At the Patin Society Building:

Afternoon sunlight filtered in through the tall windows that framed the Godmothers office. The room was elaborate but in a sophisticated way, with dark woods and comfortable looking furniture in several shades of blue and creamy gold. If there was one thing to be said about the Godmother it was that she had good taste. The main feature of the room was a large mahogany desk that sat in front of a tapestry sized mirror, the edges of which were gilded in gold.

Behind the desk sat Susan, her head bent over some paper work regarding the upcoming mayoral campaign. Every now that then her pen would scratch across the paper, making a note here and there. When she had finished, she put her pen down and reached for the tea pot that sat next to her on a silver tray.

"Boots." She said as she pour herself a cup.

From across the room a yawn could be heard as a small tawny haired man uncurled himself from the window seat. Getting up he stretched and then sauntered over to the desk.

Finishing fixing her tea, Susan took a sip and then set the cup down. Reaching into a desk drawer she pulled out a yellow envelop and handed it to Boots. "I want you to pay a visit to our Wolfe friend. The details and money are inside the envelop."

Boots took it from her and after a quick glance slipped it into an inside coat pocket. "He'll probably want extra. He always does."

"It's been covered. Now go." Susan said picking up her teacup and taking another sip.

"Alright." And with that Boots left the room, heading towards the east side.

Finishing off her tea Susan set the cup down and reached for the files that Boots had brought back from his last mission. She began to flip through the the pages lazily.

Far from the Godmother, although in the same building, Ella sat on her bed, restlessly brushing her hair. She hadn't gotten a job that day, although at times she would be warned at the last minute. She could go out and go shopping, but for whatever reason, Ella didn't feel like it. She just stared intensely at the wall as her comb passed through her untangled, shining hair for what was probably the hundredth time.

Boots' taxi pulled up outside the Patin building and he hopped out. Going inside he headed up the stairs moving towards he rooms. As he walked down the hallway he passed Ella's open door, noticed her inside, and stopped to chat for a moment. After all, he had nothing better to do.

"You know, if you brush your hair to much it will fall out." He purred, leaning against the door frame with his arms folded.

"Hasn't happened yet," Ella said, uncrossing and crossing her legs as she smiled demurely at Boots. She leaned forward just a little, her eyes widening. "Please tell me you have something for me to do," she pleaded, without sounding desperate, of course.

"Nope, sorry." He said, entering her room and plopping down in an arm chair. "Don't get your knickers in a twist though, I'm sure she'll give you something to do soon."

"Hard to get my knickers in a knot if I'm not wearing any," Ella murmured, a small flicker of a smirk crossing her mouth. Now she was just messing with Boots out of boredom. "So what have you been up to?" she asked perkily, not giving him the chance to respond to her previous statement.

"Oh this and that. Just got back from setting up a hit with Wolfe." He said with a yawn.  It was common knowledge to the inner circle of the Patin Society that the Godmother used Augustine Wolfe to do some of her dirty work, so Boots wasn't worried about sharing this information with her. "Oooh. And I've got a bit of gossip that you might find amusing.  Seems ol' Wolfy has himself a stalker."

Ella perked up, definitely interested. "Oh, how cute. Guy or girl, hot or not, good stalking or bad stalking?"

"Girl. According to Wolfe she's pretty hot. Unfortunately she wants to blow his brains out, and not the good kind of blowing if you get my drift." He said with a smirk. "Apparently Wolfe's been playing with her, leading her along and such. But the fact that she's stayed alive this long is impressive, and I'm interested to see whether Wolfe is just 'playing' or if he's completely underestimating her abilities."

"Hot girl following him around while trying to kill him," Ella mused. "I see how it could be either way... Although Wolfe doesn't seem like the type to string people along if he can help it. Does the lucky woman have a name?"

Boots yawned and stretched his legs out so that they were hanging over the arm of the chair, "Wolfe didn't let anything drop, but word on the street is that she goes by the name Red. Of course it's not her real name but I'm sure we'll find it out sooner or later. From what little information I've been able to dig up I hear she's a bit of a loose canon, sort of on the feral side. It's all very mysterious and highly amusing."

"Redheads are hot," Ella noted. "Hopefully the name isn't ironic. And feral chicks are good in bed." Ella bit her lip thoughtfully. "Even if she wants to kill him, their meeting could be interesting. Wish I could be there." Ella suddenly flopped back on her bed with a loud sigh. "I have no idea why, but I'm suddenly restless," she grumbled. "Hey, hear any dirty rumors about me?" She always liked hearing those.

Boots laughed, "Maybe. Although with you they're usually not rumors, I believe exaggerated facts would be the correct term." He said with a wink. He was just about to say something else when a strange bell like ringing sounded through the room. It was coming from a small gold gilded hand mirror that sat on Ella's dresser. The mirror was a magical communication device that all the inner circle of the Patin society had. Smirking, Boots reached over and picked it up, "Well, looks like your boredom is about to end." He said tossing it to her.

Meanwhile, up in her room, Susan and turned her chair so it was facing the magic mirror behind her desk. She sighed and impatiently drummed her fingers on the armrest of the chair as she wanted for Ella to answer.

"Don't touch my things," Ella said to Boots, not really meaning it. She flipped her hair so it landed perfectly in place and activated her side of the mirror. "Ella here," she said as the Godmother's face popped into view.

"Hello my dear. Would you please come up to my office. I have something I'd like to discuss." She said cooly. "Oh, and since Boots is there, please bring him with you. This will involve him too."

Boots perked up at the mention on his name and glanced over at Ella with an intrigued look.

"Sure thing, lovely," Ella said into the mirror, smiling slightly, then deactivated it, dropped the smile, and gave Boots a confused look. "I'm guessing you heard that." She stood and looked down, determining her clothes were good enough. They weren't her top-notch flattering clothes but if she was needed on a job she could change later. She smoothed her skirt slightly and opened the door. "After you," Ella said to Boots.

"This should be interesting." He said heading out and waiting for her as she closed the door. They began to walk down the hall and up the stairs towards her office. "You know, as much as I respect the lady, sometimes I think it's bloody creepy how she knows where we are all the time." He sighed and then smiled cheekily as he ran a hand through his hair. "I guess that's what comes from selling your soul."

"Mine's just on loan," Ella murmured, half-listening. She was only wondering a little if that were true. She knocked the door lightly as they reached the Godmother's office.

Boots glanced at her with a slight look of pity, "You just keep telling yourself that, Babe." He said with a sigh.

On the other side of the door the Godmother sat behind her desk, a newspaper and files spread out before her. "Come." She called when she heard the knock.

Ella put on a dazzling smile and entered into the office, walking up to and standing behind the chair seated in front of the Godmother. "How can I help you?" she asked.

"Both of you take a seat." When they had she looked up at them, folding her hands on her desk. "Have either of you seem the newspaper today?"

"Not yet," Ella answered honestly, crossing her legs and leaning back as she looked at the Godmother curiously.

Boots nodded that he hand. He usually tried to keep up with the news since he was often times sent out to spy on people that were it's main focus.

Susan picked up the paper and handed it to Ella. On the front page was a man standing at a podium speaking with the press. He was a very tall with wide shoulders, shaggyish hair, and glasses. The headline read, "JUDGE TIER TO RUN AGAINST MAYOR DUMPTY IN UPCOMING ELECTIONS."

She waited for a moment and then spoke, "As you will notice, he is be running against our candidate. He's well liked and this might pose a problem." Leaning back in her chair she assessed both of her minions for a moment. "There will be a party in two days for the candidates at the Silver Flute. It is also Judge Tier's wife's birthday, so they will undoubtedly have friends and family with them. I want you both to go."

"Scandal?" Ella asked. It was the only thing that came to mind as to why the Godmother would want her to go.

"No. I don't know either of them well enough for that. I want to both there for spying. See what you can find out, talk to his family and such. Mayor Dumpty will be there and you will be his escort. It's been arranged." She said to Ella and then turned to Boots. "I've called Piper, and everything has been set up."

Boots nodded, he had worked The Silver Flute before, in disguise as a waiter so that he could mingle and catch pick up information.

"Now. We need to get you a new dress Ella dear. Not that you don't look lovely most of the time, but I need you to be stunning so that people will over look the fact they you might be asking some strange questions." Getting up she lifted her wand and flicked it effortlessly. A rack of beautiful dresses appeared out of thin air and The Godmother gestured for Ella to get up and have a look.

Ella smiled, still enough of a small girl on the inside to enjoy picking out a new dress. Even if she questioned the use of the words 'most of the time.' Spying was not usually her forte, but she was willing to try new things. Especially if it got her... "Oooh, pure silk," she breathed, fingering the hem of one dress. After looking for a minute, she picked out a rich, dark brown dress with a gold and white trim, complimenting her skin and hair. It showed enough skin to be interesting, but cover what was important, especially at a formal party. She was already accessorizing in her mind. "What do you two think?" she asked, holding it up.

The godmother was leaning against the desk, with her arms folded across her chest and her head tilted to the side. "That should work." She said with a nod.

Boots shrugged and then gave a thumbs up. "Looks pretty low cut. Ol' Dumpty Doodle will probably come in his pants the minute he sees you. He nearly does every time he sees you in normal clothes as it is." He chuckled, flashing her a cheeky grin.

Ella sighed, laughing a little herself, although her laugh was exasperated. "Yeah, don't I know it," she said, rolling her eyes. "Dumpty's not going to be putting his hands all over me again, will he? I mean, 'escort' is just my cover this time... right?"

"Yes. You may have to spend a little time with him, but having you mingle and find out information is the more important thing." Susan went behind her desk and opened a drawer. Pulling out two small velvet boxes, she came back around the desk and handed one to each of her minions. In the box she handed to Ella was a beautiful gold and ruby necklace. In the one she handed to Boots was a small silver flute shaped pin.

"These have a direct feed back to my Mirror. By simply brushing them with your fingertips and whispering "begin" it will activate and I will be able to see and hear what you do. To stop transmission simply say "end". And don't have them activated all the time. I have no desire to witness the simpering attentions that Dumpty will undoubtedly lavish upon you, Ella."

Boots looked at his pin and then slid it into his vest pocket. He'd worn similar devices before so this was nothing new to him.

Ella smiled at the Godmother, holding the dress in one hand and the necklace in the other, both happily. "Thank you," she said. "Anything more?"

"No, that will be all. Two days from now I want you both here in my office dressed and ready by 7:30. The party starts at 8 and Dumpty's carriage will be here to get you at a quarter to." She said going back to sit behind her desk. "You may go."

Boots got out of his chair and waited for Ella to join him at the door and then they slipped out into the hall.

Although happy about the dress and the beautiful necklace, Ella was still a little upset. She didn't have anything to do yet that day. She told Boots this on the way back to her room, then added, "Any suggestions?"

Boots had been surprisingly subdued on their way back to the hall that held both their rooms, and when she spoke to him it to a moment for him to refocus.  Clearly something was on his mind. "Hmmm? Oh, something to do? Well, I off for a walk. Need to clear my head and run a couple of errands. You're welcome to come if you like."

"Please and thank you," Ella said, turning to her room. "I need to change if we're going out. Wait for me?" Without waiting for a reply, she darted inside, shutting the door behind her.

Boots chuckled softly and leaned against the wall, his hands in his pockets as he waited for her.

Myrtle was walking briskly down the corridor when she noticed Boots stanting there. It had been a while since she saw him last, they'd both been involved in an investigation of sabotage in the dust application files some weeks ago, and she slowed down to greet him. "Why, Mr. Boots! What a pleasant surprise," she said, giving him one of her kind, grandmotherly smiles, the ones that made her entire face crinkle. "How are you doing, my dear boy?"

Boots turned and plastered a charming feline smile on his face. "I'm doing just fine Myrtle, how have you been?" He said pleasantly enough, although truth be told Myrtle creeped him out slightly. Boots was in the business of knowing things and he knew that the grandmotherly act was used to cover interesting secrets.

"Oh, you know, the same as usual," Myrtle said, chatting pleasantly. "The humidity is wrecking havoc on my joints, but other than that, I can't complain." She looked at the door outside which he was waiting and did some quick thinking. "Waiting for that lovely Ella girl?"

"Yeah. I have to run a few errands this evening and she wanted to come along." He said his green eyes impassive, giving nothing away.

"Oh, how lovely," Myrtle said, patting his arm. "It's so nice to see all you young people out and about."

"Umm yeah." He said not really sure of what to say, but still maintaining a smile. "Hey Ella, babe. You almost ready?" he called though the door.

"Just a minute!" her muffled voice called through the door. A few seconds later, she emerged, wearing what she called her 'street clothes.' They didn't fail to flatter her, but not in the way of seduction. She wasn't even showing that much cleavage. Ella paused as she saw Myrtle, smiling at her. She wasn't more naive than Boots and sort of liked the old woman, but she could sense the tension in the air. "All ready to go," she said to Boots.

"Great. Myrtle. It's been a pleasure, as always. Enjoy the rest of your evening." He said smiling at the woman and then turning to walk down the hall.

Ella hurried down after him, waving goodbye at the woman before turning back to him. "So, where to first?" she asked, just happy to be outside.

"Well, I need to go to the West End. Have to pick something up at a plant shop and stop in at the tailors. I ripped my favorite vest the other day when I was out on a job so I need to pick up a new one." He said as they headed down the steps and onto the sidewalk. "Is there anywhere you'd like to go?"

"I don't need anything right now," Ella said. "If I think of something, I'll let you know." She stretched, more out of restlessness-even though she was on the move now, it still felt like she needed to do something.

Boots haled a taxi and soon they were rumbling through the streets toward the West End. He was strangely quiet. Still brooding over the job that both of them would be doing in the next two days.

"So, uh... what's up between you and Myrtle?" Ella quietly asked.

"She gives me the creeps, so to speak. I'm no moral fellow, believe me, but that woman is just.... She's seems nice on the outside but she uses it as a cover to hide her twisted, greedy, nature." He shivered slightly, "She loves beautiful young things, sort of has a fetish for them. It's weird."

Ella leaned her chin on her hand. "We all have secrets," she murmured, looking out the window of the taxi and vaguely wondering which plant shop they were going to. However, that was nice to know. Ella didn't want to flatter herself, but she oftentimes fell in that category, and while she was used to being on the receiving end of people's fetishes, she at least liked to know about it.

"Some more then others." He said softly. The carriage continued to rumble along and soon they found themselves driving down a street on the west side. MOVE TO THE WEST SIDE PAGE.
