The Life of an Angel
Tales of Symphonia
He watched with growing regret and sorrow as the combined worlds of Tethe’alla and Sylvarant fell away beneath his feet. His eyes, soft, dark, and full of melancholy watched as everything that had ever meant anything to him slipped passed his fingers. Memories….so many memories he had cherished and hated were left behind in a swirling vortex of resentment. So many friendships forged and broken, so many emotions, so many years….
For the first time, in four thousand years, Kratos felt tears sliding down his face. He reached up, confused, to touch them. He had forgotten their name….forgotte
n what it was like to cry… And, to his surprise, he didn’t even know he could shed these sorrowful crystals. He had thought in his transformation into an angel he had lost his ability to cry…to feel emotions. Had it been his own mind, numb from his loss of humanity that made him believe so?
Shaking he let his trembling hands fall from his face, pressing his hands against the glass transporter, and staring intently down at the quickly fading world. He felt his heart lurch. His son… he had left his son there… The only physical memento of his love, Anna. His body twitched involuntarily and he felt his knees buckling beneath him. He pressed his forehead against the glass, shaking his head.
He didn’t want this…damned to a life of immortality… Alone to watch with fading eyes a blossoming world full of life. He shook his head again, this time more forcefully.
But he deserved it. To live eternity warped in his own sorrows and regrets… To know that his mistakes could never be corrected… To know that his life was meaningless… No… not meaningless… He chided himself coldly. A life of ruefulness, a life of loneliness….the life of a traitor.
His laugh was hollow, even though his body ached from his trembling, and his eyes hurt from the unending tears.
The life of an angel.
