Lok came into this world as a result of strange circumstances.
Generally, when regarding the origin of half-breeds, it is usually the male making the effort to mate with the female of a different species. And it is commonly consensual. Most often with half-elves that has been male humans seeking elven females (for obvious reasons). But in Lok's case, his mother was a human barbarian named Lortaia
* from the northern reaches who just about forced herself on a poor, defenseless elf named Sarsorias. The circumstances surrounding how they met is still a mystery to Lok, seeing as how it as never discussed. But, the word "rape" was thrown around by those he overheard talking about it.
Since being a half-blood was generally frowned upon by Sarsorias's community (and most elven communies, as it were), Lok wasn't allowed to grow up with much elven influence. He was raised by Lortaia and her tribe. But his childhood serenity was halted early, when, during one of Lortaia's adventures, she and her companions went into a crypt but never came out.
Days passed but Lok never saw the return of his mother. While the remaining members of her tribe were accepting of him, they never really felt like family to him.
A decade later, he learned the full details of the story of his mother's party's failure. It was at the hands of foul undead and the demons who were controlling them. From that moment, Lok decided to devote his life to the destruction of those demons. He was of age at the time, so he set out to the nearest city and told his story to the first church priest he encountered. Fortunately, it was a Pelorian church, whose mission coincided with Lok's purpose serendipitousl
y. He viewed that as a sign from Pelor that he had made the right decision.
As such, he enlisted in the church's order of exorcists, seeing as the most direct path to destroying demons would be aiding those poor souls who were possessed in his very town.
Thus began Lok's training against the undead as a Pelorian Exorcist. He gained Pelor's favor quickly, and was granted the ability to cast many spells which would aid him in his mission. He was also trained martially in the proper use of simple weapons so that he would not need to rely primarily on magic.
Lok quickly discovered that he preferred learning the offensive spells, as opposed to those of the healing variety that were popular among other clerics. He figured being an effective demon hunter meant learning how to effectively attack rather than simply expend spells to defend himself or to heal injuries.
However, he also knew that if circumstances turned dire for him, Pelor granted him the ability to sacrifice one of his learned spells to spontaneously cast those healing spells, if he were in need of them.
* Interesting side note: Lortaia is actually a human female barbarian that I played in an old 3.0 game. I will try to get her character sheet scanned as an extra level of awesomeness.
