Cardcaptor Sakura - Backstory
In Cardcaptor Sakura, Syaoran is a descendant of Clow Reed, the creator of the Clow Cards. As a member of the Li clan of sorcerers from Hong Kong, which Clow's mother was a member of, he believes that he should be the one to inherit the Clow Cards, rather than Sakura. He first appears as an antagonist in the story, though in the manga he does not successfully capture any of the cards, and in the anime only a few. Later he becomes Sakura's ally and friend, and eventually they fall in love with each other.

In the series, Li is shown, or at least implied, to be an excellent fighter, swordsman (using a jian), and sorcerer. His magical abilities are centered around elemental spells using his sword or a collection of ofuda.

Syaoran is voiced by Motoko Kumai in the anime.
