The Guardian Vesuvius: Prolouge
"When we are young, we are full of love. We so eagerly open our hearts to the world and the people in it, unaware of what it means to hold something in that heart, or how it feels to have to let that something go. Ignorance is not always bliss - often it only hides the warning signs to a terrible pain. In youth we are unable to understand the workings of the world, we assume that which we love will stay with us forever and continue to love us in return."
"What would become of a person if they learnt too soon that thier love is a liability, that to allow people into thier heart is to invite heartbreak itself? Just as people are unique, so is a person's reaction to harsh reality. Children become upset when they realise the tales of magic they so fondly believed were never anything but fabrication, but if a child realises at this fragile stage that people kill one another, that those you love will eventually leave forever, that life can leave a person broken with nothing to live for, that there comes a time when the innocence of childhood gives way to a life that is either a victim or perpetrator of wilful harm to another... there would undoubtedly be serious change. For better or worse, for we are all unique"
"They say that perhaps the easiest person to love in all the world is yourself, that in loving yourself only then are you able to love others. However what if you truly are something you hate? Perhaps the reason a person hates themself is that they see something abhorrent in themself that they can't see in the people they love. Or perhaps that they feel the people they love see something in them that they doesn't think exists, and they feel like a liar, a facade."
"But perhaps one of the most tragic reasons is the feeling that they are not enough, a loathing for the self born of a past of failure, a past of always falling short, always being unable to do what was needed. The more they fail, the more they believe that they always will. It is a wicked cycle that entraps a person into avoiding opportunities and obligation in fear of that failure and disappointing others, a wicked cycle that gives birth to even deeper hatred for themself because they never became anything they wanted to be, or that others hoped they'd become. Soon enough the overwhelming, nautious sense of what they aren't hides the truth of what they are, so focused on what they didn't become, that they wanted so much, that they never stop to think about what they actually became."
"They becomes consumed by a self hatred that prevents aspiration... it is ever deepening, for each moment spent in regret is another reason to hate themself. A scar of inadequacy, whether it is real or not, runs clear as day to them right across the face that they find harder and harder to bear every time they see it, yet it is what they don't see that repulses them most... either because it is hidden away, or it simply isn't there."
"This makes it all too easy for them to love other people, which begets only more pain and failure. It is there nature to seek something that they can love - something of incredible worth that can make them smile, something that to them shines with brilliance and beauty, stealing thier mind away from the dreadful person they sees in themself. A person like this is so easy to recognise yet so hard to find.... so despicable yet so desperately needing to be loved... so oblivious yet so sure"
"This is the incredible story of one such person, trapped in a savage cage of overwhelming affection for someone. His mind is branded with the idea that this love could never be. Unable to see good qualities within himself, he cannot find grounds to believe this love is worth pursuing, yet so strong is his heart he cannot ignore it."
"A mysterious person is about to enter his lifeā¦ and one by one, his priorities and preconceptions will change..."
