Sirena; Donna Jo Napoli review

This book was wonderful, if you ask me. The author uses simple words and a flowing sentence structure, which fits the story well (since it is about mermaids, also known as sirens). This book uses a new take on Greek mythology, and I thought was rather touching and moving. It's the story of a mermaid, Sirena, who must 9along with her sisters), lure unsuspecting sailors to their rock so that they may make love, thus making the mermaids immortal. Sirena finds something wrong with this, and goes off on her own. Coming upon an island, she finds a man, and finds love.
I won't describe much more as to give the story away, but I really enjoyed this book, and found it to be a delight.

2010-08-30 [windowframe]: Would you say this was romance?

2010-08-31 [Akayume]: I would. Either that or fiction.

2010-08-31 [windowframe]: Yes, well, a romance is either going to be fiction or non-fiction if it's a true story, isn't it. Everything in sci-fi, fantasy, horror and crime could also be in fiction :P But if the whole thing is about love and whether they get the boy/girl etc. then it's romance. *avoids the rant about how stupid genre classifications are anyway*

2010-08-31 [Akayume]: Sorry. o__o I suppose so, but it's not a classic "romance" novel. Like, with the big muscly guys on the cover and the super hot chicks. XD

2010-08-31 [windowframe]: Pfffft. They're not classic romance novels, they're just... I don't even know what. Mills & Boons has it's own special category. :P Actually, I'm pretty sure they're just erotica. <_<

2010-09-02 [Akayume]: Yeahhh. :( I don't read those. I look at them and shudder. I filled through one once and the writing was terrible!

2010-09-02 [windowframe]: I've not even flipped through one. The cover and the blurb, plus the occasional review of them I read on book blogs, is enough to convince me I would hate it. :P

2010-09-03 [Akayume]: It is horrendous. XD
