Hunger Games review

So many people will disagree with me on this, and if you do, good for you for enjoying something that I absolutely could not. And here is why.

Firstly, from the start, the writing style is so elementary at best. There is a great lack of descriptions, things (such as actual conversations) are completely glossed over, and there are sentences that need rereading in order to understand.

The characters are impossible to emotionally connect to. The descriptions and writing of their actions and reactions are so dry that it lacks any sort of deeper connection. Granted, this is probably the writer's interpretation of the character, but even when the main character (who I will get to later) is extremely emotional, the writing is painfully dry.

Plot devices are left completely unexplained. And while this is not necessarily a bad thing, when you do not explain why important character motivations are added in places that seem inappropriate, it pulls a person out of the story.

Lastly, the main character is so oblivious, flawed, and idiotic that had she actually been in this world, she would have been arrested or killed before she was ever actually entered. But everything is set up to be easy for her, things happen by chance to make her life easy, and so she is victorious. There is so little actual intelligence and planning in this character that it boggles the mind how anyone could make it as far as she does.

I can not in good conscious recommend this book to anyone. Ever.

2013-10-23 [Ravenclaw]: Told you.

2013-10-23 [Flisky]: I only read it because someone else made me buy it in exchange for making her buy Ender's Game. She got the better end of that deal, for sure.

2013-10-23 [Ravenclaw]: Ive not read Ender's Game, but Hunger Games was the longest 30 hours of my life.

2013-10-23 [Flisky]: I read it in 9 hours, straight through. But I'm a ridiculously fast reader.

And I highly, HIGHLY recommend Ender's Game.

2013-10-23 [Ravenclaw]: I listened to the audio books and guesstimated it at being 30 hours.

2013-10-23 [Flisky]: Oh. Ew. Reading it was bad enough, listening to it might have killed me.

2013-10-23 [Ravenclaw]: I hated the voice of the lady who narrated it. I think she's the same chic who makes Mercy sound like a dumbass in the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, which I recommend to EVEYTONE. I even got Chel to read them. She's hooked and she never reads for recreation.

2013-10-23 [Flisky]: That's even worse.

And this series...I've never heard of it.

2013-10-23 [Ravenclaw]: Its really good. Sod got me into it. I really like Brigg's writing. I absolutely love her Alpha and Omega series. It exists in the same realm as the Mercy books and even shares characters in some cases.
