Harrison - Pale Demon review
Pale Demon is the ninth book in Kim Harrison's
Hollows series. This time around, Rachel Morgan must go to San Francisco in order to appear before the Coven of Moral and Ethical Standards in order to remove her shunning. It is supposed to be a formality, but there's reason to believe the Coven will not hold to their earlier agreement, especially when she's nearly arrested at the airport. At the same time, Trent Kalamack, businessman/po
litician/drug lord, needs to get to the west coast for an unspecified reason, though there are assassins attempting to stop him, and he can't take his private jet. Quen, his bodyguard, can't accompany him because his pregnant wife, Ceridwen, is due to give birth any day, so Trent needs Rachel's help.
So, Rachel and Trent team up for a cross-country roadtrip. Rachel's partners, Ivy and Jenks, join them for the trip. They have to contend with assassins out to get Trent, Coven spies, and gangs of pixies not pleased to allow Jenks to pass through their territories. To top it off, they come across a demon who is able to freely walk the earth, even in daylight.
This is another solid entry to the series. The action is fast and fun. Character development continues unabated. The relationship between Rachel and Trent evolves as the two try to determine how much they trust each other. We get much more insight into the characters of Algaliarept and Newt, due to Rachel's actions in the Ever After.
