Steampunk Goggles

If you haven't heard yet, Im going to start making Steampunk Goggles. They're going to be epic.

After 4 hours of trying to sew leather together, I realized Im not exactly Martha Stewart. I was going to use the caps off of some cheap $1 flashlights, since they already had a nice fit with real glass for the lenses. I finally finished one of the goggle coverings and... I don't like it. It looks too cheap and not 'steampunky' enough. I had already bought some other sweet metal goggle housings, but I didn't want to use them since I didn't have a source of glass that actually fit in them.

Im saying fuck it. The metal ones look fucking badass. Im probably going to have to just use plastic for the lenses until I find a source, but check them out- I haven't even put them together and they scream 'Awesome'.

They should look pretty much like this when they're finished, with some minor adjustments. You can't really see from this angle, but the right goggle housing is about 1/2" smaller than the left one, giving it a 'O.o' kind of look.

This is the goggle housing, covered with leather (thrown together, not yet sewn). The non-covered silver to the right is metal threads which Im going to have to take a hacksaw to, but its got sweet screws sticking out which I'll be cocking off to the side.

All the leather is just chopped up from a purse I bought earlier today for $2. I don't think I'll actually use the buckles off of the shoes I bought, since they're brass colored (I was hoping to grab some brass couplings from the hardware store, but they didn't have any of the right size and none with the cool screw thingies.

By far, the most expensive thing I bought to put all this together with is a spool of waxy artificial sinew (works well with sewing leather). I had to go clear into CDA to get it, down at Michaels- which is a craft shop. Ran me $15, but I have tons of the shit now- I can put at least 20 sets of goggles together with it.

The metal goggle housings I got at Ace Hardware for like $6 for the pair. Thrift shop for the $2 purse.
I had a curved needle laying around the house- besides that all you need is time. Im not that good at sewing, so Im going to try to get the sinew loaded into a sewing machine and let it do most of the work.

Hell. If I can figure out a way to mass produce these, Im going to try selling them on Ebay for like $40 a piece. These things are going to be heavy duty, no cheap shit, so I don't think I'll have any trouble with selling them. Thats a ways off though, I still haven't put together my first pair, so hang in there with me on requests (of course I wouldn't charge you guys that much).

I'll keep you guys updated.
