T-Shirt Shrug Project (cut out + keep) review

This is a project my boy sent me to try out, and I was pretty excited to get it going. It seemed simple enough (and it is, although there was a slight hitch in the get-a-long), and I was eager, so I bought myself a shirt from my work (a local thrift store). I think this was my first mistake.

The fabric is very stretchy, and I really only got the shirt because it had cute sleeves (I'll take pictures and upload them eventually, I promise), and I had never sewn with that kind of fabric before, but I thought What the hell? and used it anyway.

This made it very hard to sew. You have to fold over and allow enough room to feed your string (or in my case scarf, so mine looks more like this version: http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/tshirt_shrug/versions/14) through. I had to super stretch the material flat on both ends and pull it through (and I only figured this out after I was half done, so I had to pull the stitches out and start fresh).

If you make this and use a springy fabric like myself, use a zigzag stitch. The zigzag has more give and stretches a little itself, and it worked sooo much better with a zigzag than the straight stitch (and if you used a legit t-shirt, ignore this).

Also, it's a little hard to cut around the shoulders/neck, and the tutorial really doesn't explain this well. It was also hard to sew around there for me, but I attribute that to the fabric type.

But, in the end...

I have a beautiful and super cute shrug! I don't regret a single moment of sewing. I love it, it's super cute, and I'm quite proud of myself. It's not too hard, so I'll say that even a beginner who at least knows how to cut/pin/work a sewing machine could do this (I guess you could do it by hand, but that's a loooot of sewing).
