The Secret Hour; Scott Westerfeld review

This is the first book in the Midnighters series by Mr. Westerfeld, and it's very interesting indeed.

Jessica Day moves to Bixby, Oklahoma and finds that the tiny dust bowl community is not all that quiet. There's an extra hour at midnight, and she and five others can experience it. The problem is that so can the Darklings - ancient creatures that hunt and feed on humans.

This is a good book, but lacks the adventure and excitement that the second book has. Overall, however, this is a good book to read.

2010-09-06 [windowframe]: I read this on the wikipedia synopsis: " They also explain that each Midnighter has a special power - Dess is a polymath(someone who has extraordinary math skills), Rex is a Seer(someone who can see things touched by previous midnighters and slithers etc) and Melissa is a mindcaster(meaning she can travel through minds and locate midnighters). They don't know what Jessica's power is, except that it isn't the same as any of theirs."

Pleaaase tell me the polymath thing is a joke, or that whoever wrote the synopsis has just... got it wrong. <_<

2010-09-07 [Akayume]: Yes, there is a polymath.

2010-09-07 [windowframe]: But is she *actually* a polymath, or just good at maths? XP

2010-09-08 [Akayume]: Uhhmmm.... She's well studied in a lot of areas of math, but other than that she's just good at math. XD

2010-09-08 [windowframe]: ... And does he actually call her a polymath in the book just for that? O_o And there's no chance they're... joking? X_X

2010-09-12 [Akayume]: Yes, that's why he calls her that. DX

2010-09-12 [windowframe]: *headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**headdesk*

2010-09-12 [Akayume]: I know, I know. Just because there's "math" in the word doesn't mean it's about "math". XD
