APA Referencing & Paper Formatting

For all Wikis which use media from elsewhere!

<img:http://elftown.eu/stuff/eg_iy_divider1>

     "Oh dear lord, I'm the only one here" quoth [xido].   <img:44166_1164145147.gif>
     "I guess I will have to educate us all on APA Formatting."<img:44166_1164469631.gif>

     He reluctantly grabs the pointing stick, and points to the chalkboard, striking each letter as he says them,
     "A - P - A, stands for American Psychological Association. We can figure that this is a bunch of people, and which is most likely a big group of old geezer nitties who like to write about Psychology and such. They have been known to enjoy writing things, about things that other people write about, while writing things........  It's called Empirical Science. Anyways, that's a different damn wiki."  <img:44166_1164218111.gif>

     Moving around the front of the room, he continues, sighing heavily, "Since I came here thinking that someone wouldst be here, writing and wiki-...ing... and such, I figured I would find people had already been posting lots of informative things about how to cite references from the web and beyond, and I'd just step in and watch things, maybe help here or there.....  Instead I find a massive blank void of emptiness and doom on the page heretofore."

     "Hence: In the coming months, I will be posting how it is that we cite a reference in APA format, so that all of you - who art nits and are wondering, wandering or erstwhile lost on what we are even talking about - may perhaps grasp such a simplistic and legal-friendly subject as proclaiming someone else's rights to a writing, artwork, or media (just about any kind) while writing about it or even picturing or linking it on/from the web. What's better is that will be professional. How's that for a kick in the pants?"  <img:44166_1164557415.gif>

Referencing a Publication or Media

     First and foremost, to reference a work, you must do it in two ways:

   - In-Text Citations: for things like quoted verses and published material.
   - Bibliographic Citations: your bibliography or references list.

<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/stuff/eg_iy_divider1>

In-Text Citation

     A typical In-Text Citation looks like this:
   - (Last-Name, F., 2006)

     This format shows the last name first, first name second, and finally the year date of the work, publication or media.

     For more on In-Text Citations, please see the online resource:
     http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/p04_c09_s1.html

<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/stuff/eg_iy_divider1>

Bibliographic Citation

     A typical Bibliographic Citation looks like this:
   - References:

   Last-Name, F., & Second-Author, N., (2006). Title of the Work in Question. From A Great and Wonderful Printing
      Press, Flint, MI, 48532.

     This is simple, basic, generalized and might even get you in trouble with an APA-oriented instructor if you use it in the wrong context or with the wrong type of media or publication. Please check out the rest of the APA wiki page links for more detailed portions on each of those subjects.

Why do we Reference things?

     Which brings me to my major point in this class: Why do we reference things like this?

     BECAUSE if you didn't write that book, and you didn't make any of the artworks in it, and you post them on your house or wiki without even mentioning the website or URL (that means web address, kiddies) of the work, then you are stealing. It is on the legal books as PLAGIARISM. Please see Copyright and Intellectual Property for more on that, and I will stop ranting about it.

2006-12-10 [The Dizzy Raven]: I sure don't think there's another wiki like this...I've never run accrossed any and I'm everywhere for dragon wikis

2006-12-10 [xido]: It has to do with referencing and bibliographies of writing/media, and not just with dragons, but it is also important to making sure that Elftowners stay professional about the stuff they post around the town, and keep from plagiarising.
;)
I have a lot of work cut out for me... XP

2008-09-09 looney: what is apa form i m doing it for a class and have no idea wat it mean

2008-09-10 [xido]: APA Formatting is the referencing layout used by the APA, as well as some papers and in college, depending on the school and/or professor.

It is a simple system for documenting where you find information that you use. I made a simplified version here, and you can use it for most any form of media/writing used in your own papers. It makes sure that you're not cheating by saying where you read what you are writing about.

It is pretty much: Name (Last Name, and First & Middle Initials), (Date). Title. From Source (Details if in a magazine, publishing series, etc. - Issue, Volume, Page Numbers, etc.). (If online:) Retrieved on Date, from http://www.site.com.

Inside your writing, when you are using material that is not yours, right after it write in (Author, Date) like it is in your reference's beginning portion. See the examples I used here in the links, and do a Google search for APA Formatting if needed. There is a lot of information out there for it.
