Scott Lynch: The Lies of Locke Lamora review
I was trying to find some new fantasy tales I hadn't read from the youth section in the library and picked this book.
It was brilliant.
The Lies of Locke Lamora is the first book by Scott Lynch. It's a story setting in fictional place called city of Camorr which reminds of ancient Venice. The protagonist is a young man named Locke Lamora who belongs to a group called Gentleman bastards. Locke and his friends are thieves and con artists who steal from the rich and enjoy the thrill of adventure and putting together an impossible plot.
But there is someone in the city, someone called the Grey King, who is messing up with the criminal community of Camorr.
The narration of Lynch is really vivid and every other chapter goes back in time to the days Locke was a young boy, or tells about the history of Camorr, and the other chapters concentrate on the current events and the thickening plot.
The characters are really interesting and Lynch takes some quality time to describe everyone and their beautiful costumes. The book has quite a lot of violence too, which is why I wondered of its location on the youth section. But the from time to time graphic violence didn't bother me, because it wasn't there for the sake of it, but it had a point.
The Lies of Locke Lamora is a modern fantasy classic which I recommend to everyone. I can't wait for reading the sequel.
