A Merry Fairy Christmas

Once, underneath a Christmas tree
Well shielded from the falling snow
There was for all the world to see
A small, bewinged fairy boy

But all the world was not outside
This dark and snowy winter night
And therefore they were all denied
The wonder of this foreign sight

He sat alone, beneath the pine
Enfolded in the merry lights
That with a fervour seemed to shine
From all the branches, pure and bright

Yes, fairy lights of every kind
Blue, green, red, white and yellow too
He loved the way they looked combined
But most of all he loved the blue

Blue like the lively mountain brook
That bubbled past his small abode
Blue like the little stone he took
He found it lying by the road

But most of all, the pure blue light
Reminded him of love and smiles
His sister's dress, his brother's kite
The warm glow of his mother's eyes

At once a yearning hit his heart
To see his family, once again
Three seasons now, they'd spent apart
For reasons that were quite inane

A fight that once had made him seethe
And leave his home with angered vows
Now simply made it hard to breathe
It all seemed unimportant now

Oh, how he longed to see them all!
To hug his mother long and hard
To see his father standing tall
And look at him with kind regard

He'd give the world, for just a day
To spend within their loving sphere
A day to talk, a day to play
With those that were his heart most dear

And as he sat there, all alone
He realised what he had to do
To throw out all the pride he owned
And go back home and start anew

And so the little fairy boy
Got to his feet and flew away
He did a little loop of joy
Just as he passed a Christmas sleigh

And in the sleigh, the people stared
They pointed at his bold display
But the little fairy didn't care:
He was going home for Christmas Day!
