I tried working with both 2d anime styles and 3d realistic styles before, but this time I tried using a hybrid anime-realism style by doing anime lines and coloring them in realistically. Result: a very feminine bishie-ish guy. This is also the first time I've really incorporated a working background into a drawing, so I'd like to know how to really get the character into the scene, with appropriate lighting and etc, and not like it was pasted on. I'm also playing around with a bunch of ideas for the background I can't decide on. My proportioning is pretty bad as well, and I'd like some heavy critique to make this piece better.

So to lay things out straight, here are the issues I would like help on:

1. Making the character more masculine (Yes, it's an elf, yes, I want a slightly bishie anime feel to it, but no, it's not a girl)
2. Proportions (Preserving the slight build of an elf while adding some muscle)
3. Lighting (How to make the character blend into the background and not stay pasted on like a sticker)
4. Ideas for scenery (I'm trying to figure out what I want in the background, and I've played with some that I think I like, one being an ocean with ships and seagulls in the sky, another being wildflowers in a field with petals floating around. Can't decide...)
5. Any other advice

2010-09-09 [de Morte]: A quick thing about making your character more masculine would be to lower the waistline of the jacket, having it so far up is a thing many women use to show off their waistline.
Bringing color in from your background can be a bit tricky because it depends on the directional light. If you are using photoshop, take a background color (Alt+mouse over color) and set it to a lower opacity and try to see where light would reflect onto.

2010-09-11 [Kanon]: Thanks for the tips! About the waistline though... It really was because of the design of the clothing itself. I based this off Korean traditional clothing, known as a hanbok. It usually has a tie at the waist, as well as most of the other features you can see here.
And I'll try the transparency idea, thank you~ I have GIMP though... I'll see if it works
