Oedipus at Colonus; Sophocles review

This is the follow-up to Oedipus Rex, and talks of how Oedipus travels with his two daughters, Ismene and Antigone. Not as interesting as Oedipus Rex or Antigone (if you ask me), but was a good read nonetheless.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: Bit short for a review, could you not think of just a liiiittle more to add to it? I'm so critical today, sorry. :P But I'm a classicist, and it pains me to see it dismissed like this in jut two sentences. ;_;

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I'm sorry. I just... didn't like it much, so I guess I don't have much to say. :/ I liked Antigone much, much, MUCH better.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: I prefer this one. Antigone annoys me because I can't really empathise with the dilemma the characters face of duty to city and duty to family, but in Oedipus At Colonus the transformation of fallen hero back into hero grabs my attention far more. But I think of the three Theban plays, Oedipus at Colonus is probably the one that requires most background knowledge to understand, which I guess is why it's nowhere near as popular as Oedipus Rex and Antigone. Just like most non-classicists prefer the Odyssey, and most Classicists prefer the Iliad. :P

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: This is true. (: And I'll always have a special place in my heart for Antigone because I preformed in it (even though we were awful... Our chorus couldn't remember their lines and couldn't speak together DX). I tried reading the Odyssey when I was a 6th grader (so... Like.. 11 or 12 years old I was?) but I couldnt' sit still long enough to read it. I'll be reading it this year for my CNES World of Greece class though, and I am excited.:D I have always wanted to finish it.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: So why wait for the class? Finish it now. :3

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I have to buy it. XD I'm waiting for my scholarship money to be deposited into my account so I don't need to spend my work money on my books. >.O Even though I think it's only like... $12 at the book store.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: Second Hand bookshops ftw. :P They usually have a few copies of classics like that lying around. Unless someone like me lives in the area, and clears them out on a weekly basis. <_<

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I totally agree. I love Half-Priced books! :D
