2008-12-30 [Skydancer]: Looks fascinating, though not sure I could eat there. :D Really marvelous look at the place.
2008-12-30 [Easterling]: I didn't eat pigfeet when I was there - but when I showed the picture of it to my uncle he and his wife gave me some, which I tasted here back home! x)
2009-02-04 [hanhepi]: but the pigs feet are some of the LEAST scary items for sale! i've never tried them (alone. obviously i've had them in hot dogs), its the larva i'd have been scared of. i just cant picture myself hungry enough to eat baby bugs. :/ do they cook them first? i might eat a cooked one... with some sort of sauce on it.
and uh... why is there a basket of bees?
2009-02-04 [Easterling]: Hot dogs! Means something completely different when you've been to China....
I ate larva (so that's the word - I've tried spuds, or catepillars in English but I don't think those were the best ones), then they were roasted in chili. We told our translator that they could order something they liked, and she talked about the babies of some insect living in bamboo. We looked at each other, first, me and my friend, but then we said: "Just order what you want!" We had said earlier that we'd like to try everything so...
Well.. there was a woman sitting there rinsing the bee-waxes from larvas and living bees - so I don't know really what she was selling - the larvas or the honey-wax!..
2009-02-04 [hanhepi]: well, cooked in chilis, those might be ok thatway. i would try it, if i was somewhere that people ate them a lot, i sure wouldnt try cooking them, or even collecting them, on my own. lol.
yeah, bugs go through a few stages, pupua (sp?), larva, adult. pretty sure thats the order. guess i could google "life cycle of bugs", but i'm pretty lazy.lol
i know some culters make a tea from the actual bees. cant remember why, its something medicinal, and the chineese are big into medicinal teas. might be them. hell, for all i know they might roast or steam them and hold em by the stinger and eat them (picture coctail snacks with tooth-picks in them.)
2009-02-04 [Easterling]: No, cooking them would be awful! Imagine trying to pour down a bowl of living larvas into the wok-pan! xD
No.. egg, larva, pupua and then adult. Ever seen on a wild nature-show how a butterfly crawls out from a pupua and then sits on a branch to dry its wings?
Yeah, it might be that way. Not unbeliveable at all.
2009-02-04 [hanhepi]: i was close! not too bad for not having googled it first, and only studding it breifly over 12 years ago. lol
i'm a horrible cook anyway. i cant imagine what my cooking would do to a larva.
2009-02-04 [Easterling]: I think there were just the larvas and some fresh pieces of chili in it. Some oil of course. The messy part would be to keep them from escaping before pouring them in.
2009-04-13 [organicparadox]: the single point perspective shots are the best, but i liked looking through all the food the chinese eat. i think grubs might be a lil hard for me to swallow down, but the veggies looked so fresh!
2009-04-13 [Easterling]: Grubs? Do you mean the larvas? Well, it's easy if you imagine they're french fries! ;)
2009-04-13 [organicparadox]: lol, i'll eat almost anything fried.
2009-04-14 [Easterling]: Larvaes fried with chili... not the best things I've eaten, but anyway.. :P
2009-04-14 [organicparadox]: lol, ox balls soup in sarajevo. the soup was bad enough, but then to find out why it was so bad half way through the bowl...... i was mortified
were the larvae slimy on the inside or what? spicy;)
2009-04-14 [Easterling]: Balls! :P Maybe there are limits to what I can eat, anyway. I'm always so proud of that I can eat anything!
No, they were crispy all the way through. A little strange after-taste on the tongue, that was all, not really spicy. It wasn't the larvae on the picture here, though. I don't know really if the woman was selling the honey-wax, the wasps or the larvaes...
2009-04-14 [organicparadox]: haha. i wouldn't have dipped my spoon had i known that soup was tainted! my bravery has its limits for sure.
i'll eat bugs though. as long as they taste good:)
