Player - Grengo

Name - Camus Mattia

Race - Human

Sub-race - Ravillan

Class - Paladin

Allegiance - Caessen Empire

Appearance - A giant, powerfully built man, Camus stands at just a little over 6'5 and brings with him an aura of intimidation which will make even the hardiest of men cower away from his fierce gaze. With skin darker than the brownest of oaks, Camus has an exotic look about him, made all the more so by his fairly long, flowing jet black hair and small, well-trimmed beard.

A walking mountain of muscle, he looks to be as strong and as fierce as a grizzly bear; sometimes confused as one on occasion. His powerful physique allows him to wield weapons and other objects deemed far too heavy for normal mortals to hold with relative ease. Though fairly young, he looks more like a man in his 40s rather than 30s, the result of years of combat, suffering, and travel.

In terms of attire, his is the standard Paladin fare; a heavy suit of platinum-colored armor with silver chainmail underneath. Over his chest armor hangs a red cloth with the golden symbol of a cross in its middle. Attached to the cloth and waving loosely in the wind on his back is a long red cape, adorned with the golden symbol of the Caessen Empire. Equipped on his left forearm is a medium-sized shield, meant to hold off enemies while he prepares his dreaded Cross Redemption to strike them down.

Underneath his armor and occupying several parts of his skin are many battle scars of different shapes and sizes; reminders of the times of war in which Camus survived through. It is practically impossible to see these numerous scars, however, as the only part of his body not covered in armor is his head.

Age - 32

Personality - Deeply religious and fanatical about his cause, Camus is a man with little humor and even less patience. He has a fatalistic mentality, believing that all things in life are determined by a higher power, and thus so often does he risk his life for many things that a good portion of those people who've met him have thought him as nearly suicidal. Because of these faults, or perhaps despite of them, Camus is a fiercely loyal servant of the Empire and of the heavenly kingdom. As a Paladin, he never tells a lie (though he'll occasionally give vague answers to the truth, if he deems it necessary) and hardly ever speaks ill of someone behind their back (though he'll say it to their face). Occasionally, however, one may see glimpses of a different man behind the menacing stranger; a man weary of corruption and war, constantly seeking inner peace.

History - Born to a low-class family in Ida, Camus was the fifth child among eight; the offspring of a nursemaid and a Ravillan Infantryman. Due to the numerous children in the household, their financial problems, and the troubled era in which they lived in, Camus's parents were rarely home as they worked hard from dusk to dawn in a lifelong struggle to make ends meet. Constantly left unsupervised, the Mattia children became wild and unruly, sometimes committing petty acts of crime; over the years, two of Camus's brothers became infamous bandits. Both were later caught and hung while in their early 20s. Camus was the most introverted of the children, as well as the quietest, and himself commited no punishable crime.

As the years flew by, the Mattia household slowly withered away; the father was killed in battle, the two eldest were hung, three others died of malnutitrion, and, later, all but Camus were taken by disease. At the age of 15, himself near Death's door, Camus came and fell upon the stone steps of an Idan Church where, by Providence, he was found and taken care of by the High Priest of that sect. Nursed back to health and raised like a son, Camus had never felt so much at ease as he did during those times and he grew to love the new father figure who aided him during those times.

Wishing to protect his new father and the Church, as well as spread the influence of the Sect, Camus began his training as a Paladin under the watchful eye of the High Priest and his Holy Knights. Fiercely loyal, as well as physically powerful, he became a natural candidate for the title of Paladin and, in a relatively short amount of time, he turned into one. By this time, at the age of 24, he traveled the lands vanquishing those deemed 'evil' and protecting and serving the innocent. It was during these times that the civil war began, Lord Falco Orator had been killed in a great battle, the last battle of the hateful war with the Dah'kin that had extended for eight years. Humbled, his brother Antiscious arranged a cease fire with the Dah'kin, then returned to Ravilla bearing the bad news. Immediately, rumours began to fill the imperial city as the crowning of the new Emperor Anticious was being prepared. Finally, the young princess Claudia Orator, who was only 14 at the time, openly denounced her half-brother of plotting the death of the emperor. The civil war started immediately afterwards. Lord Barenzo, leader of the church of the Empire, claimed that according to the order of succession, the crown belonged to Anticious, he sided with him. To the surprise of everyone, the Sentinel Tiberius, commander of the Paladins, followed Barenzo, dragging all the Paladins to the Nervan side. Anticious had on his side the regions of Lochmore, Rhoa, and Caerham, Claudia had Rysallis, Xiadom and Ravilla. After several months of a cold war with the occassional combat, a truce was settled and the new kingdoms (Caessen and Nerva) recognized each other legally.

During the early days of the war, the High Priest of Camus's Sect in Ida supported the cause of Nerva; with him came the many Paladins of his Church, Camus being one of them. Besides this, the Paladin had learned of his longtime hero Lord Tiberius's questionable defection from the Empress's side and joining the side of the unpopular Barenzo. This further coaxed Camus into joining the side of Nerva, despite the wounds in his conscience for having betrayed the Empress. For the longest time, however, he never understood Tiberius's motives for leaving Claudia, not until it was too late.

While in Nerva, Camus met and befriended a young priest by the name of Ortho D'Artagmion. An intelligent and resourceful man, Ortho may not have been the bravest, strongest, or fastest of men, but throughout the years there was no one else who Camus would rather have by his side; not even his comrade, Sextus, who joined alongside him in the Paladin ranks, but became the wiser by not joining the side of Barenzo. While in his tenure in Nerva also, Camus learned to respect and even appreciate the Lizardmen of Rhoa, considering them even more human than many humans he had met.

The Tharezians, however, were another matter altogether. While the Lizardmen had joined the side of Tiberius and Anticious willingly, considering themselves Nervans at heart, the Tharezians were poisonous vipers; On one occasion in the jungles in Sai'thareze, a younger Camus saw the flames in the vipers' eyes and so turned to Lord Anticious, saying, "They hate us, my liege." The latter, keeping his eyes straight on the road ahead, replied "Let them hate us, good Camus, as long as they fear us." It was needless to say that Camus fully admired the brave Anticious, who had fought in the front along side the likes of Tiberius; he was everything Barenzo was not.

Years afterward, during the time of Paladin's Fall, Camus experienced firsthand the horrors of war as he witnessed several of his comrades struck down by Calvas, the Lizardking, Abiddz, the Tharezian Chieftan, and a horde of Tharezians and some Lizardmen. The battle was bloody and savage; Calvas was killed by Tiberius, who along with several other Paladins, was later slaughtered by a mysterious new entity who entered the battlefield. So frightening was this monstrous being that Camus found himself running for his life; coming upon a frightened Ortho, the Paladin took him by the collar and dragged him away from the battlefield, cleaving friend and foe left and right in order to forge a path through.

Two days did Camus and Ortho ran, until they were caught by a band of Catfolk and imprisoned. After weeks of torture, the two were released and were awaited by Sextus, who led Camus, Ortho, and the 300 survivors to Decima where they were personally met by a more mature Empress; she received Camus as a friend, even though the Paladin felt he deserved no such treatment after having betrayed her years ago.

Currently, Camus has spent much time trying to make up his betrayal to his lord, Tiberius, to his friend Sextus, but more importantly, to his Empress. Now he is in another mission, hoping it to end soon so he can go back to Decima. This mission, however, has proven more tedious than the previous ones; if not for Ortho looking over the prisoners, Camus would not know what he would do. Between that repulsive creature Vineg, which he had to capture himself, and that crazy girl who tried to attack him a few days ago, things are proving to be unbearable. The only good part about this journey is the young soldier recently discovered, Liaco. Though somewhat girly, Camus considers the man brilliant.

Weapon of Choice - Cross Redemption (A very large weapon; it is like a distorted combination of an axe and a spear, with a four and a half feet long hardwood handle for holding the weapon, and a heavy, sharp silver material in the shape of the cross, used for slashing and impaling. Particularly effective against those who abandoned the light, but weaker than normal against those who follow the light)

Others - Due to his lack of mobility (what with his armor and large weapon, and all), Camus often mounts a steed during his travels. The horse, Octavio, is powerful enough to hold it's master's weight and still be able to move relatively easily.
