Chapter fourteen
Trapper and I skirted away from him slightly as he began to hum to himself, he seemed completely detached from the real world.
“What is going on here?” I asked Trapper, no bothering to lower my voice since the guard had left long ago and I was sure a brass band could run through the cell and TNT wouldn’t notice.
“I’m not sure; I woke up to find them trying to take my legs away. I’ve got a feeling that we’ll discover what’s going on here very soon” Trapper sighed.
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“You, the nut job over there and I are all new. They want to test out what we can do before they assign us anything” Trapper hissed to me.
“How did you know that?” I asked, amazed by Trapper’s insight into our situation.
“Easy, ask” Trapper chuckled gently “One thing I’ve learnt about these bad guys is that they love to gloat.” I was even more impressed with his nerve; here he was, no escape plan, a restrain collar around his neck, no idea what was waiting down the line and worst of all no legs yet he was still as cheerful as ever before.
“There’s a brick loose” TNT said suddenly, still staring at a wall. I looked up at him and then at the wall he was staring at. It was a solid slab on concrete, not a hint of a brick anywhere.
“Good for you” I mumbled, rolling my eyes slightly. Just my luck, I got stuck with a loon who stared at walls. He didn’t seem very dangerous right now though, just strange.
Trapper groaned and cracked his back “I guess all we can do is sit here and wait for them to come back.” Hardly a moment had passed before three black guards arrived at our door; their faces were still hidden behind masks, they didn’t want us to see who they were. They cracked open the door without a word and motioned at us to follow. They didn’t need guns anymore; we were already leashed by the collars. I walked out first because I was the one most suited to do it there, Trapper had to get back into his wheelchair and two guards had to enter to grab TNT’s arms to get him to move. I tried to look around as we were marched through the concrete slab covered complex but there moment my eyes moved off the floor the back of someone’s hand hit me. From the muffled curse I’d say the person who had hit me had been worse off. I could hear noises all around us as we walked; human noises, sobbing, heavy breathing, shouting and the constant smell of fear. There were random windows spattered around the walls, piercing into the darkness that haunted the corridors. I could tell that this place was worse than anything I’d ever seen before and my eyes had still never left the floor.
“Stop” a strong male voice said from behind me; the ferocity told me he was the one who had hurt his hand. We all stopped, Trapper went from moving to still so suddenly his guard almost ran into him. I heard a creek in front of us and I raised my head only slightly to see a door being pushed open; a stainless steel room lay behind it. I couldn’t see all the way but the tiny glimpse into the room I had made me think back to the slaughterhouse
’s steel machines.
“You three, in there” another male voice said, a hand pushing me towards the doors. I stumbled through into the room and moved aside at once as a growling Trapper was forcefully wheeled in after me. TNT was deposited beside Trapper, after a while they caught on and turned TNT around to face in.
“Please step through the doors” a soft female voice said from in front of us, it was the sort of voice that tried to comfort you before the needle stuck in your arm. I looked up tentatively and caught sight of the nurse, she looked the same as every other white clad doctor assistant that held your hand when you were a kid; one major difference was that all of the white clad people in the room had surgery masks over their faces. No one wanted to be seen, not even the doctors. I was stopped from staring as someone grabbed a spike on my head and yanked me forward until I was tossed headlong into a separate room.
Beyond was a simple room; a single light, a chute on the wall, probably a one way mirror and a table with a puzzle on top of it. I walked over to the table and sat down, sighing and staring at the puzzle. Blocks, they were always blocks. I picked them up in my talons and began to amuse myself instead of doing what they wanted; no doubt as I started to create a tower out of misshapen blocks Trapper had already completed his. Sighing and started to put them together, after a few minutes it was a small boat. There was a clang almost at once and the chute fell open. I got up, walked lazily over to the chute and picked up a rope. I stared at it confused for a second before there was a massive yank and I was almost sent headfirst into the one way mirror. Growling gently I gripped onto the rope and gave it a viscous pull, I felt something give way on the other side before the tension started again. It was a simple tug of war and I didn’t feel like playing fair. I loosened my pull slightly and whoever was on the other side began to increase their efforts. With a twist of my wrist and a snick of the rope being cut I was rewarded by the sound of whoever was tugging at the other side smashing into some hopefully dangerous and expensive equipment.
“Anything else?” I spat at the mirror, crossing my arms and glaring so hard I was surprised it wasn’t melting. I could almost hear them talking behind the mirror, trying to decide what to do with me. There was another clang as something else dropped down the chute. I picked it up and examined it; it was small, green and-. The blast took me off my feet and tossed me across the room like a rag doll. When the room was finished waltzing around I pulled myself off the wall with a groan of pain, the room was filled with smoke so I covered my nose and coughed loudly again. I’d had enough of this. I dashed forward, spiked fist held high. I slammed it over and over again into the mirror, cracking it from side to side. I knew it was coming but being dragged backwards out of the room was never fun. I was thrown to the floor heavily and two heavy boots were on my back, holding me down.
“Cowards, you’re all a bunch of bloody cowards” I coughed again and again, trying to get up but I kept being shoved back down again.
“Let me kill him” a female voice growled “He’s a troublemaker; he’ll never do an honest day’s work.”
“Shut up and stun him” a male voice said, the boots were removed and I heard the sound of a gun being cocked. I was about to get up when the gun fired and I felt a painful blow to my back. I let out another yell of pain and there was a murmur around me.
“Shoot him again” it was the nurse this time, now I knew why they didn’t want to be seen. There was another bang and I slid a few meters across the floor, another flowering of pain blossoming on my back.
“It just bounces off” the male said almost in wonder. There was another sound of a gun being cocked and I curled up in anticipation of the pain.
“Stop” a woman’s voice said; I recognised it, she was the one who had ignored the fact I was awake, who’d carried me across the fear and sweat riddled yard and unfortunately the one I had thrown up all over. “I’ll deal with him, the gun doesn’t work so let me have a go.” My head spike was gripped hard and I was forced to my feet or it’d come off. I was led away from the others, unable to see the woman leading me or where I was going. I heard a door open and I was pulled into what I discovered was a storage closet. I was thrown against the wall and held there by my neck. I grimaced and closed my eyes tight, expecting something heavy to smash me across the face. There was a sound of cloth moving and then something happened that I would never expect in a million years. A pair of lips pressed themselves against mine; I smelt their sweaty freed hair and tasted their skin against my lips. I suddenly pushed them away and stared in disbelief at the slightly sweaty, tousle haired and relieved looking lady.
“J-Jessica?”
