There are two Sci-Fi series that I am a HUGE fan of; “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Harry Potter.” I’ve pretty much learned to embrace my inner geek at this point, which is probably healthy, given the sheer number of action figures that I have of characters from these series. However, when it comes to action figures in my collection, I’m pretty sure that the numbers are in favor of the “Harry Potter” figures, if only slightly so. One of the less important but still fun action figures in my “Harry Potter” set is the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure.

The Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure is a detailed replica of one of the Dementors of Azkaban from the “Harry Potter” world. In that world, Dementors guard the Wizard Prison (Azkaban). These Dementors do their jobs well as they are literally soul-sucking beings. Not dissimilar to the RingWraiths of the “Lord of the Rings”-verse, Dementors are heavily cloaked, and generally only their hands are seen in the films.

The Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure is a great; if not perfect sculpt of a Dementor from the “Harry Potter”-verse. As Dementors essentially look like rotting, skeletal corpses that are near-completely cloaked in threadbare, torn robes, I initially didn’t expect that the sculpt would be any good. However, Neca did an incredibly good job in capturing the ethereal sense of the Dementor, especially in the way that the Dementor’s cloak seems to float around its “body” in all the right parts, giving it the appearance of floating, which is accurate as Dementors don’t actually walk. The ethereal feel of the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure is helped along by the base that the Dementor comes with, which includes a clear plastic stand. This allows the Dementor to appear to be gliding through the air above the heads of other figures. The base that is featured with the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure places the Dementor in The Prisoner of Azkaban storyline, as the base is obviously a recreation of the scene near the lake in the forest where Harry Potter accurately produces a Patronus in order to save himself and Sirius Black.

Not only is the cloak on the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure near-perfect, but the hands on the Dementor are also pretty superb, capturing the death-like quality of them almost precisely. In fact, the colors used on the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure truly bring the figure to life and help to make it a very frightening rendering of the terrifying creatures that only Witches and Wizards can see.

As far as articulation goes, the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure definitely does not have the best in this series. However, fans of the “Harry Potter”-verse are given to believe that dementors never use their legs (if they even have them!), and instead only ever move parts like their arms, hands and heads. Therefore, it is not terribly unacceptable that the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure only has points of articulation at its neck, shoulders and wrists. Given that these creatures never do much in the way of posing, there is really no need to ever pose them! In my display case, the dementors simply glide above the heads of other characters in a menacing fashion, just as they do in the books/films.

I do recommend the Neca Harry Potter Series 1 Dementor 7 Inch Figure for “Harry Potter” fans and collectors. In fact, I recommend that fans purchase several of these Dementor figures for their play and/or display, as Dementors tend to travel in packs! Happy playing!
