Sky-Chaser setting

The Sky-Chaser is my only true fantasy story, and this page details the setting of its world.

[Veltzeh]

The layered world

The layers of the world are separated by thin layers of extreme magical and physical spirit-winds who do not allow anything to pass through. Passable gaps only form in this wind barrier approximately once in a century, but even then it takes an excess of strength and cunning or exceptional circumstances to pass through.

The lowest layer

The first, lowest layer is where humans are able to live. Several other races also live on the lowest layer.

Map of the lowest layer
— Non-refined at places.

— The Harhalatu mountain range changes constantly and is never quite the same. Its approximate place remains the same, for it never really grows, shrinks or moves as a whole. Several natural and logic-defying wonders can be found there. Only one remotely useful map of it exists, made by the world's best navigator, and according to rumor it can only be found at the highest spot of the world. The Navigator is the only person to have reportedly crossed the Harhalatu mountain range – and several times. One of very few people who has been assumed to have crossed Harhalatu was Galon, the ancient founder of Galon's Forest Plains.
— Galon's Forest Plains are plains of forests with fairly low hills. It is largely uninhabited because all its peoples (nearly all of them humans) were killed, their magical energy taken.
— Coach Desert is a more or less barren wasteland. It is very long but not deep – one could easily walk across it in a day and reach the Desert Sea.
— The Desert Sea is not a very large sea. People who cross it from the side opposite to Coach Desert are discouraged at seeing the wasteland and few travelers from across the sea reach Galon's Forest Plains. There are no signs at the shore pointing people the right way to Galon's Forest Plains, because long in the past the inhabitants of Galon's Forest Plains feared war and invasion from across the sea.
— The Dual Flatlands is an interesting land of desert and swamp. The whole area is blotted with damp swamp and dry desert, and incredibly the land types do not seem to mix. What is uniform about it is its flatness and heat.
— The High Scene is a land of chasms and rock. As the name implies, it is high, so high that people from lower lands have difficulty breathing there. It is full of intricate and impossible canyons and ridiculously deep chasms. Not many trees grow there, and what little thrives there is usually small and short.

The map above details only a small part of the layer; more land and seas remain to be explored and detailed.

The second layer

The second layer's air is toxic to humans. Most of this layer consists of smallish floating islands and great amounts of seemingly empty space. Creatures live within the clouds.

The other layers

No information of the other layers exists.

Magic of the world

Each creature and individual is born with a set amount of magical energy in it. Mages can use this energy as spells or take it from other creatures. Any forcibly taken energies must be used immediately, for only freely given energies are able to be stored. If a creature runs out of magical energy, it dies.

Usually magical energies are guarded with great vigor and mages are greedy and very untrustworthy.

Creatures of the world

All creatures are epicenes unless said otherwise.

Humans are not able to control the magical energies and therefore can never be mages.

Minfers are a very short and dark-skinned people, most of whom are either very stocky or very thin. They have superior mining and building skills and live near mountains.

Anoursas are a centaur-like vegetarian race. They live in fertile valleys.

Illeas are tall, slender, black-haired and almost white-skinned, but otherwise resemble humans. They are serious vegetarians and seem to treat all animals as their equals.

Geins are similar to illeas, but have blue hair and are not as tall.

— some trees are "sentient" or have/are spirits
— some (all?) mountains have/are spirits
— hipera is a horse-like animal tamed by humans (at least)

Individuals

Galon was a human who lived a long time ago in the past. Ey founded the first human village in Galon's Forest Plains. The legend has it that ey crossed the mountains of Harhalatu, but this might be exaggeration because no one outside of Galon's Forest Plains and the close-by regions of Harhalatu (and some in High Scene) has heard of em before the founding of Galon's Forest Plains.

Agon the Navigator was a young human who left Galon's Forest Plains, traveled Harhalatu for years, crossing it several times and made the only map of Harhalatu worth even looking at. The last anyone saw of em was right before the demise of the people of Galon's Forest Plains. However, most believe that ey was not there to share eir countryfolk's fate – indeed, eir body was never found.

Valorior Ecthelion is a mage who lives in the highest part of the Scope of Skies and Starfallen Lands, or somewhere around there, for one can never really tell when it comes to mages.
