The Poky Little Puppy Review
I first discovered my love for reading when I was a young girl, and back in those days, the Little Golden Books were my absolute favorites. While I enjoyed almost every book in the line, the Poky Little Puppy was always the one I liked best of all.
Sometimes it’s fun to back through boxes of things from Childhood years and to rediscover objects that once were important to us. In doing so a few years ago, I came across my dog-eared copy of The Poky Puppy, and I quickly and eagerly read through it right then and there.
Written by Janette Sebring Lowery, The Poky Little Puppy tells the story of a family of dogs, which includes five playful puppies and a strict mother dog. All of the puppies enjoy digging, so much so that they frequently dig holes beneath their fence in order to escape from their yard and to take walks in the great, big world. In their adventures, the puppies walk through a field, down a path, over a bridge, across a meadow and more. Each of the puppies is excited to be experiencing and discovering the world they never knew until this day. However, each time that the puppies come to the top of a rise, they can’t help but to note that the Poky Little Puppy has disappeared.
That’s when the other pups begin searching for the Poky Little Puppy. They look all around the rise for him, and encounter caterpillars, lizards, spiders (ew!), frogs and more, but never happen to find their brother until they reach the bottom of the hill. The Poky Little Puppy is so interested in all of the new things that he is encountering, that he keeps getting distracted and forgets to stay with the other puppies. Things like rice pudding and strawberries keep the Poky Little Puppy occupied throughout the story.
After reuniting with the Poky Little Puppy, all of the puppies go home for supper, where their mother berates them for digging up the yard and puts them to bed without dinner. However, when this happens, the Poky Little Puppy gets up after his brothers and sisters are fast asleep, and he eats up all of the dessert that was meant for all of the puppies to share!
After that, even more adventures are had! The puppies sneak off again, and who knows what they will encounter this time! With Mother Dog be angry when they return? Do they get sent to bed without supper? Most importantly, does the Poky Little Puppy eat up everyone’s dessert? One has to read the book to find out what happens next in The Poky Little Puppy!
I have always loved the story of the Poky Little Puppy for several reasons. The fact that the book is an incredibly well-loved children’s classic aside, the illustrations are beautiful, and I always liked the ending of the book (which I will not reveal here!). Additionally, I’ve been an animal-lover since I was very young, and I’m sure that the story of the Poky Little Puppy helped me on my way into becoming the animal enthusiast that I am today.
I highly recommend this book to everyone with a young child. The pictures are captivating, though they are more cartoonish than they are realistic. The story is solid as well as amusing, kids love to learn what the Poky Little Puppy is going to get himself into next!
