Ferngully: The Last Rainforest review

1992
Directed by Bill Kroyer

Starring Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater and Robin Williams

Whoa. Talk about old school, right? If you can't tell by the title, or by my little blurb, this is one of those movies that went right over my head when I was a child. The only thing I really got out of it was the part where they jump on lily pads and they light up (I would do this dance with them in my tiny living room) and scared by the gas-guzzling monster that make an appearance throughout the movie but really doesn't make his movie 'til the end.

Oh, and my mother muttering, "damn tree-huggers" as she walked by while I watched.

This movie, plot-wise however, is about a fairy named Christa, who lives in a forest that's being cut down by tree loggers like Zak (who listens to a walkman. With tapes. Oh god...). Well, she's besotted by him, and he gets made fairy-sized (and unluckily for him, he gets no wings. Poo.)

Meanwhile, an evil being called Hexxus (voiced by Tim Curry, who is uh-mazing, by the way) is plotting to take down all the trees, and be evil. And stuff. (By the way, Hexxus is gas/oil/yuckiness. ew.)

I don't want to spoil the ending, but... All the trees are saved and Zak learns to appreciate the magic of the forest! ... Yeah.

It's a good movie for kids, but now that I can see the political agenda behind it, I'm a little less in love with the film than when I was a kid. Obviously, since it goes right over children's heads, this was supposed to be more of a message for the parents who were unfortunate enough to watch.

It isn't horrible, and I'll probably only keep the VHS for old times' sakes, but I wouldn't go so far as to praise it.

...Damn tree-huggers.
