Since I began collecting “Harry Potter” merchandise, especially action figures, I almost immediately skipped over Mattel’s sculpts in favor of other lines. Frankly, Mattel didn’t do that great a job with the majority of the “Harry Potter” products that it released, and so I wasn’t too happy when I learned that I would be receiving one of the Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue as a gift for one of my birthdays a few years back. However, upon opening my gift and actually looking over my new Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue, I was fairly impressed with the level of detail that Mattel put into this sculpt.

While I know that there are other statues in this line, the Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue is the only one that I currently own, and I’m sure that my friend paid a pretty penny for it when it first came out. However, it doesn’t look as though the value is much these days, and many online shops are likely to sell it for a fraction of what my friend paid.

Complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, my Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue (a limited sculpt as only 5,000 were made) measures in at roughly ten inches tall. In the first Harry Potter Book/Movie, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Hagrid works at the magical school of Hogwarts and lives on the grounds in a hut. Well, actually he does all of that for the majority of the series, but the point is, in the first book/movie, there is a scene where Hagrid is hatching a dragon egg. The Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue is of this moment.

The Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue features Hagrid sitting in his hut, table stacked high with books on dragon care, fire roaring, and a newly hatched Norwegian Ridgeback in his lap. The Norwegian Ridgeback, Norbert (later learned to be a female), is quite detailed. She has beautiful green scales, deep black wings, fierce orange ridges and bright red eyes. Norbert is excellently crafted and is amazingly textured, which makes the paint-job just that much more incredible.

Hagrid is also wonderfully crafted and detailed, and the scale of the whole piece (which is just one piece!) is astoundingly accurate.

For collectors, this is truly a great piece to own, though I’m sure that for only 5,000 sculpts being produced, the Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue is probably not too difficult to find given how much the value of it has decreased throughout the years. However, with “Harry Potter” only growing in popularity and with the final two movies in the making, perhaps the value of limited merchandise like the Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue will once again raise in popularity and value, those of us who own our very own Mattel Harry Potter Hagrid's New Arrival Statue will find ourselves with a true treasure in our hands.
