Chapter Two

The wolves quickly headed down the wet streets and alleys of the city. Molly kept a fast pace, not wanting to be seen by any humans. This was considerably difficult given that there is a large number of wolves with her. She tried to guide the small pack of wolves through the secluded pathways of the city, wanting to avoid the main streets. The sky became noticeably darker as the storm hovered above the group. Molly led everyone to a wire fence that bordered around a construction site. A brief lightning flash illuminated everything for an instant. Molly slid through an area of fence that was previously peeled open, leaving a small hole. She waited until everyone was through before continuing into the construction area further. The soil was soft and held numerous puddles throughout. As the rain poured harder, Molly led everyone through the twists and turns of the half built structures. It was difficult to keep track of where one was located due to the amount of rain, darkness and mud they were traveling in.

"It's right here." Molly concluded, sliding down into a cellar door to a house that was in the process of being demolished. There was no first floor to the small cottage, yet the cement basement was still in tact. The basement was only a single room with an old style stove and a mangy rug in the center.

Arron stood at the entrance, staring at the sky for a bit before entering. He glanced around the room and opted to stay in wolf form right then.

Lakota trotted into the room and accidentally collided with Arron. "Oops, my bad." Putting her ears back she moved to the other side of the room and leaned against the wall.

It had been almost impossible to move the meat through the narrow streets and winding passageways but someone Garth had managed to help bring it this far. With help of course. He carefully walked sideways, propping the meat up in the corner of the cellar and immediatley switched back into his mangey wolf mode.

Augustine strode in, giving the air a few sniffs before immediately claiming the rug. "Not bad," he said, continuing to gaze around.

Molly shook her fur, spraying water on the others around her. She shifted into a human and knelt in front of the stove. After opening the little iron door, she lit the flame.

Eyeing Molly, Arron moved over to where Lakota was and sat a little ways away, gnawing at the meat he had brought for himself. The stove flame made him just a bit nervous, but then again, being inside a building for the first time in ages made him nervous, too.

"A stove!" Mercie said as if she hadn't believed it earlier. She stood close to Molly but with enough distance between tham that she didn't crowd her. She rubbed her hads together waiting for the pilot to catch.

Laying down on her side, Lakota began to settle down a bit. Placing her head on the floor her muzzle nudged against Arron on accident. "Sorry...God, it's warmer in here, warmer then I've ever been..." Closing her eyes she smiled while listening to everyone around her.

Arron looked over at Lakota, pausing from his meal. He scooted a bit closer, shivering slightly from the damp still in his fur. He continued gnawing, letting the warmth ease the cold.

After the fire took hold, Molly shut the little metal door and opened the vent to let the heat out into the room. She turned around and found herself practically waist deep in wolf. "Erm....sorry it's a little snug." Thinking to herself, she concluded that it would be impossible for her or anyone else to sleep with no one else touching them. "Nothing like a little bonding time, right?"

Lakota moved her huge body closer to Arron and rested her head on his back. "You can use me for warmth." She flinched slightly as memories flooded her mind once again. This group reminded herself so much of how it used to be. Finding food, sharing it, and then keeping each other warm during winter. She whimpered slightly as she practically laid her body against his. "That ok?"

Garth's muzzle was wide in a wolf yawn, though strangely his teeth seemed very sharp and white compared to the grey ball of decay image he gave out. He stared blearily at everyone around him, and practically on top of him, since no one seemed to be thanking Molly he leant over and gently headbutter her thigh. He grumbled a small "Thanks" to her and curled up beside the stove, practically on her feet.

Arron shivered again, and smiled at Lakota. "That's fine. Thanks." He looked over at Molly. "Thank you for letting us stay here, Molly. This is, I'm sure, much better than where the rest of us have been staying." Arron laid his head down against Lakota and watched the rest.

Augustine had been sitting on the rug rather alertly, as if waiting for something. He flattened his ears in impatience and started speaking. "So, I know some of you've never been in a pack before. Ya see, I just recently lost mine. Humans got 'em, and uh, it's been pretty rough. Since you're all loners, I was thinkin', we could make a new one."

Molly smiled at Garth as he nudged her and walked off. "Your welcome." Her eyes looked down at Augustine, "Intriguing...." She changed into her normal wolf self and sat on the same rug as him.

"Well I'd hope so," Augustine said in a sarcastic yet flirtatious tone, his ears perking up happily. It was nice being around a few females for a change.

Lakota whimpered gently and closed her eyes. Why was this brought up so soon... Sighing she thought for a few moments. I can do this, I need to. "If we were to do that, would it be a traditional pack, with leader and all?"

"Like with an alpha and everything?" Mercie asked. She'd never been around other wolves of their kind but she had read about the less human varieity. "Isn't that usualy declared with a fight to the death or can we be democratic about it?" She figured that with this being Molly's den she might have something to say about it. She wasn't exactly looking forward to being under a stronger wolf's thumb but a pack structure and ment protection, family and probably a full-er belly at night.

"You guys are so out of the loop," Augustine said, standing up. "First off, democratically? You guys are wolves, right? Hell yes a traditional pack, and no, no one has to die. I mean, if anyone feels like fighting, bring it, but it wont be to the death or some shit. Thing is, you guys know how hard it is making it out on your own. Wolves are supposed to have a pack, its just natural."

"Hey, hey, hey" Garth said, laying on his back and kicking his legs into the air "Pick me, I'm perfect alpha material aren't I?" He let out a coughing chuckle "Cause I'd last five seconds in a fight with you. How about we do this with more sense than a USUAL wolf pack, so we don't all die in an insane attack. We chose the best wolf to be alpha..." It was the most anyone had ever heard him say, at least this lot.

Mercie didn't say anything else, Augustine was right, she was probably the most "out of the loop" one in the bunch. Being the only one left in human form made her feel vulnerable all of a sudden. She shrank down to all fours and took a position against the stove but as far into the corner against the wall as she could. She curlled up into a ball and laid her chin on the harth.

"I'd like to be a candidate for alpha." Molly said, lifted her head. She wasn't shy at all and felt that she would have no troubles leading this small group of wolves. Wasn't it she that not only found the food first and invite everyone into her den? "Err...alpha-female I guess though, huh?"

Augustine was a bit startled by this. "And you're qualified how?" he asked.

She didn't exactly want to gloat about herself, but he asked. "I'm strong, intelligent, versatile..." Molly stood up and walked towards Augustine. "I know the city quite well and let's face it..." She walked along next to his body, rubbing up against his side as she moved. "I'm adorable." She wagged her bushy tail into his face flirtatiously. Though it also did show that she wasn't intimidated by him at all.

Her actions indeed flustered Augustine to no end, and it took his a moment of two to come up with a response. "Have you ever been in a pack before?" he asked, struggling to summon his aggression back.

His ears perking up at the first real sign of a debate, Arron stood and took a step forward, still standing near Lakota, yet closer now to the ones in the middle of the room. "I don't think the alpha should be picked by who's been in a pack or who's most adorable." He glanced apologetically at Molly. "No offense. You are adorable." He looked at Augustine. "Instead of questioning her credentials, ask her something useful. Like is she capable of protecting a pack or will she be able to-" Again he shot an apologetic look at Molly. "-leave her pups if something happens. No offense meant, Molly. I'm pretty sure the strongest and most able is usually the alpha. Whoever that turns out to be, more power to them." Arron kept standing, a slight shiver running down his body as he tensed slightly for the rebuke he was likely to get from Augustine and Molly.

Mercie staired wide eyed at the three of them. This had been exactly what she'd been talking about. She could smell the air grow tense, or perhaps it was her own nerves she smelled. She did her best to stay perfectly still on the floor.

"None taken." Molly grinned at Arron, she was only joking about the whole 'adorable' thing anyway. Pups? she thought, completely forgetting the typical role of her gender in a pack. Her eyes went to Augustine. She didn't even know this guy's past at all, yet alone his abilities. What made him so perfect for the job?

"Finally, something sensible from you," Augustine said to Arron, sounding a little impressed.

Arron nodded at Molly and looked over at Augustine. "I've been in a pack environment. I've seen how an alpha needs to be. If it's a fight you want, Augustine, I'm not willing to be injured for a pack that we don't even know will stay together. My suggestion is that we spend more time together, get to know everyone's strengths." He looked at Molly now. "And their weaknesses. Then make a decision when the time comes."

"Woah... what the hell is THAT supposed to mean?" Molly raised her voice, offended that he looked at her after the word 'weakness' rolled off his furry lips.

Arron looked at Molly. Her body language told him she was offended. He was a bit confused as to why, though. "I'm sorry. But we do need to know everyone's weaknesses. We all have them..." It dawned on him why she might be offended, and he lowered his muzzle in apology. "Oh, I didn't mean you in particular. It's just polite when you address people to look at them. I didn't mean that you were weak. At least I don't think you're weak."

Lakota cleared her throat and stood. "Arron is right, we first need to get to know each other a bit better. For one, yes we all have weaknesses. And among other things we need to make sure we have a big enough place to stay, and food." She's lived on these streets for a long time, there was a cabin just outside of town by about a mile that was handed down in her family. They would all easily fit there. "Alright, since we've all pretty much decided on being a...pack...I know of a 2 bedroom 1 bath cabin just outside of town. We can use it...but we've got to be careful on going in there. And the forms we do it as. My neighbors will freak...not that I've lived in there in several years, but...I still inherited it." She looked down at the ground a bit upset and let out a deep breath. "It's up to you guys, I'm willing to return."

Mercie stayed currled up next to the stove. All this talk about weaknesses didn't encourage her to reveal any of her own. No matter how abundant they where. She would follow them if they left this place but if things got dicey she had no intention of staying.

"Alright alright. Sounds like a plan then." Molly looked at Lakota now, "Sounds better then living in this little box with 5 other wolves."

The storm picked up and the wooden door banged against it's own hinges. Thunder rumbled around them, vibrating the walls. Some water even leaked into the basement through a crack in the door, leaving a small puddle.

Garth shook his head slightly as a large drop of water landed on his skull, his hair was starting to get it's overly-fluffed look back again as he dried out beside the stove. He wouldn't mind somewhere new, and the people nearest him probably wouldn't mind it either; wet dog was bad but wet Garth was almost overpowering.

Arron nudged Lakota. "If you want to go, we can. But I think we should at least stay put tonight. We can make it through one night here. Then we'll find a better place." He circled Lakota before sitting down near the wall and stretching.

Laying down next to Arron, Lakota nodded. "Sure that's fine. But when we decide to leave here, I won't be stopping. It's a bit of a run. We can get there first and decide from there what needs to be done, unless someone else has any other ideas." Since Augustine had been the most talkative earlier she looked over at him in question.

Augustine caught her look and he shrugged. He was a nomad of sorts. He had nowhere specific to go.

From her position next to the hearth Mercie could see all of the others. She was grateful for the warmth next to the stove but she wished now that she'd picked a spot a little closer to the door. The thought of sleeping among all these strangers was nerve racking. Something in her was trying to convince her that Wolves needed other Wolves. Whatever it was it was letting her drift off to sleep and telling her not to worry. Finally exhaustion and a full belly won and she fell into a hard dreamless sleep.

Molly wandered over to the door and bent her head down. She lapped at the small puddle, washing down the meat she had recently eaten. Once quenched, she headed back, carefully walking over and around the other wolves. She settled on a corner of the old rug in the center of the room. Laying down on her stomach, she outstretched her hind legs behind her. It was quite an odd pose, but Molly always found it comfy.

Arron curled around Lakota, his head on her shoulders, his front paws under her head. He sighed contentedly, settling down into a light meditative state while watching everyone else move about.

Augustine wasn't very tired. He was too busy plotting his ascension to alpha-dom. He slid onto his stomach and watched the others. As pitifully human as he found them, they were still wolves and he felt rather protective of them.

Molly watched Augustine for a few moments, seeing that they were near one another and awake yet. Feeling a sudden itch, she reached her head back and started to bite at the skin on her spine. Unable to reach it, she rolled over onto her back and shifted from side to side with her front paws up and relaxed. Her reddish-brown fur quickly became ruffled in the rug.

Lakota sighed heavily and watched Augustine. She had a feeling he may just be in it for the power trip. She be damned if she let these wolves be commanded by an over eager, power craving pup! Maybe it was time for her to step into her true role as a leader. With her tribe she had been next in line to lead. She had been so excited at the time, and ready. But when the tragedy happened, it left her thoughts, until this moment. Glancing up and Arron she smiled softly, trying to hold back a giggled. She was growing quite attached to the wolf. Maybe her healing process had finally begun.

With a yawn, Arron snuggled up against Lakota. He was exhausted enough to not care what the other wolves were doing. It was also more relaxing to have someone to share warmth with rather than sleeping on the wet, cold ground as he had for too long.

Garth was settled on his back still, a grey poof ball resting beside the fire. He was warm, he'd just eaten and there were people around him that weren't treating him badly; right now he was vaguely happy. Yawning slightly he twitched his paws in the air and began to fall asleep.
