutting out from under the Little Mermaid sleeping bag she had just gotten for her fourth birthday. She had opened her window earlier that night to try and ease the stifling heat in her room, and still stood open, allowing the night’s cooling air and sounds to sooth the heat and other problems.
The young girl shifts slightly in her sleep and disrupts her blanket, sending it onto the wood floor in a rumpled heap. As the room turns back to its silent state, a single shadow glides across the young girl’s limp body. The dark figure reaches to retrieve the lost blanket on the floor, but pauses when the child wiggles around in her sleep again. He glances at the child then back to the blanket, and pulls it up to place it on the edge of the bed, but is startled to find the child now sat up on her bed staring worriedly at him.

Though she was awake, it took her several seconds to understand what was going on. She had woken from a dream telling her that something was happening and she was needed in the real world. So she had snapped back to her body, making her jolt back to find a man kneeling beside her bed. She went to clutch her blanket around her for protection, but was concerned to find that it had slipped from her bed.
As she turned her attention back to the dark form crouching beside her, she swallows harshly when he lifts his dark eyes to meet hers. Her heart slows back to a relieved pace when she recognizes the man. He stands up, folds her blanket in to a neat rectangle, and slides it over the end of her bed.
Smiling, the young girl slips back down to her pillow to return to sleep, and to welcome back her dreams.
“Scream, child, scream…” had been the dark ones words in her dream, and dumped over her like a bucket of ice water. She sits back up and chokes on a scream when a hand tosses her back down on her bed and clamps down on her mouth.
“Shhhh…you don’t want to wake your mommy…do you, Aurora?” he breathes thickly as his hand presses down roughly on her mouth, halting any sounds. The small girl’s heart thuds frantically in panic and instantly she starts flailing her arms and feet, trying to dislodge the heavy man, which now straddled her. He quickly stops her futile attempts by shifting his weight and using his free hand to pin her arms above her head.
Certain that she wouldn’t make a sound, his hand slide eagerly from her mouth to remove her cartoon pajama bottoms. Fear filled tears stream fluently from her slate colored eyes as her pants slid off her small legs and were tossed to the floor hurriedly. She squeezes her eyes closed to shut out the world, but opens her eyes when the heavy weigh on her chest moves off. She looks up to find him standing next to her looking down.
She follows his gaze and notices a silk scarf in his right hand. Be fore she has a chance to understand his intentions, he has her body straddled again, but instead of holding her hands, he quickly wraps the scarf around her thin wrist and ties them together above her head to the white metal head board.
She tugs fruitlessly at her bonds when he slides off her small body to the end of her bed, but stops she stops moving as a large hand slides across her bare stomach. Fresh tears run helplessly down her pale face, silently begging him to stop. His hand traces the contour of her waist and hips, circling his intent. He moves his hand lower still, making her finally cry out in pain.

She lay still for most of the night, trying desperately to understand her frightening dream in the darkness of her room. Aurora tries to focus on the details, but sighs impatiently when it melts together in a misty haze. The rhythmic breathing of her younger sister, told Aurora that she still lay sound asleep in her bed across their spacious bedroom, so she decided to go on an outing. She silently pulls back her covers and climbed from her bed onto the heated wood floor. Pulling on a pair of faded flare jeans and black sweatshirt over her camouflage nightshirt, Aurora readied herself for the bitter night air.
Glancing again at her sister to be sure she was safe, the teenage girl slowly gets on her knees to retrieve her small navy blue duffel bag out from under her bed. Nearly five months ago, she had packed the bag with food and extra clothes when she had gotten a sudden urge to travel their woods to the beautiful lake almost a mile and a half away. The urge came as a pulling sensation always on the full moon, just before it hit the night’s peek.
So she retraced her set pattern of attaining her bag and the small black velvet bag from her desk, and climbs from her window, after tossing her bag to the ground. She picked up her back and slings it over her shoulder. Being especially wary of the loose rocks surrounding her families’ two story log home, Aurora makes her way slowly to the edge of the distant woods.
The ancient oaks that filled her family’s 112-acre Michigan property loomed reverently over her, seeming almost to embrace their young friend. Smiling joyfully, Aurora sweeps back her jet-black hair and crosses from her routine life of being her father’s daughter, in to her enchanted fantasy.
Early spring leaves spin in the slight May zephyr, creating some of the loveliest designs in the night sky. The newly grown grass sprinkles the ground with new life color and softens the forest floor. Aurora gently sets her backpack down to retie her out door shoes, and inhales the sweet scent of coming rain and fragrant flowers before kneeling to the soft earth.
Her long hair shimmers in the bright moon, reflecting the light so that it almost seems blue. Flowing to her lower back, it created a dramatic waterfall of black trailing the smooth line of her back. Crickets greet the rising moon with their mournful song as she finishes her shoes and stands to head for the woods. Taking in the sight of the shadowed trees once more, Aurora sighs and tosses the duffel bag back on her back and steps in to the darkness.

Leaves crunched under her sneakers as she crosses over the small wooden bridge her father build over the small stream branching off of the lake. A slight breeze stirs some dead leaves around the end of the bridge, which would have frightened her, if it hadn’t occurred every night she’s come here. Treading softly on the wooden bridge, Aurora spots the reflection of the moon on the calm waters of the Maour Family Lake.
Stepping out of the darkness of the trees, and taking in the striking beauty of the lake, Aurora strides happily to her canoe tied to the trunk of a willow. Undoing the figure-eight knot on her boat, she carefully wraps the rope around the front end of the canoe and drags it to the shore. The water laps quietly at the bottom of the boat as she pushes it from the bank, and over the calm waters.
The red metal paddle dips silently into the water to push the small boat across the surface to the reflection of the moon. She lifts the paddle out of the water and moves it to the other side of the canoe, slowly moving her closer to her destination.
The larger white disk slowly surrounds the boat as she glides to the center of the lake. Quickly reversing her paddles to stop her from leaving the ring of light, Aurora slowly stops moving and drops anchor. After wiping off the water that was splashed on her face from the anchor, Aurora carefully pulls her duffel bag out from the storage compartment in the back of the canoe. Opening the blue bag, she pulls out the soft black velvet sack.
Feeling the object in the sack, Aurora smiles and slowly unties the silver cord. She slowly draws open the sack. Turning it over, a small ebon stone orb rolls into her palm. Strung on a silver chain by a single braided silver tread that crosses the orb tightly, necklace seemed kind of surreal.
Carefully unfastening the silver chain, Aurora happily puts the necklace around her neck. She then pulls a rainbow fleece blanket out of the duffel and a small pillow to sleep under the stars. Watching the moon drift across the sky, her green eyes slowly close to welcome sleep at last.

              ﻵ

Cold water trickles down her pale face, splashing against her chest. Her clothes stick to her body and bring the chill closer still. The moon is gone from the sky and the stars light barely anything at all. She lies in the bottom of the boat, her green eyes filled with excitement, but her body trembles as though she’s run for days on end.
The water around the boat sloshes noisily against the metal, pounding rhythmically to a hidden beat. She focuses on a single thought in her mind and shut out the rest of the world. Birds sing softly with the beat, a whole new rhythm starts from the mixture. Her heart picks up the beat and skips abnormally, causing her to breathe irregularly.
The boat stops rocking. The lake stops surging. The birds stop chirping. Her heart stops beating.
A single figure steps out from the shadows of the tall oaks, and crosses the sand and rocks to the edge of the water. The water has calmed to a glass like appearance, and has frozen to ice. The temperature drops dangerously around the stranger; a large icy cloud surrounds him, freezing all in his path. He steps on to the ice.
A single heart starts throbbing frantically to make up for the lost beats, and Aurora slowly sits up and screams. The ice around the boat thaws instantly and rocks the boat viciously. She tries to regain her balance but falls out of the canoe, into surprisingly warm water.
Ice forms over head as the stranger glides closer to her boat. The silence is broken as he chips away at the ice trying desperately to break through to her. Aurora swims towards the ice and places a shaky hand on its surface. Her touch melts the ice so that a hole the shape of her palm passes trough to the surface.
Screams echo through the water as a cold hand grips her wrist as it breaks through the ice. Trying to break away from the pain, Aurora finds the stranger starring down at her through the thick sheet of ice. The grip warms slightly as her heat passes through her and into him.
She gives up being released and places her entire body against the ice and shudders as the cold give way to the heat. She closes her eyes against the bitter cold and jumps as a strong arm wraps around her body and lifts her to her feet. The stranger continues to hold her in a vice like grip as she wobbles on her feet from exhaustion.
Aurora slowly lifts her free arm up to brush back the strangers hood, mystified by the darkness inside. As her finger tips trace the ancient silver runes adorning the edge of his hood, his hand releases her wrist. With both hands, she carefully draws back the black velvet hood to reveal charming, if not mischievous, black eyes and well defined facial features. Short black hair is plastered to his head from sweat and is contradictive to his creamy white skin.
Aurora traces the lines of his seemingly familiar face with her eyes, trying to drag up any familiar memories. A breeze tousles a few stray hairs as it tugs against his heavy robes. A shiver passes through her as the wind toys with her wet clothes and skin. Thinking of her wet state of being, Aurora moves to back away from the stranger, but frowns when she is stopped when his arm tightens around her waist.
“Who…” she swallows harshly and takes a deep breathe. A faint hint of fear creeps its way in to her already trembling voice. “Who are you?”
Memories flood into her mind in broken little shards…
A young woman slaps a small boy, hard across the face, sending her long auburn hair flipping through the air. The small boy falls to his knees letting go of a soft plea.
It switches to pair of children running through a forest holding hands. One is a small girl of no more than six years old dressed in a fine black gown. His waist length black hair is loosely braided and waves in the scattered sunlight as she races with a boy who seems a little older then her. Dressed in black pants and a loose fitted long sleeved white silk shirt, the two children looked well together.
Before she could catch more, the scene switched to him. The same dark enchanting eyes stare down at the sleeping body of a young woman of exceptional beauty. Her auburn hair spills about her in dark pools on the ebony alter. She wears a light blue dress adorned in silver, and a pendant around her neck with a beautifully crafted Ebon Stone set in a strange design…and then she notices her self.
Her own body lies on identical ebony alter next to the beautiful woman in a delicate black dress. A single ring is hung around her neck by a small silver chain. A single ring set with the same stone as the woman’s necklace. The same ring she now wore on her left pointer finger.
But even as she concentrated on herself the image changed and he walks out of the shadows of the tomb. Wrapped in midnight black robes, he stands over the alter with her body and removes the hood to reveal the gorgeous man who had been plaguing her for months. The man who had met her here at the lake, who froze the water with just a touch. He reaches out in the image to brush his fingertips lightly across her forehead and startles Aurora when he actually touches her.
Aurora jumps and upsets the boat sending herself in to the surprisingly mild lake water…
She desperately breaks the surface and looks around her for him and is disappointed to find only a moon sinking down over the trees. Aurora sighs and climbs back in to the small canoe. She lies in the bottom of the boat and sobs sadly.
“A name! that’s all I want!” she cries out to no one. She shivers uncontrollably as a slight breezes trails along her soaked body. Then she hears it. Just barely. “Daemon…I will find a way to help you…” she sit up in the boat and promises to the fading light.

Elvin Blood

Dark and quiet
She sits far below
Struck in the heart
Dying in the snow

Her long years
Have come up short
The deadly arrow
Shot from Ammort

Her Elvin blood
Spills on the cold
She shakes with pain
But tries to hold

He is exiled
But cares not
He means to kill her
And let her rot

He brings back the arrow
And releases a hateful grin
He let flies the arrow
But it never went in

He sees her stand
He screams with rage
She chants a spell
For she a Mage

Withering in pain
She tosses more flames
But he's seen again
As the story claims
