Chapter One
Day Dream Believer
No one told him he could fly but he was indeed flying. He was fluttering in the sky of peppermint lollipops. Below all the candy cane hula dancers waved at him. He landed beside them and began to dance the hula.
“Paul?” came a voice so distant. “Pauly? PAUL!”
Paul opened his eyes to find everyone in his class was staring at him. His teacher was right in front of his face.
“Yes teacher?” he asked as if nothing had happened.
“Tell me Mr. Freemit what is the scientific for a swan?”
“There is Cygnus Olor which is for the mute swan which is the most common swan. Then there is Cygnus columbianus which is the Tundra swan which is only found in North American and Eurasian tundras. The Black-necked swan also known as Cygnus melanocoryphus is only found in South America. The rare Black swan is known as the Cygnus atratus and---”
“Okay, okay!” the teacher sighed. “Go back to sleep and day dream.”
“Okay.” Paul bent his head down and pretended to snore. Everyone laughed.
Paul Freemit was a normal yet extremely popular kid. Funny, smart, athletic, musically talented and extremely cute. There was only one problem. He was a big day dreamer. Ever day in all of his subjects the teachers would get onto him for daydreaming. He didn’t mean to. He just sometime be in his only little world.
He soon fell back into his little dream phase. He dreamed that he was in a palace and was playing his new song for the king which he had titled “Lemonade Scissors.”
You can’t drink lemonade with scissors
No, no, no you can’t, no way
He finshed; the crowd clapped in admiration. Paul smiled but then he sighted someone in the back wasn’t positive. He jumped off the stage to see why the person was so poignant. The figure was crouching behind a pillar full of red cherry soda. He looked closer to see the person was actually a girl who was about the same age as him. She was crying into her hands with her head bent. She would have looked typical except for one thing. She was dressed as if she had just come from ancient Egypt.
“Hello?” He placed his hand on her arm. “Is something wrong?”
Her weeping ceased at the sound of his tone. She slowly lifted her head up and face him. He backed away when he saw the wet mascara. Paul looked behind him to see his bubbly, rainbow palace was no more. He stood alone in a barren waster land of white.
“Help me.” she squeaked. “Before I forget to live.”
Paul was so scared he woke up immediately. He gasped loudly which brought the teacher to his desk. He felt Paul’s head and sent him to the nurse’s office.
“Lie down Paul.” she commanded. “I’ll be right back to take your temperature.”
Paul took her advice and laid down. When the door opened again he thought it was the nurse. He turned over on his side but saw not the nurse but a tiny little girl dressed up as a one.
“What?” asked Paul. “Where’s the nurse?”
The girl didn’t answer but just climbed onto the bed. She took her took doctor bag and took out a plastic thermometer
“What are you---”
“No talking!” she popped the toy into his mouth. Later she took it out. “I knew it! You’re the one.”
“What are you talking about?” he asked.
“No time to explain,” she answered back. “After school take the bus to this address.”
She took out a fuzzy, pink pad and gel pad. She scribbled something down, tore off the paper and gave it to Paul. The girl had written down an address.
186 Insomnia Lane
He looked up to ask the girl where he was going but she was gone. The door opened again , the real nurse had come back.
“Where’d the little girl go?” he asked her. She looked at him with a very confused look. “Oh never mind!”
The nurse found he wasn’t sick but Paul was convinced he was. The nurse thought he was trying to get out of school but he wasn’t. He just was completely lost. He had lunch next and he was starving. After getting his food, he sat with his fellow day dreaming friends who weren’t as smart as he was.
“I just don’t get it,” said Elliot, biting into his roast beef sandwich. “How can you be smarter than us? We day dream too.”
“I know.” Paul smiled. “Its just my special talent.”
“So which song is your favorite?” asked Vinny. “Daydream Believer or the Dream, Dream song? Oh! And your favorite band! Is it Dream?”
Everyone began to burst out laughing at these comments. “Very funny guys,” Paul said sarcastically. The laughing stopped. “Well that was---” he started. He looked at his friends. Something weird was happening. He looked closer. They had all stopped moving.
The door opened behind him which was the only movement. All other movement had stopped completely. Paul looked around to see the mini nurse and the girl from his dream.
“Don’t forget us.” she begged. “Please.”
“I won’t.” he promised.
“Help us,” the older girl said. “We need you Paul.”
Soon they were gone.
“Paul?” asked Elliot. “Is everything okay man?”
“Fine.” he answered. “Dreamily-----
------I mean perfectly fine.”
