THE SUNKEN ISLE OF ATLANTIS

Beside their pretty palace by the sea,
made of crystal and stone,
stood a bright beam of vibrant energy
that became a beacon to their throne.

Spirit of Atlantis - by Duane K. McCullough

Many, many years ago, there was an island. It was a huge island, slightly larger than Great Brittain, and the Fey owned it. It was known across all the lands, for it was the largest gate between Faërie and the mortal world, and the island was called Atlantis.

The fey thrived on Atlantis. The whole island was one big city, but it was so integrated with nature that nobody was ever more than five minutes from a meadow. Its houses were mostly of purest marble and bedecked by silver. It was the seat of power in fey society, almost rivalling Tir-Na-Nog. Fey of all houses dwelt there, but those who controlled the isle were the house ----

Now, since Atlantis was the peak of Seelie beauty and craftmanship, it was the primary target when the Unseelie mobilized for open warfare. They spent years building a large enough force, and then they launched their attack without warning or provocation. The battles were fierce and bloody, with enemies on all sides of the huge and once-peaceful island. The Unseelie weren't alone either, for many of the competing royal houses among the Seelie saw this as their chance to gain control over Atlantis.

And so was Atlantis not only ruthlessly attacked, but also betrayed. Dragons flew overhead and fired their sulphuric breath at the forces moving below, while elfin sorcerers wove lethal enchantments to fling towards the enemy. Ferocious monsters of the depth rose up to aid both sides, and the skies began to darken ominously.

The sun set on the first day of the Battle for Atlantis, but none of the fey realized it. The fog of war blotted out the sun, along with the smoke of burning bodies and the haze of unleashed magics. That night the fighting ended, not because an one side won, but because a catastrophe happened. All the magic and might wrought upon the hapless island triggered an enormous cataclysm, and in a gigantic wave the ocean rose and swallowed Atlantis forever.

At least, that's how the mortals saw it. It's true that a terrible storm happened, and that the island sank beneath the cruel and relentless wave, but it still exists. The cataclysm severed its connection with the mortal realm, so that it no longer functioned as a gateway. It can still be found in Faërie, out in the turqoise sea, where they still strive to rebuild it to its former glory.

But its importance as a travelling point and a sanctum is gone forever, and with that lost it is gradually fading away. Fewer fey come there each year, and some fear that it will eventually become a city of uninhabited ruins, and that at last only a memory will remain of the city of legends.
