Account of a HIM gig

NEWCASTLE - 25th October 2004

Arriving outside of the venue at 6pm, my friend and I joined the back, of an already extremely large queue. There was already a great atmosphere. We were outside and it had already turned dark but surprisingly it wasn't cold. More and more people started to turn up, and the queue grew longer, and weaved its way out of the university square, and onto the street, and carried on, so much so that we couldn't see the end. It was very slow moving, and the sound of music coming from the hall was making everyone even more excited. A group of people started screaming at the front of the line, and everyone thought that they had seen the band, but we were soon informed by someone who had been there, that they were just screaming for the hell of it. They continued for ages - and many people hurled abuse at them for being so fucking stupid.
The line was moving extremely slowly, and eventually at 7:30 they opened the doors. We finally got through at around 8. Two hours after we had joined the queue - and as we were going through the door, we could still couldn't see the end of the line. It was going to be great! The concert had sold out months ago!

Getting into the hall, the huge heartagram was in place at the back of the 'stage'. We found a place at the front - thanks to much pushing and elbowing of everyone. There was still one line of people at the bar, but we were right behind them, and it was close enough for me.
After about 20 minutes, the guest band Witchfinder came on, and played a few of their songs. They were good, but we were all waiting for HIM, and pretty much just wanted them to stop playing. They thanked us, and left the stage. After that, the long drawn out task of the roadies setting up HIM's equipment, took place. The longest moment of my life! Every time they came through the door, we could see glimpses of the band getting ready. It wasn't fair - they were back there, and we had to put up with waiting for ages! (Yes - I happen to be extremely impatient lol). During that time, everyone was trying to get closer, and by the time the band was ready to come on, it was physically impossible to move - even trying to stand on your toes was impossible! The good thing about it though, was that you could just lean backwards and not fall, because there was that much support around you! Lol.
After many chants of "HIM HIM HIM HIM!" They finally came out, and were greeted by a lot of screaming (no wonder I made my already sore throat even more shite >.<).
Now this would normally be the part, where I would say what the play list was, but to be perfectly honest, I can't remember - all I remember is that The Sacrament was third and that Soul on Fire was last.

Anyway... back to the gig. It was fucking amazing; everyone was moshing and singing along. But the heat was fucking unbearable! The bouncers were passing out ice cold bottle of water to everyone (saviors!). The best feeling was having one tipped over my head! (Ahhh....). I tried to take loads of picture; I don't know how many came out yet - there were lots of hands in the way for some of them!
Ville looked over several times, and made eye contact, I almost died - he was looking so damn fine! And so was Burton...
After about an hour, the heat was just too damn strong, and I almost passed out, so trying very hard, I worked my way from the front to the back of the room, and towards the bar. I just stayed there for ages, it was much cooler and the unlimited supply of ice cold free water was so tempting. I managed to get some photos of the stage and crowd as well, which (if they turn out), should be pretty good!
Ville was great - he was talking to the crowd, and made us all laugh when he was explaining the Newcastle origins of 'And Love Said No...' he even tried to do a Geordie accent, but bless him, he failed.
He then took a 'piss break', and i have to say, even though he looked amazing, he was starting to look a little ill. I made my way back to the front, and battled my way towards my friend, as Gas returned to the 'stage' and gave us a little solo on the drums. Ville, Burton, Linde and Mige retuned and played 'Soul on Fire' and then left... we were all standing around quite perplexed. Were they coming back on? Were they going to say 'thank you'? But the lights came on, and we were all asked to leave... it was a bit strange, but we all made our way slowly downstairs and bought some merchandise and then I dragged my friend around the back, where a small group of us were waiting for them to come out, and head for the bus.

After a while, I turned around and someone was getting an autograph from someone, looking a bit closer, I realized that it was Mige, so as he went past I asked for an autograph. He was really nice and agreed. Heading for the bus, he came back soon talking to his bodyguard saying something like "where the fuck is my bus". My friend got his autograph and I got a picture and shook his hand (I'm NEVER washing the glove that was on that hand!).

A little later, we saw a group getting autographs and realized that it was Linde and Burton. As I was waiting for an autograph from Linde (standing RIGHT next to him, may I add!), the doors opened and a trolley was being wheeled out - Linde's bodyguard grabbed me around the waist, saying "watch out", even though I swear it was no where near me. He managed to move me right into Linde, the poor guy. My friend was saying that as this was happening, Linde had an expression on his face that first said "should that bodyguard be doing that to that girl" (the bodyguard was standing right in front of me, and had his hands tight around my waist, and was holding me pretty close to him), but then when he saw the trolley, apparently his expression was more concerned and like "oh is she alright". Which made my day! Linde is so nice! He was so friendly! I got my ticket signed, and asked for a photo - he said yes, and said that he wanted to fix his hair first, so he brushed his dreds out of his face, and smiled really nice for the photo, and grinned when I (extremely ecstatically) said "thank you!".

As I moved to Burton to get an autograph, the bodyguard said that they better be moving off, because it was getting cold, and they didn't want them becoming ill. As I was trying to get an autograph Burton turned to me and apologized saying that he had to go, but I just looked at his and said "please... one little scribble... just one autograph! Please..." and he grinned and said okay. As I said thank you and smiled, he winked at me. (*is in heaven!*)

Ville and Gas weren't there, because they had apparently gone back to the hotel early, because Ville wasn't feeling well (bless him). So we never got to meet them, which was a shame, it would have been really good. But I was happy enough just to have met Linde, Burton and Mige.

My friend and I made our way back across the city to be picked up. Still laughing and trying to walk with sore legs, it still hadn't sunk in that we had just seen HIM and had got to meet them. It only just started to sink in, when we were in the car on the way home - and only properly this morning.

It was a fucking great concert! The best that I have ever been too, and it was well worth getting off my sick bed, to see them - even if I have made myself even more ill. I don't care though - thinking about last night, cheers me right up, and I can't wait until the next concert! Going to see The Rasmus on Thursday if I'm well enough. It won't be as good as HIM, no-one will be, but I'm hoping it will be great as well!

I'm still ecstatic and high just about HIM - I'll never forget last night. I can die happy now! XD

2004-10-26 [Keii]: So thats what happened - it's only a quick account, and I know theres not much about what they were like on stage, but theres only so much you can use the words 'fucking great' as a description - everything else doesn't come close. You can't really describe it, the only way to describe it to the very best is using the words 'go to a concert and see'. Because I don't think anyone would understand what it's like, until you actually see them!
