Chapter Four: Fruit

Down near the river by a big oak tree, a little black cat lays his eyes on a golden finch, picking berries off the ground. He stares and he crouches, slyly edging closer. His bright blue eyes never flinch. Betty Greygoose pulls an apple out of her bag along with the new book she had just bought from the shop called “The Shell.” The finch flies away in alarm and the cat, similarly, jumps back, arched and poised to run. Betty takes a bite out of her apple. It’s crisp and delicious. She holds it between her teeth as she clears a space for her to sit down. When there's nothing but the core left, she places it in a handkerchief and back inside her bag. She pulls out a croissant and gobbles that up too, licking the crumbs off her fingers.

Meanwhile, the little black cat sits and ponders her. That bird was tastier than fruit, more ripe, and more juicy. However, he's a cat with passing fancies. He licks his paw, rubs his face, and goes to brush up against Betty's legs.

Yet down not a few feet hops the golden finch once more. So tempting...so close...plucking fallen fruit from off the ground. Those big blue eyes stare, and the hunt is back on.
