In previous lessons you learned how to count from 1-100 but what about numbers higher than 100? Maybe even 1,000 or 1,000,000? In this lesson you will learn how to count number higher than 100.

Numbers:

101-199: ciento ____
200: doscientos/as
300: trescientos/as
400: cuatrocientos/as
500: quinientos/as
600: seiscientos/as
700: setecientos/as
800: ochocientos/as
900: novecientos/as
1.000: mil
1.100: mil cien
2.000: dos mil
5.000: cinco mil
100.000: cien mil
200.000: doscientos mil
550.000: quinientos cincuenta mil
1.000.000: un millón (de)
8.000.000: ocho millones (de)

100-199:

The numbers between 100 and 200 will always begin with 'ciento' and then continue through the normal number line as you have learned already.

For example:

101- ciento uno
110- ciento diez
150- ciento cincuenta
176- ciento setentaseis or ciento setenta y seis
199- ciento noventa y nueve

This isn't hard to learn if you already know your numbers 1-99 well enought to apply them here. This can also be used in a sentence, not only for the amount of something but also for the cost of something.

For example:

There are 120 hats

- Hay ciento viente sombreros.

The shirt costs 170 dollars

- La camisa cuesta ciento setenta dólares.

Now to the numvers 200-999, they are a little bit different from the 100, other than the fact they are different words for the numbers.

200- doscientos/as
300- trescientos/as
400- cuatrocientos/as
500- quinientos/as
600- seiscientos/as
700- setecientos/as
800- ochocientos/as
900- novecientos/as

Notice that the endings of these numbers can either be the masculine ending -os or the feminine ending -as. These numbers apply towards what article they are defining, for example:

There are 220 letters

- Hay doscientas viente tarjetas.

There are 220 chicos

- Hay doscientos viente chicos.

Note: The object you are implying with the number will be plural, because there is more than object

Now when you want to say bigger number, like above, other than just the whole hundred you just add the normal number after, such as:

Hay cuatrocientos trienta y dos platos.

1000-9999

This can get a little bit confusing because the word for 1000 is 'mil' which can be confused with the word 'million'. These numbers are quite simple really, otherwise here is a basic line up of the numbers:

mil- 1000
dos mil- 2000
tres mil- 3000
cuatro mil- 4000
cinco mil- 5000
seis mil- 6000
siete mil- 7000
ocho mil- 8000
nueve mil- 9000
diez mil - 10000

When you need to write a number that isn't exactly whole like 1,200 you simply write it like this:

mil doscientos

A number that is more complex like 3,567 is written like this:

tres mil quinientos sesenta y siete

This works the same way as the numbers above, the same masculine and feminine rules for the hundreds place and what not. Remember the number '67' in the number '3,567' is written sesenta y siete not sesentasiete, add the the word 'y' in between the two digits. When it is spoken it is said either way.

When writting/speaking in the millions it it quite simple and really it isn't all that hard.
Remember there is an accent on the 'o' in 'millión' but not on the plural 'milliones'!

1 million- millión (?)
2 million- dos milliones (de)
3 million- tres milliones (de)
50 million- cincuenta milliones (de)
100 million- cien milliones (de)
500 million- quinientos milliones (de)

More examples exist obviously but I'm not going to go through the whole list of millions. Anyways, notice that some of the numbers end in 'de' this is for numbers that are not whole millions. Like 2,100,233 which is written like:

dos milliones de cien mil doscientos trienta y tres

It's a pain in the butt, I know but the spanish probably see our numbers in the same pain in the butt fashion :)
These numbers take nothing more than a lot of memorization and practice. Once you get the hang of the numbers then it's quite easy to count.
