Interview with [Moonknight]

As he said it best "May today be a historical event? May it be? I'm not sure, but there are chances. May today be the first day that an elftowner interviewed another for a radio programm on a national radio? I think there are good chances for that."

Here in ET, regardless of the husbands and wives, girfriends and boyfriends, roomates, classmates, workmates or even the ET and EW Meet up etc. etc., sometimes we lose sight of the fact that these are real people that touch each other lives as we scroll through our member updates and new diary entries of people worldwide. On the rare occasions, these people that are cross country, over seas, or sometimes even just an hour or two away, actually grasp the opportunity to open the door and meet one another, and on those occasions when that happens it opens our eyes to really appreciate just how fantastic and real this community is. On this occasion it happened to be The Herald's own Patricio, aka [All_Most PUNK], who was lucky enough to not only meet, but interview fellow ETer Santiago, aka [Moonknight], when [Moonknight] and his band mate joined PUNK in his studio day job for an interview about their Band for PUNK's radio programe, which he was kind enough to share with all of us -- opening up both himself and [Moonknight] into a peak of their real lives, breaking out of their ET shells to see the true people behind the Houses. Perhaps this is a historical event, perhaps one day it will be a common and regular thing for ETers to bump into one another, work side by side and cross seas and countries to collaborate each other and open ET up to a growing and bonding community. Or perhaps this will simply open your own minds into seeing the real people in ET, not just a name and face behind a screen, and perhaps one day you may meet your own fellow ETer that may open someone elses eyes and mind.

Patricio: The guys are already with us… while they enter, get comfortable, drink some soda and that kind of things that do young people these days…

Patricio:We continue here in “Estación Argentina” and we are with the Cadmus guys. Introduce yourselves!

Santiago: Hi, I’m Santiago
Turu: Nicolás
Patricio: Sure?
Santiago: Yes, yes...
Turu: For the moment...
Patricio:You won’t change? Have you analyzed it?
Tutu: No, no…

Here there’s some sound problems (I think they had to change the tape) and…

Patricio: … open mic.
Turu: We started 3 or 4 years ago, we meet studying and we started playing for fun and slowly we realized that the music was good and that we also had feeling to play. I mean, It’s not the same playing with somebody with whom you only get together to play than with somebody…
Patricio: Somebody with whom you have some skin.
Turu: Yes, yes…
Santi: There’s chemistry and a creative energy that is interesting, therefore… And since we get along very well, we became good friends…
Turu: Right.
Santi: … we kept going with it.
Patricio:What’s the formation?
Santi: Well, initially we were 3, 3 friends, we meet studying multimedia design and… well… the third member whose name is Sebastián is now the singer in another band so… He’s a guest, comes and goes, records some things for us.
Turu: Yes, yes, but it was pretty much an agreement…
Patricio:Good!
Turu: Yes, without any fights, because Sebastián is very talented, he sings well, plays the guitar well, is a good composer, so…
Patricio: Yeah, ok, but maybe if you said that there was a fight, we’d get some more audicence.
*some laughs*
Turu: Yeah, well…
Santi: It’s very common in this kind of things. But between us everything’s ok.
Turu: What happens is that we actually hate each other.
Patricio: Oh, there it is, I understand
*some laughs*
Patricio: Che, and what does each one of you do?
Santi: Well, Nicolas… who is the other, not me, I’m Santiago… plays guitar and I’m singer and play keayboard… And well, you tell him.
Turu: Yes, we compose… But did you refer to music or…?
Patricio: I don’t know… Is there anything else you want to talk about?
Santi: Life…
Turu: What do I know? I don’t know *laughs*
Santi: If we could just make music… well, it would be great.
Patricio: For the moment, let’s talk about the music. Later we’ll have the moment for personal revelations.
Santi: Personal, ok, ok. Well, as I was saying I’m the vocalist, keyboard player and I improvise horribly in guitar, sometimes, but ok…
*laughs*
Santi: He’s the one who is good with the guitar.
Patricio: Ok, I see you have every position well defined. Are you playing these days? So we can advertise it.
Santi: We’ll play live, for the moment, the first week of December. It would be a semi-acoustic.
Turu: Yes, that, it won’t be rock rock, electric, but an unplugged… It’s more a semi-acoustic.

Patricio: What a voice!
Santi: Yes.
Patricio: *something impossible to understand and then…* I only knew Santiago through Internet so far, it’s the first time we see each other personally. It’s a confidence that we are sharing like this, so it’s not such a confidence.
*laughs*
Patricio: What are the influences, where does the music come from and we’ll leave for the second part a very important question that we have… a discussion we’ve been having for the last 5 programs with him.
Santi: This is something very ample. We both like lots of music styles and different artists.
Patricio: Of course.
Santi: For example, the first album I bought was an Iron Maiden one but, strangely, my friends laughed at me because I also had some by Cindy Lauper… A big mix… Everything that has melodic elements, things from the 80s, 80s rock, I like that a lot.
Turu: Actually, what is interesting is that when we met, that we start asking each other “what do you listen to?” and such, he had a clear 80s influence and I… I have it too, but it goes more towards the 70s and 90s. I mean, they are all different decades and still, at the moment of playing…
Santi: Everything is very compatible, it all sounds very well together.
Turu: It was never a matter of “Well, let’s play like this”
Santi: He introduced me a lot to blues. This boy likes blues a lot. I started to like it a lot…
Patricio: Did that change a lot the way you musicalize?
Santi: No, it (amplió) my taste. Now I like everything that has some blues. I have it in my head.
Patricio: I was going to tell you that I noted a strong Almafuerte influence, but if you don’t want to accept it…
Santi: Sebastián is more of a metalhead. He sings in a heavy metal band now.
Patricio: Oh, ok, you have a little bit of everything.
Santi: There are a lot of heavy guitars that were added by Sebastián. I love it too. I’m the 80s guy of the three.
Patricio: Ok. The lyrics? You write them…
Santi: Well, that’s me, because I’m one with the better English, but well… many of the ideas are brought by Nicolás too and then I work them.
Turu: Just like with the music it’s talking… estee… in the moments when we say “Let’s see, there’s a new song, it is more or less like this…”
Santi: The typical question is: “what does it transmit to you?” Or if I have an image in my head and we try to put music to it and then… Lyrics are always the last thing. You have to think more. Music comes all by itself.
Patricio: Why in English?
Santi: Personally, I feel more comfortable working in English. Plus you get to a bigger range of people. It’s more universal, maybe. And then for different reasons.
Turu: Yes, plus there are puns and resignifications that can be done in English… in Spanish they can be done too…
Santi: It’s a little more complicated.
Turu: … but in English… (something I can’t understand)
Patricio: Ok.
Turu: Actually, we from the beginning said “ok, the lyrics in English” and later friends and that listened to us asked “Che, why is it in English?”
Patricio: Well, it is a question that comes to you. Ï’m not questioning it, though.
Santi: Some people do.
Patricio: He knows… Santiago knows that half the songs I make are in English and half of them are in Spanish, but…
Santi: Yes, yes, yes.
Patricio: He’s been unlucky enough to hear me. Estee… But we’ll go to another song so we’ll have some more time to talk later. What are we listening to and what will we listen to next?
Santi: What you heard before was “Talk”.
Patricio: And now?
Santi: “Every night with you” which is a song… A semi-ballad, let’s say, because it has a loud part too.
Patricio: Let’s go with that.

Patricio: I don’t know. What do you want me to tell you, Mauro? Nothing? Let’s go to the song then.

Turu: That’s where you pretend to be a speaker.
Patricio: Yes, because…
Santi: You do it well.
Patricio: … I speak too fast. So one day they said, almost slapping me, “when you say the phone number and the mail, slow down because people can’t write it down”. So I have to slow down. Heeere we have a discussion with Javier, a conversation that we have been proposing to all the musicians that visit us, and to a couple no musicians too, since they we interested, about what is the song.
Santi: Oh, god!
Patricio: It’s not a discussion like… But a couple of opinions we want. Because, I use always the same example, in many well known rock magazines you can find albums reviews and you can see the sentence “they went back to making songs”. Which makes me imagine that the previous albums were of… I don’t know… hamburgers or something like that. What’s the song, what isn’t the song and how is the perfect song?
Santi: Well, this is totally relative.
Patricio: No, of course. For you.
Santi: Besides, it may refer to a melodic, conceptual or sound matter. Conceptually, it is normally an experience that you have in life. Me, personally, if I have an idea or something that happened to me, that inspires me to write a song. Music is something very emotional. Normally it’s an emotion you have… You had a relation with a girl, it went well, it went bad, that gives you an idea… Well, I’m very cheesy; it’s normally about a girl, but…
Turu: The song is a mood and a sensation.
Santi: Right, right.
Patricio: And what…?
Turu: Maybe when they say “they went back to the song”… It’s so generic to say “they went back to the song”… In any case it could be said “they went back to playing something that they felt”.
Santi: Right.
Patricio: It’s a new angle.
Turu: Because if you make two or three albums and the fourth you make by pure momentum…
Santi: Compromise. That happens a lot.
Turu: For money or whatever, then when they get reunited, after years, rehabs and I don’t know what else, they went back to the song, yes.
Patricio: Understood. It’s an angle that maybe we hadn’t seen so far. Something new.
Santi: What happens is that in the level of the critics, when a critic analyzes something that maybe the guy doesn’t understand, doesn’t have the feeling, they see it in a structural or musical level only. That depends on what each one refers to.
Turu: In any case, I wish they saw it that way because
Santi: It’s very cold sometimes.
Turu: (Something I can’t understand)… it’s sounding now that wouldn’t sound if it was a thing strictly…
Santi: It’s a commercial thing, let’s see, how the critic sees it normally.
Patricio: What albums have you listened to lately that you have liked, which bands would you recommend?
Santi: He’s more up to date with music than me.
Patricio: Yes, I can see that he has a Hendrix t-shirt that is very modern.
Santi:Everything depends too of the music style. I’m listening a lot to a progressive band, not heavy, very melodic… maybe it’s more complex music… the name is Enchant. I love that band. That’s more modern. If not, I listen to a lot of 80s music. I don’t know… What have you been listening to?
Turu: Look…
Santi: (Nombre de artista) That’s great. He gave me some (Nombre de artista)
Turu: That’s…
Santi: That’s older.
Turu: It’s hard to find (nombre de artista)
Patricio: You don’t even want us to try?
Turu: No, search for it. I hope you find it and give it to me.
Patricio: Ah, ok.
Santi: That’s jazz, very cool.
Turu: Do you want to listen to something new? Listen to music from the 70s, the 60s if you can too. You’ll discover a lot more of music than what you may find today in…
Santi: Yes, for me today everything is a block of very similar things.
Turu: Nah, there are some things that are good.
Santi: There’s always something, but what’s very commercial sounds everything alike.
Javier: There are even tributes to bands from the 70s in modern bands, it’s like a new current.
Turu: And there are also those “Jazz and 80s”, “Jazz and 90s”, “Jazz and Stones” and…
Patricio: What do you think of those?
Turu: … all those things. Eh, well, I don’t know, they are ok.
Patricio: Ah.
Turu: I like them.
Santi: Besides, you are seeing it from a different perspective and it’s interesting to listen to things made in a different way than what you are used to.
Patricio: Ah, no, because I, two weeks ago, affirmed that the creator of those things was more or less in the same level as Hitler, but ok, you go ahead…
(Some laughs)
Patricio: …it’s all right.
Turu: Nah, but y’know, truth be told if it will be in the background…
Patricio: No, of course, it’s not like I would kill somebody for listening to it.
Santi: No, I don’t sit down and listen to that…
Turu: And when they start doing “Jazz and 80s Vol II”, “Jazz and 80s Vol. III”… well, enough is enough.
Patricio: Right.
Turu: Do one decade and that’s it.
Santi: You play it to study or relax. I won’t say study because I’m lazy and don’t study, but…
Patricio: Well, anything you want to confess? Wait, you already did it!
Santi: No, not for the moment.
Patricio: How do see the future, what do you plan to do, accomplish at short, medium, long term? As a band and as human beings, if you want.
Santi: As human beings, being better every day… I don’t know what can I say.
Turu: Yes, actually. As human being and at musical level, that both things… for me, both things go together. Esteee… Having the luck to be able to keep playing from my feelings, from what happens to us and not having to start playing for compromise.
Santi: If I could live of music, I’d be happy. But it’s an ideal pretty hard to reach.
Patricio: Yes, I image. Kids, sadly, I have to close. It’s 3 pm already. I thank you for coming.
